  1. From the Chron article:

Plans for the first phase of Wood Trace call for 580 acres of residential development on the west side of Texas 249 and an 18-hole golf course on the east side of the freeway. The golf course will open in 1992. Construction on road and utilities will begin in 1991.

If you view the aerial photo you can make out interconnected clearings that are consistent with the layout of the golf course.

Additionally…zoom in to the section where 249 turns west to 149, and Google has mapped a section of the planned Aggie Toll Expressway.

  2. Hunt Global Resources Inc., headquartered in The Woodlands, has announced plans to develop a frac-sand mining facility driven by green technology on a 350-acre tract in Montgomery County. The site, located in the 14000 block of Old Conroe Road, is estimated to hold 21 million tons of marketable frac-sand, said George Sharp, CEO of Hunt Global Resources Inc.

Operations are scheduled to commence around the third quarter of 2012

The mining site is very close to Carriage Hills, and Old Conroe Road has expensive subdivisions that the sand trucks will pass by. I'm waiting for the NIMBY force to protest the location.

  3. Yes the area is also named Egypt along with the other Egypt in Wharton county. Egypt could have been a better way to identify the area instead of Magnolia East or Woodlands West.

I misassumed that the humor statement was over yet another report that Research Forest would be extended.

  4. From Don Norrell of The Woodlands Township:

Miles McKinney attended a regular Board meeting of the Westwood Magnolia Parkway Improvement District last evening. The purpose of attending this meeting was to gather additional information regarding a proposed 2-lane extension of Research Forest Drive from the existing intersection of Research Forest and Bear Branch Drive, in the Village of Alden Bridge, to Egypt Lane on the northwest side of the Township.

Planning and funding for extension of Research Forest Drive is under the direction of the Westwood Magnolia Parkway Improvement District. Funding will be accomplished thru sales tax collections levied on sales within the district. The district encompasses land containing commercial activity around and near the intersection of FM 2978 and Egypt Lane outside of The Woodlands Township. This Improvement District is funded through sales tax collections and these funds are proposed to be used to fund debt service requirements for bonds that will be issued for the roadway project. The roadway construction plan must be approved by Montgomery County before construction can begin.

Right-of-way necessary for the project was acquired by Montgomery County in 2010. County approval to move forward on construction of the roadway is projected by early November, with construction beginning in January 2012. The roadway extension is projected to be complete by mid-2012.

  5. Don’t know exactly where to post this but here seems the most fitting (i.e. least incorrect).

We live in East Magnolia and have not taken the effort to discover Houston. Recently we toured Bayou Bend and took a short drive past the nearby mansions in River Oaks. Very interesting trip.

We plan to make similar day trips into the big city and tour other architecture. Can anyone recommend interesting sites that offer tours, or at least are easily viewable from the sidewalk? The style is less important than the significance.

  6. Sales tax funds Research Forest Drive expansion

Article reports the Research Forest expansion is estimated to be completed by 1st quarter 2012. Considering they have yet to break ground this date is questionable.

    Also interesting that they reported:

A total of 21 registered voters within WMPID’s boundaries voted on the tax increase last year. It passed by one vote. Once the tax increase was approved in the election, WMPID’s six elected board of directors voted unanimously to pass the measure.”

Even half of the members of the improvement district thought it was a bad idea.

  7. Something is not passing the sniff test here. Is a new sales tax being ramrodded behind closed doors?

Updated: 10.23.10 In the first two days of early voting, several residents believe they were wrongly turned away from casting a ballot on a proposed 2-cent sales tax that could be levied on businesses inside the Westwood Magnolia Parkway Improvement District.

Westwood resident Richard Straka said when he went to the polls, he was told he was not eligible.

“I was going to vote against it,” he said.

He said he was told he was ineligible to vote because he did not own a business in the improvement district and neither he nor his spouse was on the district’s board of directors.

  8. I wouldn't completely rule out an HQ move, though it is unlikely. A new shiny corporate campus, with an entire master-planned community (and VERY nice one at that) built right behind it? That may entice a move from Irving, where there are hardly any Exxon employees compared to Houston.

Yes but the Irving employees are mostly top management, and the rank & file here would be very uncomfortable with them looking over their shoulders. Lots of political implications.

  9. ExxonMobil should make a formal announcement early next year on their plans for the campus. At this time they have not finalized exactly what branches will close and move to the Spring location. Likely they will not move the present Dallas and Houston offices

  10. For the far-NW Alden Bridge residents it gives them better access to the world than going east to Greenbridge or south to Woodlands Parkway. Other than that its just a road extension.

The Kuykendahl-FM1488 intersection will be just west of 242-FM1488 intersection by about ¼ mile. I certainly hope they synchronize the two sets of traffic lights.

Welcome to east Magnolia. It offers more space yet easy access to the amenities of The Woodlands without paying their inflated home prices. Let me know if you need any details on the area.

  11. This has not got off the ground, right?

A few months ago I took a ride down Matthews Lane and was curious about the extensive gate and brick fencing on the north side. Click for a Google Street View

I talked to a local resident about the property and he reported it was previously owned by an eccentric millionaire who passed before he could build his mansion. The property was then purchased by The Woodlands and they are currently leasing it as pasture land until they have a need to develop it.
