  1. not enough. its just a cruddy cell phone camera - i don't really know what it has - certainly not over 1. I am not a camera afficianado (maybe someone else could assist with information ) but these days you pretty much see 3 as a bare minimum and probably 5 is standard. there has been a couple of dig. camera threads on the board recently. you might search them out.

I see that Yakuza Ice posted a good aerial photo of it, and Gnu posted a clear photo of a house in that location.

  2. A little off subject, but has anyone ever got to meet Adam West? We kids would have probably passed out if we ever saw him in person back then. That is all we used to talk about when the TV show was at its height of popularity.

I still remember each of us would play the different characters from the show. One day you could be Robin, The Joker, Egghead, Mr Freeze, The Riddler and the girls would be Catwoman, Batgirl, etc. Someone would shout go and everyone would start kicking and punching and rolling on the ground. We would toss nets (blankets) on the criminals pretending to capture them.

Can imagine what the neighbors thought?

    ZOP! BAM! SOCK!

My dad liked Frank Gorshin's (the Riddler) laugh. Cesar Romero's (the Joker) was also funny. Their subordinates always dressed in various uniforms. When Egghead (played by Vincent Price) would agree with something, he would say "Egg-cellent."

  3. in my book that is considered gross and disgusting too.

If you reach under your seat and touch a piece of chewing gum, you can feel the sticky sugar content. Then you have to go wash your hands. If you run your hand across a completely dried-up booger, most of the time it will simply fall down and you won't feel anything on your hands.

  4. Back around the height of the popularity of the hit TV series Batman circa 1966 you could dial a number (on your rotary phone) listen for a while, then all of a sudden you would hear the Batmobile burning rubber and tires squealing. The turbo sound would roar for a while then take off. I remember we kids would all crowd around the receiver because it was such a mystery and we couldnt beleive it! Must have been some kind of promotional campaign or something? I still get a bit gitty thinking about it!

    VRRRRROOOOOOOOOMMMMMMM!!!!!!

I watched Batman when I was a kid back in the 1960s. My dad would say: "They must be dumb. Everything in the Batcave and the Batmobile is labeled."

  5. Anybody remember the Pig Stand restaurants? I remember one over near White Oak Bayou...I think on White Oak Drive...

God, I was little back then...lol

Yes, there were at least three (maybe four) Pig Stand Restaurants in Beaumont. I read that the whole chain is having financial problems and all of the branches might become things of the past. I remember the famous "Pig Sandwich."

  6. Wondering if anyone has been to Pat and Pete's Blues Burgers.. not there.. was in the Market Square area.. a door or two down from Warren's.. not bad burgers.. a girlfriend of mine used to work there.. I liked it that they had this little courtyard area. Somehow I managed to get a buy 1 get 1 free coupon or something like that foir Pat and Pete's. We came on a Sunday and ate in the little courtyard area. It was nice. Owners Pat and Pete Selin (Pete died fairly recently..), owners of Chelsea's 804 (pretty sure), Club Hey Hey and Bonton Room.. wasn't this, like, their last venture in Houston?

Was it a place that made those big, gourmet hamburgers like Fuddrucker's? I love to pig out on those kind of burgers. Why was it called "Blues" Burgers? Did it play blues music? Or did they put blue cheese salad dressing on the burgers? I tried a Blue Cheese burger once. It tasted terrible! I scraped off the blue cheese dressing with a knife, and I could still taste it!

  7. i remembered somewhere that senators rarely become president. david broder in a 2002 column explains why. if applying these parameters to our current election, it narrows the field quite a bit.

    Why Few Senators Become Presidents

    By David S. Broder

    Sunday, June 23, 2002; Page B07

Once again the Senate is full of presidential wannabes. Three Democrats, John Edwards of North Carolina, John Kerry of Massachusetts and Joe Lieberman of Connecticut, are out most weekends, cultivating friends in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina and wooing contributors everywhere. Joseph Biden of Delaware and Christopher Dodd of Connecticut reportedly are weighing the possibility of joining the chase. And the boss man, Majority Leader Tom Daschle of South Dakota, has carefully left the door open for himself.

In all of American history, only two men -- Warren Harding and John Kennedy -- have gone straight from the Senate to the White House. Bob Dole in 1996 was the last sitting senator to win a party nomination (though he resigned his Senate seat a few months before the convention) and, like most of his predecessors, he was whomped in the election.

In 2000, two men who had spent most or all of their public careers as senators, Al Gore and Bill Bradley, and a sitting senator, John McCain, were in the race -- and all three lost.

The statistics show that vice presidents (many of them, like Gore, former senators) and governors and former governors (such as George W. Bush and Jimmy Carter) have far greater success in winning nominations and in making it to the White House than do senators.

Yes, only two U.S. Senators were elected President in the 1900s: Warren G. Harding of Ohio and John F. Kennedy of Massachusettes.

  8. Better make it a big boat. I got others we need to put on it.

During the Communist scare of the 1950s, I don't think that most people really knew what a Communist actually was. Back then Communists were called "pinko." Why?

  9. I am so glad you placed this news here. We only discussed baseball parks and teams from our areas past, but no mention of football! Other than from the local schools.

We need more positive news of local youth success.

Thanks for sharing and come back!

    :):):)

There's something I've always wondered about kid's sports. When kids are between 8-13, their Little League Baseball is real popular, but when they play it in high school, it no longer is. When they are between 8-13, football isn't popular, but when they play it in high school, it's real popular. Why is that?

  10. Does anyone remember Old Mexico Restaurant. I remember going there and they had HUGE plates of food, like the inside of that ZZ Top album. It had a tower and I remember that it had a fire in 70s. Firemen were said to have found espionoge stuff and the wall full of money. My dad said the owner was a spy or something. Great Food though!

Well, not too many people would expect a Mexican restaurant to have spy stuff.

  11. Why do alot of drivers here don't wave to thank other motorists yielding for them ? Houstonians keep bragging about how friendly and courteous they are, but they sure don't act like it. Oh...stop throwing things out of the car while driving when there are other cars behind you in the streets or highways. I don't care if it is a cigarette(use your ashtray),plastic cups, etc. or whatever, show some respect!!!

Yes, I'm also Rodney Dangerfield when I'm out on the road.

  12. that roofles my toofle.

When I would go to an indoor theatre, my biggest pet peeve was people talking too loud where I couldn't hear the movie. My second biggest pet peeve was whenever I would pick my nose, then would reach under the seat to wipe the booger, and my finger feeling a piece of sticky old chewing gum that someone had stuck there on purpose. That was gross and disgusting!

  13. So if you want UHF channels, you'll have to get one of those round antennas?

I looked on DTVanswers.com so that I could learn what to expect when digital takes over on 2/17/2009. At least the Federal Government will do something good for those who don't have cable/dish. People can get up to two $40 coupons to use towards the purchase of one or two of those digital converter boxes. I might have to use one or two of those coupons.

  14. A few more Rice atheletes that went pro throughout the years:

    Jose Cruz Jr. (baseball)

Dicky Moegle (football...played for the 49ers and Cowboys)

    Tobin Rote (football)

    Bill Howton (football)

    Buddy Dial (football)

    Hugo Hollas (football Saints)

    Ricky Pierce (NBA Bucks)

...several baseball players from Rice's nat'l championship baseball team of a couple of years ago were drafted and are in the minor league's now. Look for several to be in the majors real soon...

I haven't kept up with college football this season. How is Rice doing?

  15. As bizarre as it seems, this crazy thing used to be seen around our city quite often. Does anyone know when about it 1st started passing through Houston? I personally remember seeing it about the late 1960's as a kid. The second you saw it man it was like New Year's to us! Not sure how mom managed to keep driving as we were just going bonkers and started breaking out in the theme song.

written in 1963 by Richard D. Trentlage:

Oh, I wish I were an Oscar Mayer wiener

That is what I truly want to be

'Cause if I were an Oscar Mayer wiener

Everyone would be in love with me.

Oscar Mayer is also famous for their Wienermobile, which has toured the United States for over 70 years. The first Wienermobile was created in 1936.

    Oscar-Meyer-Wienermobile.jpg

Every Saturday morning on the History Channel is a series called "America Eats." Day before yesterday the episode was all about the history of hot dogs. It explained the history of the German immigrant named Oscar Mayer and all about the Wienermobile. This coming Saturday the episode will be all about the history of Snack Foods.

  16. ehh, more like tensions with Turkey and the reducing strength of the US dollar against the euro, and a recent 3 week low against the yen. actually, OPEC has recently annouced they may increase production to keep oil prices as is, or lower. also, oil prices have risen because of the booming economies of China and India. getting back on topic, if oil prices are a concern (and they will hit $4 plus next spring/summer) then dump the SUV/less fuel effecient car (easier said then done, i took a small hit on that one but now drive a nice little mazda3), although they are attractive because the prices of these vehicles has been slashed dramitically because Ford/Chevy/Dodge, etc are trying to make room for new SAV's and/or more so called "fuel effecient cars/trucks"; and yes, spring/summer is a great time for a country drive (or bike/walk/horse) if prices are too high :P

And when it does hit $100 a barrel, people will be screaming for a pay raise or threaten to go on strike. Instead, why don't they make a few cuts? Why not stop going out to eat? Eat at home. Why not stop going out to the movies? Wait until that movie comes out at Blockbuster. Why not go to Wal-Mart/Target instead of Macy's/Neiman Marcus?

I just realized, Neiman Marcus stores are in Dallas. But are there any of them in Houston?

  17. Sure wish someone had pics of The Winkler Drive-In, but up close. All we saw was the far away aerial, which is better than nothing I guess. If only we knew what year it actually closed. Only a local kicking around at the time could divulge? I would assume judging by the design of the now gone Bill McDavid Oldsmobile Sales local next door could we determine? Remember it had that very tall slender neon sign on the edge of 45 with an arrow flickering to the top and the state of Texas would light up? The place appeared to have that early 60's modern Jetson's design. So maybe the theater was torn down around 1960? Hello out there Houstonians! Help!

I'm with you. I've been hoping for about two or three years that I could find someone with a photo of the Winkler Drive-In Theatre. No, it wasn't torn down around 1960 because we went there from 1962-64. I thought someone on another topic/thread said that he was driving down Winkler drive recently and he saw that there still stood an old rusty sign with an arrow pointing saying "Winkler Drive-In Theatre."

If you or anyone else is driving down that way in the near future, maybe you could look for it. If it is still there, maybe you can take a photo of it and post it where we all can see it.

On page B9 in today's Houston Chronicle is a cartoon of Cheney hammering an Iran war drum, raising gas prices, and Bush is cheering him on.

  19. I think light rail to IAH is a bad idea because the trip is so long. A regular subway line or even commuter rail is better -- maybe at some point in the future...

I'm looking at the new issue (November 2007) of Texas Monthly magazine. On page 78 there's an article about the Houston Metrorail. $2 for a 24-hour-day pass sounds excellent to me. There's only 3 hours and 45 minutes that it doesn't run. If I lived in Houston, I think that I might try to adjust my lifestyle and adapt to that so that I could try to do without a vehicle.

Some people say that they need a vehicle to carry all of their groceries. Why not, say, buy a couple of bags full one day, then the next day stop and get a couple more. You don't ten bags of groceries to make it through a day or two.

  20. If the news would stfu about future prices, maybe we'd be ok.

Every time an analyst opens their mouth, an Angel dies.

I also heard on the news that one reason why oil prices are going up is because of Bushiepoo's talk about attacking Iran.
