  1. I thought this area was Eastwood until someone told me otherwise. The streets look the same and the houses look the same. Can anyone tell me any other information about this neighborhood? Is the area relatively safe?

Is Woodleigh near Rockleigh, a street that I lived up the road from?

  2. Pack a hazmat suit if going near. Just kidding...asbestos comments from above.

It really needs to be razed and started over.

AARP classifies Westin and St. Regis Hotels as "upscale." They'll give discounts to members. But if I stayed at the St. Regis, I would "save" about only $40-$50 because a room for one night is close to $400.

  3. The only Howard Johnson's Inn & Restaurant over here is in Beaumont. But it doesn't have the orange roof that Howard Johnson's was famous for. I read that the orange roofs are virtually extinct. Did any survive over there in Houston?

I turned 50 last week and I joined AARP. Howard Johnson's is one of the hotels that will give me a 10-15% discount.

  4. not too long ago, kipperman's pawn shop on bellfort was taken over by "Mr. Money" pawn shop. does anyone know about this change of hands or why it happened?

had anyone ever been to kipperman's?

    it was quite a trip...

On page A7 in today's Houston Chronicle there's an article entitled "Unholy hustle for matrimony." It tells about Las Vegas, Nevada calling itself "the Wedding Capital of the World"...[with] more that 60 chapels..."

Handbillers seek out couples to get married in their chapel, each working in 12-hour shifts. "Accusations have flown: slashed tires, death threats, homeless men paid to hassle competitors."

  5. I don't think so the old maps of Pasadena i've seen list it as "N. Richey Rd"(or shaver i can't remember)

The way I understand it, the Washburn Tunnel goes under a ship channel. Isn't the north side of it called Federal Road and the south side of it in Pasadena called Richey?

  6. I'd like to go down there. I thought you were talking about car tunnels. Have any of you walked down there?

Texhwyman.com said that there are no tunnels that are part of the state highway system. It said the current tunnels in Texas are the Addison Airport Tunnel in Addison, one in Big Bend National Park, and the Washburn Tunnel.

I heard that Federal Road goes to and through the Washburn Tunnel. Is it also part of the state highway system with a numbered road?

  7. As bizarre as it seems, this crazy thing used to be seen around our city quite often. Does anyone know when about it 1st started passing through Houston? I personally remember seeing it about the late 1960's as a kid. The second you saw it man it was like New Year's to us! Not sure how mom managed to keep driving as we were just going bonkers and started breaking out in the theme song.

written in 1963 by Richard D. Trentlage:

Oh, I wish I were an Oscar Mayer wiener

That is what I truly want to be

'Cause if I were an Oscar Mayer wiener

Everyone would be in love with me.

Oscar Mayer is also famous for their Wienermobile, which has toured the United States for over 70 years. The first Wienermobile was created in 1936.

There's a series on the History Channel called "America Eats." One episode was about the history of the hot dog. It told about the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile. I don't know if it still comes around or not. I remember going to see it when I was a kid.

  8. I haven't bought a newspaper in over 10 years.

Where they sell ad space, and promise our eyeballs to advertisers.

Newspaper sales don't amount to diddly anymore. Advertising is where the money comes from (just like the HAIF).

Yes, newspapers make most of their money from advertising. I don't think the Chronicle would stay in business very long if all they received was the 50 cents that a newspaper costs.

Years ago, to my surprise, I found out that fast food restaurants make their biggest profits from the sale of drinks, not food.

  9. that wouldn't be allowed, that could put Ed in some legal trouble. We're already cutting it close to posting portions of the Chron.com articles on here.

I didn't know the legal implications involved. On another thread, someone posted an item that I mentioned out of the Guiness Book of World Records about the Astroworld Hotel. That's why I thought that it might be OK.

  10. Milby Mansion was along Milby Park. Back in the 60's one could score some good acid at the place. Good rock concerts at the park at that time. I think I remember that.

On page B1 in today's Chronicle, there a photo of a jogger in Reveille Park. It says that a trail is being built which will extend from Milby Park to Scottcrest Park. On page B2 is a map showing where the hike-and-bike trail will be. The article says that the Houston Parks Board paid $950,000 for 27.2 acres on Sims Bayou for the site. The article begins with: "It'll be the center park of a 14-mile chain of seven."

Does that means that the trail will be 14 miles long? If so, it would take about a full day to hike its length, a few hours to ride a bike from one end to the other. It looks interesting.

  11. Well let's be fair here. The Phaeton was also a flop in Europe.

I don't think the problem was just that it was a luxury Volkswagen. Potential buyers were also put off by the reputation of Volkswagen dealers, which is dubious at best.

Simple, a Corvette. I'm turning 50 next week. Maybe I'm going through a mid-life crisis.

  12. This book is excellent. I had the pleasure of meeting the author, David Welling, at his book signing back on Dec. 20th at Story Sloane's gallery. I highly recommend checking out a copy of this book, if you can get your hands on it, and I'm sure that some local places carry it - including, possibly, Story Sloane's gallery.

Can you scan and post things from it for us to see?

  13. "Here's Cal Worthington.................and his dog SPOT!"

I also like the old 7up and Dr. Pepper commercials.

On Saturday Night Live I remember Mr. Bill and his dog Spot.

Yeah! That Mrs Butterworth used to scared the crap out of us too! We wanted to smash aginst the wall.

Almost as freaky as the Chuck Wagon always trying to escape the pup. I always wanted to see the UNCUT version where he catches it and mauls it to death into bits and pieces!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9BBqgMQluDM

    OK your all my witnesses!

You have to see this, although not a commercial, you be the judge. I am traumatized.

Traumatized over what? It looked like a woman singing to and about a bunch of men.

  14. I went to Barnes and Nobiles yesterday and found a book called Cinema Houston! It has info on ALL houston Cinema's/Movie Houses EVEN Ashikaga's Santa Rosa, winkler drive in! It's a great book it was $50 though i found a few sites that have it. Most pictures and info is cited as "houston public library"

    http://www.bestwebbuys.com/Cinema_Houston-...l?isrc=b-search

Excellent find. I'll ask the librarian here if she'll order it. I would think that a lot of you on the forum will want to buy it.

  15. Probably already mentioned here were that all walk in Theaters had a "Cry Room" in th back. We always asked mom why the tiny room back there had about 3-4 rows of seating and a glass wall in front. Too cool!

(if you could tolerate the loud crying)

Just my belief, out of common courtesy, I've always believed that people with infants shouldn't take them to an indoor movie. That's as inconsiderate as sticking a piece of chewing gum underneath the seat.

  16. Looks like it's going to be a rough week for the markets. Get ready and have your seasick pills ready.

I saw a cartoon in Hustler Humor magazine which showed a man and a woman going into his apartment. In the room were whipping posts, chains, locking stocks, beds of nails, etc. The woman said to the man: "This isn't what I was expecting when you said that you were going to take me to your place and show me your stocks and bonds!"

  17. I always wanted to start this topic but I assumed there were already some out here?

There are so many that even today I think of the jingles of the product. I'll list a few jingles then the ad's will come to mind.

Sorry Charlie, Only good tasting tuna get to be Starkist!

No thing goes better than Blue Bonnet on it!

Hey! Let go o my Eggo!

(Madge) Your washing your hands in it. (Palmoliove)

Dippity - Do gree/blue hair gel (remember the scent and was sqishy and gooey? Big in the 60's.

The commercial when the dud slaps on his aftershave and beautiful girls kick in the door and start chopping up his pad? Hai Karate aftershave!

The quicker picker upper! (Bounty towels ) with Nancy Walker (Rhoda's mom)

Momma mia thats a Spicy Meatball! was it Prego?

Nice place for a sticker upper! Glade air fresheners

Was it Tide? when the White Knight comes charging in out of nowhere and freaks out the lady hanging her clothes on the line? I liked that one.

I would walk a mile for a Marlboro then always showed cowboy with black eye? or was it another brand?

Cause I'm a woman ...w.o.m.a.n. I'll say it again (was it Virginia Slims?)

Here is my all time fav though Nancy Sinatra going MOD 60's for RC Cola! One day I perused youtube and got floored! She was so groovy and out-of-site! Funny how much these promos stick in your mind even for a 7 year old in 1967. Woah!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmCDXwTYakw

The White Knight was the AJAX commercial. A low voice would sing: "Stronger Than Dirt. Stronger Than Dirt." The knight would point his lance/spear at an article of dirty clothing and it would turn white.

You would "Walk a mile for a Camel." Taryton cigarettes would show a person with a black eye then the words: "Taryton smokers would rather fight than switch."

Yes, I remember Nancy Sinatra singing: "R.C.! The one with the mad, mad taste!"

I remember an ALKA-SELTZER commercial where a guy is sitting on the side of his bed saying: "I can't believe I ate the whole thing!"

As far as today's commercials, the only current one I like is the one for Yellow Book. It shows you the way.

  18. They were done in visual stereo like that to produce a 3-D effect when viewed through one of those old hand-held stereoscopic viewers.

It was precisely the same effect produced by one of those old Viewmasters we all got for Xmas when we were kids.

When I was a kid I had a toy called a View Master. This is what they look like they were made for. I think that View Masters are still made.

  19. Just keep paying everything on time. Time heals credit wounds. Additionally, FICO is changing their formula slightly later this year. They claim that borrowers with only a single ding but otherwise good credit history should get a better score. Those with a thin credit history should see their score drop. Assuming this is your only ding, you should improve your score.

Google 'New FICO rules' for numerous articles on the anticipated effects of the changes.

I've read not to fall for those "credit repair" schemes. They're just another scam to take your money. It has been said by credit counselors that "time is the only thing that will clear up a bad credit record."

  20. I like watching old TV commercials that I remember as a kid. You can see a lot of them on YouTube.com. I watch one I fondly remember: AQUA VELVA after shave lotion. "There's something about an AQUA VELVA man." There's also a lot of them on TVdays.com.

I'd like to see what everyone else's favorite old TV commercials were.

  21. We used to go there with our baby daughter in the 60's....it was a great place to go because we could watch a movie, while our baby slept in the back seat of the car.

You were lucky. Most babies would cry their heads off while at a drive-in movie theatre. On YouTube.com, there's some vintage drive-in theatre intermission commercials. One of them said that free bottle warmer service for babies was free at the concession stand.

Why can't most people simply get married at a place like this? Just make it legal. Over half of all marriages end in divorce. That's bad after spending a big amount of money on a big wedding.
