  1. My dad said that when he was a kid, his mother would buy his half-sister an already-baked cake at the grocery store. His half-sister would eat off all of the frosting and then she would throw the rest of the cake out into the back yard. Have any of you ever done that? Do all of you with a sweet tooth consume sugar in different ways?

  2. Hmmmm. A great a American who lied about keeping Rumsfeld on to the end of his term when he knew full well he was out the door. I'm glad he did dump Rumsfeld but what was his motivation for handling the firing so badly?

When Newt Gingrich criticized Bush for not dumping Rumsfeld about two weeks before the election, Bush said that he did not want to use someone for political gain. As much as I don't like and agree with Dubya, I have to commend him for that.

  3. Yes there is a sign as you approach the intersection that alerts you that the intersection is monitored by a red light camera. It's a white rectangular sign with a picture of a traffic light on it and it has words that alert drivers of the camera.

I wonder if anyone has bought and tried any of that stuff you spray on your license plates that makes the camera not able to read the letters and numbers on the plates?

  4. The glass-enclosed room overlooking the lobby on the second floor near the top of the escalators.

Sounds kind of like that double mirror restroom that you have pictures of under another topic. But at least you'd have privacy when you think everyone can see you. But what you're talking about there at the Hyatt Regency sounds like a nice place to have a drink.

  5. I'm posting these for the public interest, and maybe a little to show off :-) all rights reserved.

This is the fire escape of the highrise building in the 1000 block of Texas Ave, south side. I took it from 12th floor in the Chase Center garage with a long lens.

Excellent! I'd like to see more if you have any.

  6. Yes.

I had a training class in this hotel the other day. The atrium is nice, but it sure smells like a hotel.

Why do some hotels always smell like hotels?

Last month the Hyatt Regency advertised a New Year's Eve "package" that consisted of a room, meal in the restaurant, drinks in the bar, party hats, horns, etc. If I had lived in Houston I would have tried to buy one. It sounds like it might have been fun.

I haven't been inside hotels enough to discern whatever distinctive aroma they might have.

  7. I had every Master of the Universe and Transformer toy ever made. I wish i still had them. What did you enjoy as a child or do you still collect them?

G.I. Joe. When I was in the second grade I got one for Christmas. I took off his clothes and I said that he was walking down the street naked. My dad told me that a person would get arrested for doing that. I said: "REALLY???"

  8. I noticed that HGAC's 2025 plan shows an Airport Rd. running from Jones Dr. around Moody Gardens/the airport to Harborside Dr. at I-45, but doesn't show a timeline for the project. Is this road and bridge still planned or even funded? With 61st swamped and all the planned west end growth it would seem this road is a no-brainer, but a quick Google search didn't find anything.

HGAC also shows a new road proposed from the mainland to the island west of I-45, but that would have to be a high bridge and it would seem much harder to justify the cost for it.

Anyone know if either of these projects is actually likely to happen?

Wow! I didn't know that Galveston had an airport.

  9. If we didn't have freeways we would have developed more like European cities and New York and Chicago.

We wouldn't be as sprawled out, but that's a what if scenario that won't happen.

We have so deep of a love affair with our vehicles that we would regard in horror the thought of no freeways.

  10. Your within good company. Trust me!

There is only one above ground level mall to shop that has a very limited variety of expensive "touristy" stores is The Park Shops. There are also the numerous, winding underground boutiques but nothing like the old days. Foley's is now Macy's and miraculously still operates.Deverlopers and small business owners have been trying for years to bring it back somewhat the way it was but it could never be matched. Even though Main st was revitalized the homeless population is ever present and that alone is a whole other story. I worked off main st for years and can attest to the constant presence of the intimidating homeless people. I do have sympathy, but my coworkers and myself have been harrassed so often by them. Most dont ask for change they demand dollar bills. I can only say I am glad I dont work there anymore!

So, to answer the question I get nostalgic too but prefer to remember the way it was.

Yes, the Foleys that opened up over here in Parkdale Mall a couple of years ago is now Macy's. I can't keep up with all of these mergers. I'm not familiar with ANY remaining soda fountains with counters and stools in this whole area, and Beaumont's population is over 100,000. I think that there was at least one W.T. Grant in this area, but it folded MANY years ago.

  11. My mom worked at the Weingarten's deli in Deer Park for a short time when I was a kid. I don't really remember what the store looked like (I was four), but eventually it became a Gerland's, and now it's a Food Town. There was one in La Porte, too. It became a Safeway, then a short-lived Apple Tree. Now it's one of the last (or might be THE last) "Food Fair" stores that still has the Gerland's name on it.

Speaking of Able Drugs, there was one in Deer Park/La Porte infront of San Jacinto College, and another one in Pasadena on Spencer Hwy (between Burke & Strawberry). That one (the one in Pasadena), I remember also had a soda fountain well into either the late 1980's or early 1990's (I don't remember which). The one is Deer Park is a nail shop, while the one in Pasadena is now a Ci-Ci's Pizza.

Oh, and I know what you mean about Larry's Arts. That place gives me the creeps. They too used to have soda fountain. They made good milk shakes... not as good as Able.

I remember Weingarten's "store brand" products were "Food Club." Now, Wal-Mart has "Great Value", H.E.B. Pantry has "Hill County Fare", etc. They're probably all the same thing with their label on them.

  12. So happy that someone else recalls the Santa Rosa. When I was about 9-10 years old we used to go there to see the latest Godzilla/Monster Zero movies. One of the last ones I saw was "Destroy All Monsters" quite the rage for the day! Thats all we talked about for days. When I got a little older we got so desperate we rode the bus to get there. We lived over towards 45/Telephone but determined we were! It was so cool seeing those giant monsters up on that huge screen smashing all the cities around them. Man did it look real! Kids would be crying as they left because the movie & sound was so real. Last time I remember seeing a double feature! It was only about 50 cents per kid and we thought that was too much? Let me know if they will ever auction off or sell any thing left inside. I can only bet that it has bad rain damage, etc. One thing I know I wouldnt want is the seats not after its been a porno palace. Still would love to go inside one last time before the wrecking ball comes. It would be some cool just to go up to the projector room! I remember they used to have raffles between movies. Once they raffled a bike, the crowd went wild! Some lucky kid got it. That was when the Dr Pepper soft drinks still had the little clock on the side. They also had a "cry" for loud babies like most theaters at that time. Try to alert people if you hear anything! Thanks

I'm laughing at what you said about the seats. My cousin referred me to this site. He said that he went to that theatre a long time ago.

  13. The one in Dallas might be larger but they are both huge. Before the Hilton Americas opened up, I believe the Hyatt was the largest hotel in Houston with 977 rooms. That said, Dallas' is larger at around 1100 rooms. Although the pic you saw only had the entrance, it is a 30 floor hotel with an open atrium tht looks down on the lobby.

The picture I saw might have been on Hotels.Com instead of Orbitz.Com. The picture of the one in Dallas showed about four or five black-colored glass buildings which descended. They were next to what is called Reunion Tower. The picture was taken from a distance, but the one in Houston was taken of just the front entrance which made me think that it was smaller.

  14. I looked up the Hyatt Regency hotel on Orbitz.com. I saw the one in Houston and the one in Dallas. The picture of the one in Dallas looked huge, so I thought it was bigger than the one in Houston. But a co-worker of mine told me that both hotels are about the same size. She said that she stayed in both of them. The only picture of the one I saw in Houston just showed the front entrance. That's what made me think it was smaller than Big Ds. Have any of you ever stayed in one or both of those hotels?
