  1. Yes, both are still made, however, not in San Antonio and not by the original brewers. Both Lone Star and Pearl were sold to national brewers years ago and have changed hands multiple times since then. Both San Antonio breweries have been closed, the Pearl one just a few years ago.

Both brands are now owned by Pabst. However, Pabst doesn't brew Lone Star, they apparently farm it out to Miller, who brews it in Fort Worth under the name of Lone Star Brewing Company. But it's not a real company in the way it once was.

Lone Star hasn't been an independent brewery or brand since the mid 1970s, when Olympia bought them out. It was then sold to G. Heileman, a big Midwestern brewer. Then it was sold to Strohs (the former Schlitz) and the San Antonio brewery was closed and production moved to Stroh's plant in Longview. Then Pabst, (formerly Pearl. Pearl bought Pabst), purchased the brand and brought it back to San Antonio and started brewing it at the Pearl brewery. But now that the Pearl plant is closed, it's made in Fort Worth, as is Pearl.

I'm not sure why Pabst farms out its brewing. Talk about outsourcing!

You answered my question very well. It sounds like today's common business practice of merging/outsourcing/sub-contracting, etc.

  2. I posted a few photos of Houston's Busch Gardens, and some 1970's newspaper article excerpts about the park, here.

In answer to the question above - Wikipedia says that Houston is the only Texas city with an Anheuser-Busch brewery.

Thanks. Yes, I went to Busch Gardens back when it first opened. What stands out in my head is the huge goldfish, and the free cup of beer they gave my dad. I guess Texans want to drink but not make beer. I remember when Pearl and Lone Star were exclusively Texan. I don't hear or see much about either one anymore. Have they bit the dust?

  3. I'm 40 now. My grandma lived in West U near Kirby and Felix's. I grew up going to Felix's with Grandma. My family and relatives ate there with my grandma. My parents also took my brother and I to the Felix's on Bissonnet and Beachnut. I'm third generation and my 15 year old son is 4th G. He was eating Felix's guacamole before he cut teeth.

The chili con queso is the best in the entire world! And the cheese enchiladas are to die for. The original is still open; however the others are long gone.

I live in San Antonio now, but nothing compares to the food at Felix's. They have talked about closing it before. We cannot let this legend die. When I am in Houston, I have to stock up on queso.

There's more about Felix: he basically started the "Head Start" program that exists for youngsters now.

    Spark a memory?

I turned 50 last month. I wish we could go back to the "good ol' days" of Felix and Monterey House.

  4. Getting way, way off topic...

OK, back on topic. How is business at Gulfgate today? Is it now a place that's slowly but surely becoming a ghost town? I've read postings on this forum of people talking about a lot of its stores having closed down.

  5. Just wondered if anyone can recall either visiting one of these in their youth or even better, if they knew anyone that attended these schools decades ago?

Can you name the style of haircut you used to get back when? I recall a flat top as kid (dad was very military like).

It seemed like these schools were just about every where once. Seldom see here any more. Times are a changing.

    dressing1.jpg

Is this the place that had the sign on the window that said: "If you can grow it, we can cut it?"

  6. All televisions for sale in stores right now have to receive ATSC digital television. That's the law. If a store has some leftover old NTSC televisions they have to put big fat stickers on them letting people know they're going to be outdated in less than a year.

If you see a TV in the store now and it says "HDTV" on it, you will be fine. Unless you're buying from the sort of store that will rip you off. If you go to a Wal-Mart or Circuit City or Best Buy you'll be fine (in terms of having a TV that will work a year from now. They may rook you on the price, though).

One of the biggest scams going on these days is people breaking into homes, especially ones still under construction, and stealing the oven doors. They then put these in HDTV cardboard boxes they find being thrown out and sell them at flea markets as HDTV's. They're about the right size and weight, and if you're the sort of person who would buy a TV at a flea market you probably can't tell the difference looking down into the box.

Why would anyone want to buy a TV at a flea market? If I buy a TV in a box at a place other than a retail store, I would certainly open up the box and look inside so I would see what I'm getting before I drive off with it.

  7. it must have a digital tuner (ATSC). some of them only have analog tuners (NTSC) but can be fed an HD signal from another source.

An article in Thursday's (February 22, 2008) Houston Chronicle, page D4, answered my question:

...the "DTV conversion" refers to "digital television." That refers [to] the type of signal transmitted to the TV and is different from HDTV...

So if I'm interpreting that correctly, would I be wasting my money if I bought one of those HDTVs?

  8. Imagine automobiles driving into the center of the old dome and watching a movie? May as well park your car in the garage close the garage doors and leave car runnning. Cough!, cough! Hee Hee just kidding! :D

Yes, if someone wanted to commit suicide, they would simply go watch a movie and leave the windows up and the engine running.

I found one of the hour long collections.. It's still there.. It dupes some of those above, but a few are different..

    IE: has some Edsel commercials..

    Classic car commercials http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFXEps2KMJg

I also added a few more car clips.. IE: 35 and 36 chevy leader news.

A few more random network ID's, some program clips to jog some memories.

    50-60's tv http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmBVkJf80eU

This one is a collection of RCA commercials. Almost like a mini history of TV sets and radios.

Well, from the RCA point of view anyway.. It's about an hour long also, but pretty good.

Lots of picture tube commercials are included. I still remember those days..

Replacing a picture tube was pretty common, and I even remember us having to change

one back in the early 60's in our old 50's Admiral. These days most TV's have become disposable..

In one set of color 1960 ad's, the sound seems to be damaged.. it's not your set..

But they are still pretty good. The sound comes back after those are over..

BTW, I had to re edit this post.. I added another reply, and for some reason it

thrashed the whole deal.. Maybe this will bring back into order..

Earlier today I was in Wal-Mart looking at TVs. I looked at two flatscreens, both 15". One was a Sony and the other one was a Polaroid. Both said that they were HDTV. Is that what will fulfill the requirements for the digital transition that will occur a year from now? Should I buy one now, or would I be wasting my money?

  10. That was a really cool link! I never knew lightning had stuck one of the drive ins!

Oops I think this topic has spiraled into a drive in topic not Gulfgate of 1950's. :o

The Winkler Drive-In Theatre was right by Gulfgate on the corner of Winkler Drive and Flowers Street. I wish someone had a photo of it.

    No way,

They would shoot out the screens and tag all over them. Society is no longer civilized. No Drive-In's could ever be the way they used to be. Insurance would be too expensive then owners would have to hire security (like Fort Knox).

People are just too insane.

Maybe that's what could be done with the Astrodome. Inside, nobody could vandalize it. And it could stay open year-round. I remember most people didn't want to go to a drive-in theatre in the winter time or when it would rain.

  11. Every car took a speaker from a pole they parked next to and hung it on their window. The sound did not come from the screen as in indoor movie theatres. Later incarnations of the Drive In would play the sound on a radio frequency and you could tune your car radio to the designated station on your dial and you could get sound through your car radio.

Yes, the last time I went to a drive-in theatre was in 1984 when I was in college in Arkansas. It was called an "autoscope." (This one showed only x-rated movies). There were individual screens arranged in a circle. You would select a screen, park in front of it, and tune your car radio to the station that was posted at the entrance.

If not a regular drive-in theatre, I wonder if an autoscope drive-in theatre would do well in Houston?

  12. and on Thursday's and Sunday's they serve the delicious steaming hot turkey and gravy! Yum, yum!

It's a miracle they are still in beez wax!

A trip back in time for sure kiddies! :D

    P403642986_01.jpg

Yes, it looks like it's privately-owned. But that doesn't mean that the food isn't good. If a place serves good food, most people simply overlook the appearance of the building.

  13. As bizarre as it seems, this crazy thing used to be seen around our city quite often. Does anyone know when about it 1st started passing through Houston? I personally remember seeing it about the late 1960's as a kid. The second you saw it man it was like New Year's to us! Not sure how mom managed to keep driving as we were just going bonkers and started breaking out in the theme song.

written in 1963 by Richard D. Trentlage:

Oh, I wish I were an Oscar Mayer wiener

That is what I truly want to be

'Cause if I were an Oscar Mayer wiener

Everyone would be in love with me.

Oscar Mayer is also famous for their Wienermobile, which has toured the United States for over 70 years. The first Wienermobile was created in 1936.

    Oscar-Meyer-Wienermobile.jpg

Yep, there's nothing better than a warm weiner in a warm bun.

  14. Most middleastern countries have bathrooms with just holes in the ground. At the airport in Dubai it is this way. There is also "western"ized stalls now.

In India, the public "relief stations" have two rocks in front of each seat for people to knock together to cover up the sound of their flatulence because it is impolite to make that noise in public.

In Saudi Arabia there are no rolls of tissue in the public stalls. Just an empty coffee can filled with rusty water for the user to simply dip his fingers into when he/she is ready to cleanup.

  15. Everytime I walk past that site, there's a band on the corner and a homeless guy always wanting my money.

But, I really hope that some other person buys this site and builds something on it (something not equaling another McDonald's).

Does Houston have any kind of ordinance against panhandling?

  16. It seems an unlikely location, but there is a Buddhist temple in Dickinson, on 646 near Hwy. 6. I noticed it riding one day, stopped, and the monks gave me a tour. Very cool. :)

    Here's the legend:

"Siddartha's (the founder of Buddhism) mother (in around 560 B.C.E.) dreamed that when a white elephant's trunk touched her side, she became pregnant. The unborn Buddha, then existing four cosmic levels above the human plane of existence, in the Heaven of the Satisfied Gods, had been waiting for a pure and worthy mother to appear on earth."
