  1. There is generally not enough water in the bayous to make this feasible.
  2. Pappas isn't the best, but it is by far not the worst. The place on 610 East of Ella near Lowes is not good at all. Dickeys is mediocre, an dthere are others where the brisket is dry and obviously cooked in an oven.
  3. Town Lake (the real name) flows through a largely limestone area, not through sand and mud. Hosuton's Bayous do not flow through clean rocky areas, but through silty, muddy areas. Short of concreting the entire length of the bayou, and closing off any feeder streams that carry silt, we are not going to have blue water. This is why we do not have white sand beaches here as well - the rivers dump huge quantities of silt and dirt into the Gulf.
  4. Actually, I am not trolling. Houston isn't as cool as it was in the 80s. There's more to do, and more restaurants, but it's not quirky and cool. Tearing down the Pierce would contribute to a greater loss of cool. If I wanted urban core stuff, I would move to somewhere that grew that way.
  5. Why would that be a good thing? Urban cores are overrated, and aren't a Houston sort of concept. Downtown and Midtown were way more interesting before massive redevelopment started.
  6. I don't recall Main being full of potholes. I used Main quite a bit from 1976 to 1991, simply because it had less traffic, and was a pretty cool drive. I was banking at South Main Bank for much of that time, so heading out Main was a natural choice.
  7. I don't think spending upwards of 6 billion dollars to tear out the Pierce and reroute all the traffic around the North and East of Downtown is going to improve mobility noticeably. For that kind of money, we could redo all the streets, and maybe build some useful rail instead of the mediocre crap we have now.
  8. Honestly, that is one of the stupidest responses I could imagine. Neither of those issues is in any way related to whether the Pierce should stay or go.
  9. Do some research. The closing of public mental institutions was due to a variety of factors, including the Supreme Court ruling that the mentally ill who aren't a danger to themselves and others can't be held against their will. You can't lay the blame solely on Reagan.
  10. That would be a misguided move on the part of TxDOT. There's nothing wrong with the Pierce as it is, other than needing some fixes at the merges with other freeways.
  11. 2003. http://cantwellanderson.com/Texas_Communities.html
  12. The rates for the Villages are pretty much under half of Houston's rate. They do have a higher per property value, and have a much lower incidence of home grown crime. I would suspect the most common crime a Village resident commits is DUI. A colleague bought a house zoned to Memorial HS, and her kids graduate from there. She said the biggest thing about MHS was the drugs were higher quality, and that her kids would have received an equivalent education at just about any HS.
  13. Here's one link on negatives http://petapixel.com/2015/07/27/psa-many-film-processing-services-no-longer-return-your-original-film/ Yelp has a list of places that develop film here I did a bunch of black and white developing, which was pretty simple. Color is harder. Do a search, I 've seen a bunch of online resources in the past.
  14. This is BS. Going rate for building in the greater Heights area is more like $150 per square foot or more, with true high end work closer to $200. I had to get quotes on rebuilding our house to convince the insurance company that their replacement rates were too low.
  15. Memorial area has many acre size lots. Bunker Hill has a half acre minimum.
  16. And you are basing this on what? Did you go to Love and talk to the principal and teachers? Did you observe any classes? Or, did you just look at the school profile and think that a school with a lot of kids from poor homes has to be awful? We moved our kid from Love to Harvard 5 years ago., due to the IB program and the STEM magnet, we were otherwise very happy with Love. In hindsight, he would have been just as well off staying at Love. The teacher he had at Love was excellent, and the poor kids were motivated to learn, since many of them are transfers from other schools whose parents wanted them to get a better deal, and have a chance at a better education. As for Middle School, the Learn Local group seems to be doing a bang up job improving Hogg.
  17. Second the txtag. Far nicer folks than eztag
  18. Get a Texas Tag. No initial charge.
  19. As does whoever runs the toll roads in Austin. Once I found out I didn't need a tag in Austin, I just took the toll roads, and paid later.
  20. I am not necessarily against rail, but putting rail down Washington removes capacity from a major thoroughfare with few alternates. Center might work as a path for rail, but buses would be a lot cheaper and far more flexible. I don't think we really need more rail, at least not as implemented by Metro. I also think you are overestimating the popularity of light rail with business travelers. They tend to prefer cars or taxis, so they don't have to mix with the rabble.
  21. That's not going to happen either, as there's no good way to get light rail out there. There aren't many streets wide enough for light rail between Downtown and Northwest Mall. So, buses it is.
  22. Vik, just how does HSR get downtown without disrupting the existing freight lines? Do you really think UP or BNSF will put up with that disruption? There are no good routes to downtown except, possibly, along I-10, and that assumes TxDOT would be amenable. I have not seen a single viable plan to get HSR trains into Downtown.
  23. That assumes there's a reasonable way to get HSR to Downtown without major disruption to the areas the rail transits inside the Loop. I am not convinced that's possible.
  24. There's no place downtown for a station, and no reasonable way to get there if there were a station location.
  25. Northwest Mall is looking good as a terminus...
