  1. Redscare, no disrespect but I don't agree with some of your small -minded view points on how you think downtown should be. I think downtown needs some hot, well-known gathering spots. While some might not think so, HOOTERS is not the worst idea. I think in order for downtown to become more of a place where residents and visitors actually want to come, it needs more than just Mom and Pop stores.

People feel more comfortable shopping and eating at familiar places. I mean look at downtown New Orleans? It has some popular venues right inside of downtown on every block while the French Quarter has some more of the unique stores. With downtown Houston being the largest in the south, i feel downtown Houston could definitely step it up.

Just look at how downtown and uptown Houston rival eachother? Why does everything new and hip go uptown? Why does uptown have a residential population of 40,000 as opposed to downtown's population of 3,000?

I won't speak for anyone else but i get a better sense of action and see shops, hotels and restaurants that I am more familiar with in uptown. It's the reputable places people are attracted to at first, then they begin to explore the uniqueness portions of the city. That definitely helps with marketing the area as well.

I don't want to see Houston continue down the same track its been because in my opinion, downtown is mainly a tourist draw for the homeless right now.

  2. I hate to be the one to burst everyone's bubble but i figure most of you can't stand me anyway because i tend to speak the truth. So what the hell :)

I called the 818 number on the website and had an intresting little talk with the lady who answered the phone. She acted like she didn't really like her job that much because she tried various times to rush me off the phone.

I asked her to tell me a few details about the planned Houston Pavilions project. She didn't have anything to tell me. The only thing she said was, " The project hasn't been pubically announced yet, so there's really nothing to tell. I asked her, "Well there's a website, how is that not publicity?" She said that she knew of the website but there was no public announcement. So i asked her if the project was even going to happen. She said yes the project is going to happen but it hasn't been announced. So then she rushes me off the phone and i'm forced to hang up.

That's all i could get out the lady. Perhaps i got some lady who's so caught up in her own personal life that she didn't really want to go the extra mile and tell anything of the project. Be that as it may, if i depended on her entirely, i would say that this project doesn't sound too promising. :(

  3. why not uptown?

To tell the truth I like uptown better than downtown. I like downtown, but uptown is whats happening. Mabe if downtown had going on what uptown does, I would feel the same about it.

Hey KID, i just wanted to say i agree with you on that matter. Uptown does have a better VIBE to me than downtown, although i am excited at downtown's potential and hope it becomes the true city center with everything to offer. I remember getting in to it with this JOKE of a poster by the name of Professional Hornblower over this matter in one thread, who decided to criticize my perception rather than considering all factors.

  4. Thanks for the info TomV. i'll be there!

I was thinking since i'm not working that day, you guys might be able to share all of your votes here and i can bring them to the attention of the commitee because i will be attending the meeting now that i know about it.

  5. .

Houston's always been known for its bold nocturnal skyline dress despite not having loud neon outlines, blinking effects, fancy spotlighting and what not.  That is what makes downtown unique. It doesn't have to be like other cities that don't have bold skylines, those that need all the makeup and cosmetics for the night time display.  "Natural" beauty works for me in this case.

To me, we try and pretty up downtown Houston at night as you say, then there will be detractors who proffer, "Oh, poor low-esteemed Houston's trying to copy Dallas or Miami."

I do not refer to Christmas lighting but rather the natural lights from the offices at nights that speckle Houston towers...the way they fill up the majestic skyline...to me that will always be cool.  Very noir, yet letting H-town's architectural splendor speak for itself.

i don't think everyone is necessarily saying we gotta do all neon like DALLAS. But i'ma tell yall what MY BIGGEST problem is with Houston's lighting scheme. And I know i've said it before but i'll say it once AGAIN but I hate that almost every building in Houston has to have the SAME OL' white christmas lights surrounding the rooftops. Now that's just ME, i can't speak for everyone else like C2H but i don't want Houston to be so subtle and dull

Not you or anyone else on this forum will convince me that Houston's nightlit skyline belongs in the Traveler's magazine.

  6. I'm thinking of writing a letter to encourage better lighting to some of the buildings downtown Houston such as: Chase Tower, Chevron, Houston Centers (EXCEPT 5). I know this might seem a little insignificant to some of you all but i think a better nightlit skyline would better compliment what's happening at street level. Does anyone know the phone number and address and to whom i might need to send this letter of suggestion to? Any information would definitely be appreciated.

  7. I think that everyone realizes that downtown Houston could better pronounce itself at night. I know this might seem like a worthless topic but its something i feel pretty strong about. If so, what buildings do you think does Houston downtown skyline no justice at all at night? My picks are: The Chevron Tower with the white stripe lights surounding the top, BOA, Chase Tower, Houston Centers 1 &2. I would say the Exxon Mobil building but at least they added some color to their lighting the rooftop with blue as opposed to white lighting which makes the skyline appear more fashionalble. I only say Houston needs better pronounciation at night downtown because everytime i visit Dallas or even Austin i grow a tad more envious each time at their lighting techniques for their skylines at night. Why can't Houston get on the ball? It's a great vibrant city that could stand to present itself in a more exciting presentable way.
