  1. One of my friends lives on Cayton, and he leaves his front door open all the time with just a screen door. I think he has lost his mind. I don't think it is that bad but at the same time its life in the big city, not Mayberry. But he hasn't had a problem yet. They have a citizen on patrol thing, which was implemented years ago when crime was a lot worse. Apparently it seems to have helped some.

I feel relatively safe. One of my neighbors has had his garage broken into. But that happens lots of places.

I'd be much happier if all the apartments on Broadway were gone. Some I'm not sure how they haven't been condemned. There is no way they are safe to live it or follow any building codes.

  2. I don't cook so it will probably be all I need. It will certainly be convenient. It seems to be a part of an overall light rehab of that shopping center which is certainly welcome. Its not earth-shattering but I will take any improvement I can get. :D

Exactly, I'm just glad its not empty space any longer so I will definately utilize it.

The other space will open soon too. I can't remember how to spell the name of the other store going in. I call it Mexico's Weiners. Mostly because they took over many of the old Weiner's stores when Wieners closed and it has the same type/style of merchandise.

  3. Any of you glenbrookers been into the new Grocery store on broadway where i think the last tennant was the old Rice/Grocery World in the early 90's?

    Save-A-Lot stores headed to Houston

A grocery concept called Save-A-Lot is entering the Houston market.

The St. Louis-based chain offers an assortment of value-priced groceries in a relatively small space. An Alief store opens Nov. 9, a Hobby Airport-area location opens Nov. 16, and a Fondren southwest-area store opens in January.

Save-A-Lots are 14,000 to 16,000 square feet. Supermarkets are often 40,000 to 90,000 square feet.

A total of 12 Save-A-Lots are scheduled to arrive in the area by spring of next year.

There are more than 1,150 Save-A-Lots in 42 states.

Looks like a interesting place, certainly for the basics.

    www.save-a-lot.com

I popped in yesterday. It's good for basics. Most of the items are off-brand. But even the brand stuff was priced great. Not huge selections obviously since it's a fraction of the size of most full grocery stores. I'll probably be there often for basics since it's practically in my back yard and it's easier to get in and out of than going to Kroger if there are just a few items you need. (Coca-cola product are current $1.97 a 12-pk)

Frankly I usually just go to Kroger for a few basics anyway since the nearest Kroger is pretty half-ass.

One interesting thing, the cashiers don't bag your groceries. They put them back in your basket and then you can bag at a separate counter area. Or of course use your own reusable bags.

  4. I'm curious about the bids to re-do the pool.

I'll be starting a house next month that has a pool in disrepair.

    flipper

So far I got one bid for around $9,000 which includes replacing the tile, replacing the coping, increasing the size of the steps and resurfacing. That price also included estimated repair/replacement of the light fixture and pool motor which also weren't working.

I have a list of people to call for other bids, but life and work got in the way. I think a basic resurface with the tile & coping replacement would be in the $6000 range. But I really want my current steps extended so that adds to my bids.

  5. One more: I know that already. I still want names, because the names exist anyway. If two different trucks in a given station have two names, then I would like both :) - If the station has no names, then it has none.

The trucks don't have names either. Just what they are and the station number. Engine/Pumper 29, Ladder 29, and Abulance 29 all live together at Station 29. On the side of the truck it would say E-29, L-29 or A-29.

  6. I see what you are saying. Just forget the fence idea all together and dig the Rio Grande DEEPER and about a halfmile wider, fill it with Alligators and Crocodiles. That IS a good plan. :P:lol:

Best plan I heard so far. And surely cheaper than a stupid fence, yeah people never figure out how to get over a fence.

  7. Ivy is growing wild on the exterior wall. I want to get rid of all of it, but my husband wants to keep some of them. We don't have time to take care and trim them in good shape. Any suggestion? Is it a good idea to get rid of it? Any tips?

Thx in advance. Nice forum and enjoy it. I will post a few pictures showing the floor we put in.

I'd love to know how to kill this too. We ripped it off the brick it was growing on and have tried a variety of vegitation killers. The crap keeps coming back. It's like the cockroach of the plant world.

  8. To even insinuate Kinky is racist is absurd. If you knew him you would know that. It seems to me someone was getting scared Kinky was catching up in the polls and pulled something from years ago and presented it in a convoluted manner.

Kinky is Kinky and says what he thinks and feels. He speaks for himself.

IMO if Kinky made it to the state house it would not be politics as usual. I do not think his allegiance would be to the campaign contributors (see tpj.org) but to the people, the citizens of this state.

Let's not forget what our present Gov. called someone a little while back when he thought the mikes were off. Nothing else needs to be said.

I agree he's no racist. He actually participated in civil rights movements in Austin when restarants were still segregated. He may do and say things that people don't like, but he's not a racist.

I'm not surprised he's the only one who has put his foot in his mouth. You actually have to talk to people to make mistakes.

If I hear Grandma tell me she's gonna shake Austin up one more time, I will scream. She's had plenty of time to shake it up and instead focused on changing political parties so she could move up the line.

  9. For a long time there were two Dillard's in Baybrook Mall. I hated it.

Two of anything in one place is one two many...or sometimes, two too many!

The 2 Dillards in Baybrook, and maybe First Colony?, weren't duplicate stores though. Didn't they split out the merchandise so all women's was in one and men's was in the other. I remember it was like that when they first split into 2 stores in one mall. I hated it too.

  10. From your wallet and any thing else you got. A normal citizen can not get elected because it to expensive. People need to wake up.

Exactly why I support a true independent. It's ridiculous that it takes million in a war chest to begin to consider running for office.

  11. Louisiana State Police must REALLY LOVE their Willie.

Who else gets a MISDEMEANOR ticket for carrying 1-1/2 POUNDS of weed?!?

It was just citations because of the number of people on the bus. He wasn't the only one cited, just the only one named on the news. The news report I saw said that if one person would have claimed all of the stash, then that person would have been charged with a much harsher crime. But divide that stash between all the people on the bus and you get a bunch of minor possession tickets I guess.

  12. Brazilian Teak or Cocobolo Rosewood. I lean more to the Cocobolo Rosewood because of the grain.

ding, ding, ding I think we may have a winner. I believe Cocobolo was the wood listed in the mls listing when this house was last on the market. I'd still check with neighbors, but that triggering my memory. I remember that it wasn't something I had ever heard of before like the other woods.

  13. I'm getting bids to resurface my pool. It's your basic 20x40 simple rectangle. I'm trying to decide about tile options. The pool co. showed me your basic blue tile and some other that are more rustic. None I've seen are hitting me as something that compliments the my mcm home.

I've looked online but can't find any close up pics of mcm pools to see the tile details. Anyone have photos of classic mcm pools? Any ideas? I've bought some great mosaic tile for my kitchen. Would that work for pool tile? Seems it would be more complimentary to the house than the normal pool tiles.
