  1. LOL! I went to Aldine (1990 State and National Champions, baby!) and we're also the Mustangs. Back when I was there (early 1980s), we had a fiberglass Mustang mascot named Pegasus that the cheerleaders wheeled around after touchdowns. He was even on the cover of one of my yearbooks. Funny thing about Pegasus was that he was anatomically correct in every way, including his, ahem, nether regions. Normally he was on all four legs. But as he was being wheeled around after a score, he was raised onto two legs in a sort of "reverse bucking" kind of stance (hope I described that right). And when he was in this stance, well... let's just say he was in all his "glory." LOL! I stopped going to games after awhile (too far removed from the school), but when they were moved into a football district with the Spring Branch schools, they would play at Tully Stadium, just few miles or so from where I lived. So I started going again when they would play an away game there. But while the team, band, flag corp and dance squad all showed, there was no Pegasus. I always wondered if they might have yanked him because it was either castrate him or else. LOL!
  2. LOL! Good ol' Bill's. I once told my sister-in-law that if she didn't behave herself and start being nice to me, I was doing my Christmas shopping for her at Bill's. That message sure got through. ROTF!
  3. I believe it was Channel 39 that did the Rangers games in the 1970s. I don't remember ever seeing any night games, seems as if they were only weekend day games. Channel 2 did the Astros games in the early and mid 1970s and they might show at most at game or two a week and only road games. Usually it was the weekends with an occasional weeknight game in the summer. I remember watching a weeknight 1975 Astros-Braves game (back when the Braves had Hank Aaron and that cool uniform with the stylized feather on the sleeves). There might have been 300 people in the stands.
  4. The one on Washington has closed. Last I checked, there was a Pig Stand in Seguin, but whether it's still there or not is unknown. The food at the one on Washington wasn't that good and was overpriced to boot. We used to go to the ones in San Antonio when I was a kid and when I learned there was one on Washington when I got a job in the vicinity, I was thrilled. Man, what a disappointment. True, walking in the joint was like walking into a time machine. It looked like something out of the 1950s or 1960s. It also looked like they hadn't cleaned it since then either. And the Pig Sandwich was nothing special whatsoever. Nothing at all like I remembered it. The french fries that came with the meal were good, but that was it. And I wasn't too keen on paying nearly $8 for it either. Part of me thinks it was a shame the Pig Stand closed, but part of me thinks it outlived it's time.
  5. Don't know a great deal about the Brazosport area other than some friends of the family used to have a beach house in a place called Turtle Creek about a mile or two from Surfside. When we stayed there we went into Lake Jackson and Clute alot. Seemed like a really nice place to live. Probably won't ever contribute much to this thread other than that, but I hope some others who know about the area do as I'd like to learn more about Brazosport. Good luck. I once had a thread on the Aldine area and was pleasently surprised how many people contributed to it before we pretty much exhausted the thread a few months later. There's a lot of smart folks on this board and I couldn't believe howe much they knew.
  6. And there used to be a Picadilly's in Greenspoint Mall. Only went there once. 'Bout sums it up for the quality of their food. Oddly enough, the one in Northline Mall was pretty good. Used to go there with my grandparents alot.
  7. Bush IAH opened in June 1969, although I can't find the exact date.
  8. Someone else started a thread on this awhile back. Unfortunately, they never got any responses. I hope you have better luck.
  9. I think you're referring to L'Tour d'Argent, but I stand to be corrected.
  10. Same goes with Smokey and the Bandit. There's certainly no art (or plot) there either. Once a woman here at work was asking why movies like this are so popular with guys. "Shoot, what guy doesn't want to drive a fast car, drink beer and pick up girls? It's every guy's dream!" And I don't even drink and barely know anything about cars. LOL! I really wanted to see the Gumball Rally when it was in theatres. But the gang, as it was, wanted to see Bad News Bears. Not that I came out on the short end cause that was a great flick too. But I had to wait years before I finally got to see Gumball Rally. How did we ever survive without VCRs or DVDs?
  11. Those movie titles are a nostalgia trip. Gumball Rally - entertaining movie that was overshadowed by the more farsical and star studded Cannonball Run a few years later. Every now and then, the Speed Network will show it and I watch it every time. "Franco isa reddy! Nowa de race canna beegin." Even to this day, I've never seen Death Race 2000. I remember it caused quite a stir back in 1975/76 when it came out and there was a video game based on the movie that debuted at that time (perhaps one of the first movie/video game tie-ins). I did play the game once at the local skating rink until they pulled it due to its controversial nature. Stepford Wives was a great movie. They showed the remake a few days ago on cable and bleeeech, what a waste. Katherine Ross, what a hottie. I make sure I catch her movies whenever they come on.
  12. Hey, totally off topic, but speaking of the Napoleon Solo, the American Life Network (which for me is on the digital tier) shows the Man From Uncle every Wednesday night at 8 p.m. Last night, they showed the unaired 90-minute pilot. There were some fairly major changes from this pilot and what eventually became the final show as we know it. First, this pilot was entitled "Solo" not the Man From Uncle although the music and graphics were the same. Also, there was no Mr. Waverley. Another man played the head of Uncle. I think he was black, albeit light skinned. That would have been very ground-breaking for the time. Thirdly, while Ilya Kuryakin was in the show, he was not Solo's partner, but an Uncle headquarters technician. Solo basically worked solo.
  13. Not sure how far I'd trust that list. Very first thing on it is wrong. The Airline theatre opened in either 1949 or 1950 (most likely 1950), not 1955. I've seen ads for it going back that far. So if it's wrong on the first item, who knows what else may be in error. Well, actually, I do. The Greens Crossing theatre opened in 1985, not 1990. And Deauville on the North Freeway opened in 1975, not 1990. Oh well... it's a nice starting place for research.
  14. Does anyone know when the Melrose (ME ) exchange started? I grew up in Northline Terrace, and that was Hillcrest (HI) from 1955 on. But before the area got HI, it was ME. However, when I looked in old phone books for the exchange maps, I couldn't find anything for the areas outside the city (as this area was back then) prior to 1950. I know the area did have ME at least as far back as 1935, but know how much further back it went.
  15. I don't know a thing about HISDs history, but there are probably several posters (including isuredid and vicman) who could help you on that. I know a lot about Aldine ISD, should you have any question on that district. Thanks for your great info on Cedar Bayou. I liked that part about the basketball gym. That was funny. Call it a "home court advantage." From my research on Aldine's FB team, I know that Cedar Bayou cancelled its 1943 season - ostensibly to conserve gasoline for the war effort. At least that's what they said. La Porte also cancelled their 1943 campaign, but they did so because a tornado from the surprise July hurricane of that year destroyed the school. I only have Cedar Bayou's FB records for the years they played Aldine. I know they had a good team in several years, but during the time they were in Aldine's district, they didn't win any titles. Game results 1942 Aldine 52 Cedar Bayou 0 1943 cancelled 1944 Aldine 21 Cedar Bayou 6 1945 Aldine 13 Cedar Bayou 6 1948 Aldine 27 Cedar Bayou 13 1949 Aldine 6 Cedar Bayou 6 (tie) Aldine won series 4-0-1. Cedar Bayou's record: 1942 0-9-0 (0-6-0 in 27-1A) 1943 cancelled 1944 5-2-1 (4-2-0 in 27-1A) 1945 7-2-0 (4-2-0 in 27-1A) 1948 4-5-1 (4-2-0 in 25-1A) 1949 6-2-2 (4-2-2 in 25-1A)
  16. Best I can determine, and i stand to be corrected, was from 1942 to 1960.
  17. I don't know the answer myself, but I know who will. You need a poster named isuredid. He knows everything and what he doesn't know, he knows how and where to find. Have patience... I'm sure he'll come across this thread.
  18. Glad you enjoyed it. We probably did cross paths. However, I went to classmates.com and looked up my class and I swear, I had never heard of half the names that appeared as part of the Class of 84. I looked 'em up in my yearbook and apparently they did go to Aldine with me... maybe they are also wondering who the heck I was too.
  19. At long last I've finished my history of the Aldine Mustangs football team. If you would like a pdf, PM me or send your request to aldinefootball@sbcglobal.net. I have two versions available. The comprehensive version contains the scores and standings from 1936 to 2006, as well as a timeline of the history of the current Aldine High School/Airline Drive area. It's a large file (6.5 MB), so if you're on dialup and want this, you might want to consider using a file-sharing service such as yousendit.com. There's also a 1 MB football-only version. Either of these are free for the asking and I'm only too happy to share the fruits of my research with anyone interested.
  20. Probably a little of both. Excited about Lee and glad we finally got Williams (who's wanted to play here for ages)... but wondering if Garner is going to grab someone out of the stands to pitch behind Oswalt.
  21. I remember passing by that hotel when I was a kid in the 1970s and seeing the sign out front that said, "Rooms $2." Even in 1973 that was waaaayyyy old. The other flea bags were charging $6 by that time. Inflation, I guess. LOL!
  22. OUCH! now that's crooked. A harsh cut, to be sure... but true!
  23. Did you find that on the Titan's site? Reason is, there used to be something like that on there, but I couldn't find it earlier today. 99.6 percent in 1992. Granted, that's not 104%, but unless my math is incorrect, that's 4 tenths of a percent less than a full house. Houston supported the team. If 99.6 percent of capacity isn't good enough for an owner, then HE, not me, has a problem. In 1993, there was a justifiable backlash against the Oilers blowing the Buffalo game. In 1994, there was further backlash against them bowing meekly at home in the first round of the playoffs against KC and, add to that, the team was horrible in 1994. In 1995, Adams was openly courting Nashville. Houston supported the Oilers. Bud Adams did not support Houston. Art Modell gets villified for leaving a 60 year old decrepit stadium. Bud Adams gets a pass for putting out an inferior product and then walking away from the fans he gyped in a stadium renovated just for him not 10 years before. Go figure. LOL!
  24. LOL! Yeah... folks are really going to show up for a lame duck team once the owner has announced he's moving. OF COURSE they're not going to play to capacity then. Sheesh! Use some common sense. Try the last full season BEFORE Adams started his shennanigans.
