So I drove around Midtown tonight. Drove not walked. I like my car. It was nice to see a lot of people out walking from bar to bar. They seemed to be having a good time.
I noticed these new spots: Christians Tailgate, Deco, Bond, H-town Diner, some wine bar in Post, Wet Spot, Pub Fiction, Komoodos, Thirsty Cactus. If you add these to all of the older places you probably have 20 or more bars and restaurants in a square mile. How many bars have already come and gone. Why do people want to own bars so bad.
Is this good for the neighborhood? Is this the next Shepherd Square or Richmond Strip? When will the shootouts start? Has the ugly crown moved in to push the hip crowd out yet. Who's got the vision and the money to make it in this hyper-competitive zone? Is Midtown a future slum? I've heard it on the streets and read it on this board, that Midtown is the next Gulfton Ghetto.
What do you think? I don't care what Harvard thinks!

Thanks for the info.
We have made a few offers on houses in the neighborhood. My wife is pretty fired up about this pocket of homes. I've driven this neighborhood and the others that surrond it, North of Bellaire, West of Gessner, and across 59 by HBU. The other neighborhoods don't seem as safe and well kept up as the one we are discussing. There seems to be some very nice streets and the upkeep of the homes is great. We have talked to long term residents and they have all been very positive. We have noticed young and old couples out walking at night. I've heard the same things about flooding and crime, very little.
I live in the hood right now (3rd ward) so I feel like I can live anywhere and with anyone. The school options are good considering all of the private schools in the neighborhood. I also think new Chinatown on Bellaire is one of the greatest assets to Houston.
Yakuza, do you ever use the park? Is the temple veitnamese or chinese? there seems to be one apartment complex in the middle of the neighborhood behind the school/temple, on triola or carvel off of tanglewilde. is it quiet/safe? do you know much about the planned improvement to bellaire and fondren intersection? is their a homeowners association?
thanks,

I looked at this home a few weeks ago and almost bought it but it had some foundation and repair issues that freaked my wife out. The owner told me the home was designed and built by Lucian Hood in the 50's. It's a very cool house. You mod guys will love it.
It's 7818 Nairn on www.har.com

I was wondering if anyone lives in or knows much about this area of Sharpstown. The boundries are Bellaire to the North, Fondren to the East, 59 & Beechnut to the South and Gessner to the West. In the middle of this neighborhood on Mary Bates Street is a Catholic Church and Private School called St. Francis De Sales, a City Park, Sharpstown Middle School, an Asian Temple, and a small HISD Elementary School. It feels kind of secluded from what I think of when I hear the word Sharpstown.
Specifically, I'm looking for feedback on quality of life, crime/safety, flooding, school info, etc.
Thanks,

I still say this is an awkward location, parking is limited and visibilty is poor. I'm not convinced. Their food better be great or there may be another for lease sign up soon.

Thanks. Yes, I am going to have to buy the wife a 525 Wagon someday to make up for it.
Dang deers!
Coog,
I've got a 2000 540i Wagon for sale. My wife bought it for our new baby but the car is to fast and sporty for her. You can go 200mph to the grocery store. She bought a 740il the other day and the 540 is on a used car lot in Montrose for sale.

These are the greatest townhomes Ive ever seen!
Just kidding, I am the builder of this project., its a very nice project. I am really trying to focus on offering a property that has extremely nice finishes in it as well as quality construction. I use things like high grade trusses, tyvek, Tech shield (many units)... under the skin and great looking hardwoods, stainless steel backsplash's, cool sinks, cool faucets, nice tile and different paints. The arch I used on this project does a pretty good job but I am moving on to a different arch now. I hired one guy for a small project on Pinemont that is pretty plain but that's really what is probably good for the area. My next project after that will be on the east side at St Emanuel and Clay and I am working with another guy. One of the things I am looking for is someone that is accessable. I can't tell you how many times an architect has told me that the reason they aren't ready is because they have been busy. Hell we are all busy. So I am really looking for a quality designer, affordable prices, and loves to talk to me=). I am real excited about the St Emanuel and Clay project. It will be two 2 story units on St Emanuel and one 3 story stand alone unit on clay. My plan is to have roof decks. If no roof decks I want to put a 5 foot balconies. My plan is to offer these units in the $190K-240K range. My hope is for the 190K but we will see.
I used Ikea cabinets in my last project and they looked great! However, they were a little of a pain in the you know what. I want to find a good looking affordable cabinet that is comparable to the IKEA look. Anyone know of any?
js,
has this project sold out yet? what is left? are you going to be the builder on the newly cleared lot at hutchins and jefferson? where are your other developments? i'm interested in buying in this neighborhood. thanks

I drove by this building today and there is a huge sign on the front that says, Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. ??? Uh, I don't get it. This building is in Houston. Just like our Government to get all confused and waste money, they'll probably change the sign in a year or two for $100k. Go check it out next time your driving down Allen Pkwy.

I saw him on Mothers Day when I was out on the west side of town.
He's the new fryer guy at Raising Cane's. He seems real happy!

In the last post from Squatter Kid he said, "he was off to the Bay Area for the Winter." That was back in Novemeber. He said he was coming back to Htown in Jan. He's either locked up or traveling the country. Who knows? I'm looking forward to his return. I believe he is still the "man to beat" as far as getting into the tallest empty buildings in Houston.

I agree. Chef Marco has the best Italian food in Houston. I wish the restaurant was bigger and the tables were not so bunched together. The food is fantastic.

The homeless are coming back to the Pierce Elevated. The last few days I've driven by the newly fenced in areas of the Pierce and the homeless are simply setting up camp along the fence line. Basically they are back to business as usual, this is really sad. Unfortunatley, I really don't have any solutions, the homeless seem to like this area as it is close to food and services. I guess we are stuck with all 12,000 of them.

i've heard from a new homeowner that perry homes has sold 90 homes just east of this location, close to polk and live oak. they are sold out. this homeowner loves the neighborhood and has not had any problems.
i think this would be a cool place to live, however i would recommend getting extra security as their is a lot of petty theft and crime in the area. if you want to talk off line about the neighborhood send me a pm as i own a buiseness down the street from this location and know a lot about the area.

this looks great. i can't wait to see the finished park.
what about the bums? this is prime homeless parkland. i think they may reclaim their lost land. i'm interested to see how the downtown leaders deal with this issue.

good luck in that location, this look like a good fit. i'm starting to think this spot has some bad mojo. a little like the numerous failed restaurants at hazard and westheimer.

I read somewhere that Seattle has more parks per captia than any city in America. That's Awesome!
Anyone know much about the parks system in Seattle?
