  1. I had sought repeatedly every now and then, to find  the recording of the channel 11 End of Broadcasting Day. I mainly remember a male singer with a great voice. I never thought to check in here with y'all. I used love staying up late enough just to listen to that wonderful song.

  2. On ‎8‎/‎22‎/‎2017 at 6:46 PM, Nathan Burkhalter said:

I am Dr. Burkhalter's grandson. To not get to long, but yes my grandfather did operate on a horse in the OR, most everything about him is true. After moving to Fredericksburg he was charged with the attempted murder of my grandmothers new lover, and convicted. In 1993 he took in 5 of us grandchildren to rase. He was an incredibly intelligent man. He was also a controling psychopath. In Fredericksburg he leased out a house on the property and in 1999 the tenant was discovered dead. On his deathbed my grandfather admitted to killing him after the two got into an argument reguarding herman killing his horse. He was poisoned. Dr. Burkhalter passed in 2012.

Nathan, I grew up a block away from some of your aunts and uncles that lived on Harrop St. Dr. B as we called him delivered me into this world  July 1956. and was Our families doctor. I have lived thru all the stories of your Grand father, but knew the gentler side of him. I remember I December of 1976 that I almost killed myself trying to Locate Dr. B. my sister was in a bad way delivering her 1st child. I drove like a madman to his home behind the Old Woolco store. I later found out that he was driving all the way in from San Antonio to help save my sister's life. I know all the Bad , but He was a Man we all Loved and Respected. He even refused to accept his doctor fee from Momma for any of Our doctor visits. Thought I would share with you something kinder than what you had to live thru. Dr. B. had his Demons but he once was a Kind Hearted Man / Family Doctor as well.

  3. A post from a Pasadena Facebook Citizen. "

Just received an email from the Bay Area Houston Business Development Update:

Pasadena Economic Development Corporation purchased a former bank building on the corner of Pasadena Blvd. at Southmore Blvd. and plans to demolish the building and sell the 4.8-acre site. The 12-story building was built in 1962. It will take approximately four months for the remediation and the demolition." The Tall Lady of Pasadena " Texas has been declared an eyesore and is slated for demolition, after the Asbestos has been removed. I am going to Miss her.

  4. They also read the article about no property taxes and were intrigued by that.

They are both retired and are really just moving to be closer to my kids - they need a safe, friendly place that won't put too heavy a strain on their retirement incomes. If there are other neighborhoods where they can get a three bedroom house for less than $225K and be in a nice community, they would be interested.

I have a senior friend that lives in a very nice gated senior community [ Bellvilla ] on Scarsdale in Pearland bought hers 3 or 4 years ago for $125,000 Clean quiet has walk path around manmade ponds with fountains, clubhouse community pool, light up for christmas, U S Flags displayed proudly on holidays.

  5. Oh, and i thought that Pasadena was supposed to be in the coastal prairies and bay subsection, i know

its mostly all Pearland but , i know for sure that the the second largest city in the Houston Area isn't a Houston

    Neighborhood.

Ride on a Metro Bus from Townsquare Mall into H Town how cool is that, it will be on Harris street as it once was back in the early 70's when we had a line that took you downtown to the Greyhound terminals. I think I like the idea, after driving out to 290 last month to the the appraisal district offices I'll plan a metro trip for next year's fight, those freeways scare me to death. Not really but the Bumps on hwy 610 loop made my old 81 F-250 feel every one of those Painful Bumps, my fingers were glued to the steering wheel for that trip.

  6. I think you're wrong to say it will never be a nice area as long as the refineries are there. Pasadena between 225 and Southmore WAS a very nice place to live in the 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s.

Tree lined streets of very nice well maintained bungalow style homes, and the refineries were there then. People who lived there took pride in their homes and surroundings.

It was one of the nicest neighborhoods you ever saw, but it started going down badly in the 80s and 90s.

The refineries had nothing to do with that. And they have nothing to do with the way it looks today.

Ouch those comments about Pasadena HURT!

As a citizen of Pasadena since 1956 yes I still live here, Your hometown is full of memories and Family and Friends. For all of you snobs over in H Town if it were not for Pasadena, Channelview,Baytown,La Porte............. were would you all be ?

The Champion/Simpson/Pasadena Papermill is no longer a threat to your health or delicate noses. Our Family came to Pasadena,Texas in 1947 as a part of that Papermill's expansion.

Pasadena has many old and beautiful neighborhoods in the northside which is comprised of 100,000 plus residents of our 150,000 population. We feel we have been put on a back burner for far too many years by city officials that broke more promises that they kept [90%] in several decades.

To insult Our town with Stink lines is cruel, every community in America has to contribue it's fairshare to develope and fuel this country, Doctors,Lawyers,Masons,Electricians,Refinery Techs,Ditch Diggers..................you take the good with the bad. Many folks around here wish we had a perfect plan for survivial but Houston is just a Older bigger Pasadena so get over yourselves and be more consructive and a little less destructive with your opinions in here. If you all want to really help us be more pleasing to your Eyes and sinus system we could levy a special TAX from H Town and surrounding beautiful people areas to fund our Beauty Makeover so to speak, a sort of share the wealth TAX.

Limited income senior and families and tenants of slumlords don't have the resources to improve the properties they live in and since Ike hit many are still in recovery mode, the Blue Roofs are Proof of needs unmet by Insurance providers.

"Can't we all just get along?"

  7. The windows are now partially boarded. (looks like they are trying to leave openings to vent moisture)

The top of the tower had the brick facing peeled away from the concrete block underneath.

This building is once again in danger.

Yes in deed Our Tall Lady of Pasadena is in Danger. Hurricane Ike has put this beautiful structure one giant step closer to a wrecking ball. A Friend on Pasadena City Council informed me that the Bank Tower has changed hands once more. With our current economic worries clouding our minds, saving great architecture opens the door & makes way for another fast food joint. I have voiced at City Council meetings countless times that something needs to be done at the cities level to protect our architectural Past for Our Future, as have many others.

  8. I have been meaning to talk to City Councilmember JJ Isbell, he has spoken to me several time about how the Firm that owns the 1st Pasadena State Bank Building wanted to Restore and reopen. I fear this damage will push him toward tearing her down or he mightpost-2235-1224434867_thumb.jpg be able to get hold of some FEMA money, to pay for Demolition.

oh yea, that was so unfortunate , the building was already in danger, and now this...
  9. I spent the night on the Texas this past weekend with my daughter's Girl Scout troop and discussed the proposed move with our tour guide. I would like to see the Texas moved to a dry observation building if the hull can support the ship.

It would be cool to be able to walk under the ship and around it from inside an observation buiding with catwalks to go tour the ship itself.

Currently, replacing the hull every 20 years because of its wet landing just seems expensive. Building a dry dock would be expensive, but presumably that would be a one-time expense.

Way back in the early 70's My Uncle and Oldest Brother and Sister worked various jobs on the Battleship TEXAS. I remember on year my whole family were allowed to ride out a Hurricane aboard the USS Texas, I slept in the Trophy Room right under the location that infamous Torpedo breached the hull, the one that did not blow.

Moving the Old Girl would be a really bad move the Ship channel water is far less corrosive that that salt water at Galveston would be. Leave her Be and get on to more important matters .....................

  10. Last night, I finally found how to get to the statues from Houston Ave. Unfortunately, a large gang of bums (or not bums) was loitering around the area, and I had to scram before I could take any pictures. Anybody know the story to those presidential statues?

Hope this helps you as to what thet are intended to be used for. Kind of a cool Idea

Large Presidential Statues to Anchor Texas Destination

    Mixed-use Development

Presidential Park at WaterLights, featuring large-scale 18-foot statues of all 42 U.S. presidents, is projected to draw 2 million people annually to a new entertainment/real estate development in the city of Pearland.

The presidential busts will be surrounded by pleasant water features and a navigable canal, said Richard Browne, principal of Historic Land Development LLC of Houston.

  11. For Post #78/ robsmithtx:

The old chemical plant logo was used during one of the past Mayor Johnny Isbell terms. The current city website webmaster probably has a bmp or gif file of it. The city still has souvenir desk flags, etc. that may also be available. Contact City Hall through the Mayor's Action Line (713-475-555) and ask for Wayne Holt, Publications Manager (wholt@ci.pasadena.tx.us).

By the way, the logo can be changed at the discretion of the Mayor, hence, the change when John Manlove took office 7 years ago.

The Old Pasadena Dog Pound Site on Hwy 225 before you get to Beltway 8, still has an Original Refinery Logo on it and is also sporting the old sage green paint that once was a signature city color.

  12. I just looked back through my photos and I took a bunch around the building site back in July. Here they are...

Great Photos, Thank You for Sharing them with us all I sure am Proud to see so many other folks that Love This Graceful Lady of Pasadena as much as I do. The Resigned former Mayor of Pasadena, John Manlove, could not be moved to answer

my questions about what was in the Future for the Bank Building. I was told by Council Woman Dana Philibert

that the Chamber of Commerce could better answer my concerns but that was a dead end. I will make a point of asking our new Mayor Jack Douglass, at our next Council Meeting. The developer that bought the former Bankone Location has just barely maintained the Landscape. I hope someone has it in the works to revitalizing the Building. Our Skyline won't be be the same without her, my Vote is for City Hall to move in and Save Our Tall Lady of Pasadena.

  13. Note merged Pasadena State Bank topics.

Well Thank You for the merge,I had misplaced the location of this original Thread. I finally found out how to add my photo file to e-mails ( new Camera No Skills ) How do you all add your photos as a picture and not as a few words and numbers to download. I want to add more but I only have 90.65k left to use for photos.

Have a Great Day Folks ,Come on Over to the Dark Side and Visit 2nd largest city in Harris County,Pasadena,Texas Your Neighbors South East Harris County Population 149,000 plus >:)

Landmark Our 1st Skyscraper Pasadena Blvd @ Southmore Ave.

Many of you all in Houston only see Pasadena from Hwy 225

be a little adventurous, hey we have been to your hometown!

We have our show place neighborhoods and a few slummy areas,

we are still in the infantcy of Our Developement.

  15. Can you be more specific? I just don't really understand what exactly is going on here. Examples would help.

One example was changing audits from every month to once a year, as many thought that would allow monies to be allocated and allow more time to hide those monies true use. Kind of like "oh well too late to do anything about that now".

Charter changes were voted on and voted NO for good reason, many felt underhanded manuvering was going on.

I am sorry I have a poor memory for the Charter Change mishandling and the city web site has since deleted their coverage and recordings.

A Project of grand Scale was the "Road to Nowhere" Strawberry road extention, was a home buyout of over 30 homes along Scott street and by all account the people in the neighborhood did not ask for it nor did citizen throughout Pasadena. But the current administration spent Millions of taxpayer dollars and have now lost residential taxes on all of those proprties forever. Displacement of over 30 families for nothing hurts even more. The Mayor and Council rushed that one past voters. If you are a Registered Voter you should try to attend a few of your city council meetings, your voice can make a difference.

  16. Well as politics go, Pasadena has had a colorful Political history, as do many Texas towns. Our current mayor , John Manlove pushed a major city charter change a little to fast for most folks. The whole list of charter changes were riddled with far too many unclear plans for a strong city maager governnent. The speed and methods used and orchastrated by the mayor and his hand picked charter review committee, of well known business persons, made the citizens against the drastic changes start getting the Vote No Movement all geared up. Most Vote No foks felt there was a hidden agenda, associated with how the mayor and some city council members mwere backing the changes and helping the mayor even though a vast majority of us realized we never asked for the changes. The masterplan was to hire a high priced city boss with what seemed like way too much power whilst stripping council members of controls that have been in their capable hands for several decades. " If it ain't Broken, don't fix it ' rally slogan came about from a group of citizens sponsered by many former mayors and council members that felt that the mayor was pushing a major change at voters without truely advising or educating them on the long term financial burdens and Governing format. At first the process was slow and easy and all of a sudden the whole plan was rushed to be voted on ( Non Mayoral ) at a time when fewer voters would bother to get out and vote. But thanks to the ones of us that were against the Charter Changes more citizens were United in stopping a plan that might have distroyed our Working form of Government. So now you have a little better understanding of why I stated in a Pasadena sub post " We have Spoken over here in Pasadena,Texas"

I only touched on the Charter Changes this time but believe me far to many under the table dealings are going on at your city government level and unless you take an active roll in watching them and attending city council meetings the changes these folks that you voted into office may very well slip a change by you that will negatively change yours and your families lives for decades to come.

  17. "We Have Spoken over here in Pasadena, Texas"

No change in our form of governing power base, sorry City Council that means no pay raise. There has been a battle going on about the proposed charter changes but more importantly the driving force behind the changes. The Pasadena Citizens let our Mayor know he did not pull the wool or bull over on us. " JUST SAY NO" was JUST VOTE NO in Pasadena and out with some of the old and in with some new or not so new council members. I just can't wait for Tuesday nights city council meeting, city politics is a starting point to learn about our government. So few even want to get off their behinds and experiance the drama, it really helps you understand the complexities of state and federal branches a little more.

  18. Sections are not created based on population. They are created based on popularity. If there are more Pasadena posts, it will warrant a Pasadena section.

I'll add this to the HAIFAQ

http://www.ci.pasadena.tx.us/citygram.htm#TV16 this is a link to Our Community channel so many of you Pasadena haters can see the positive side to our beautiful city. Now don't all of you go hate post on me just read the entries I have read and you will see the pattern there. We have our problems and god help us we are trying to find a path away from them, just as Houston has been trying. We would ship all of these refineries over to Katy or the Woodlands if we could, but as fate would have it we are stuck with them, deal with it just as we are, one day at a time and at times one gasp for air at a time.

this link is to a Pasadena Only site for sounding off as we are allowed to do here.

  19. Thank you,

Society doesn't want parents to touch their children to discipline them which only fuels the problem.

I recall while in church services we kids would start to snicker at a baby or something amusing. I was convinced my mom had an invisible mom-radar or would see us in the corner of her eye. She slowly and unbeknownst to the crowd would lean over and pinch the hell out of my arm. Tears started flowing and I stopped acting up. It worked and it wasnt a slap or punch, but I learned to respect especially in a house of worship.

We also got paddled up until Junior High school, quite humiliating and it worked. I was afraid to get in trouble as I knew I would have to face the principal and his large wooded paddled riddled with holes (for extra pain) plus them calling my mom to give her the low down. I learned. It straightened me out.

    Been there done that!

My mom, god rest her soul was diffinantly the one in charge. I remember mom would load all 5 of us up to go to church and we knew the rule while we were in God's house we, had better be angels, 9 out of 10 times all it took from our mom was that look she would give us and we stopped in our tracks. Once when mom and were over at my grandparents home for the day, papaw and I became buddies and out of nowhere I heard mom holler my whole name and told me to watch my mouth and to not talk to my papaw that way ever again, and to this day I don't even know what I said wrong.

My mom did not have to punish us often because we knew we were Loved and knew how much she had to sacrifice to put food on the table and a roof over our heads. Quality time does not always equate out be equaled by quantity of time. But back in those days God was allowed to attend school with me, that blanketty blank Ohare should have been shot way back when. Good old fashioned manners are sadly lacking in the youth of today.

  20. I am still here, still a little less since I was last critiqued for LOUD typing. I have been more concerned with an up and coming election here in Pasadena,Texas. Our mayor and city council are at odds over a major city charter change. Fundraisers to restore our vintage movie house the Capitan have been luke warm success. Another steaming issue before our city council is a super sports facility in a two city arrangement. In an aggreement with La Porte,Texas our share to start would be around 11 million and would be a start to fill up over 99 acres belonging to Pasadena.

  21. Jeebus=known trouble maker. nmainguy=known rabble rouser.

My great x? Grandfather on my Mom's side arrived from Switzerland in the early 18th century before the US was established as a soverign nation. Since then her side of the family has been so affected by other ethnicities and races that I might need to be called a Caucasian/Swiss/Italian/British/French/Cajun/Negro American. On the other hand, My Daddy's father jumped ship in Boston from Ireland with his little brother in the early era of the 20th century. After serving in WWI in defense of the U.S. as an illegal alien he returned home and married my French Canadian Mohawk Grandma.

BTW, I have to renew my passport. Should I list myself as a CSIBFCNICM American or just a Heinz 57 kind of guy?

My point here is that so many of us are indeed Heinz 57's. But we are first and formost citizens of the United States. Not America. Not Canada. Not France. Not Mexico. Not Texas. (though I've aways been pumped being a Texan B) )

Excellent point, main point not mentioned is that our imigrant ancesters felt it a matter of pride to learn the Main language of the United States while still retaining the roots of our heritage language. You know I have seen my hometown change drasticly in the past 10 years, and I am slow to change with it.

The silent army, was loud and clear last year with the marches on city halls all across America. History repeats it's self once more, civil rights right in our faces. gradule change I can adapt to, at my pace. I get angry with just about anybody who forces something to be, but if given time to get comfortable with it I am ok with change. I guess what i am saying is things are just changing to fast for me and I express my feelings incorrectly, my rants are spuratic poor judgement, due to an overload of emotions. Did I mention that I am old and cranky?

  22. I don't know what you're drinking over there in Pasadena but NO BODY is dictating that anyone be forced to learn any language. Feel free to rant with your free-style use of Caps all you like but be prepared to be called out when you make so many absurd statements.

Please feel free to point out that I over use capital letters while I type in this forum, you show all that you have a superior education. I feel the need to type what my heart compels me to do, so if my capitalization in type offends thee..... well you know?

I speak from personal experience here, I have been told many times that if I want to fit in to the future of Pasadena I should learn spanish, on one occasion in the early 90's I was chewed out in spanish by an elderly spanish gentleman , he felyt I was not embracing my spanish heritage because I did not speak to him in spanish. For one thing I am not hispanic, I am however part American Indian / Scotish & German. What other ethnic group in America has ever had an entire nation change policies, allowed so many birthright freedom through Amnesty, major companies advertising in another language other than English "nationwide". I do not speak so much with racism as much as so many think..... I am TEXAN old school if you wish to label me so. I was raised by a loving mother that indured so much hardship to raise 5 children without any government aid. Our family was all we had back then, to see so many folks that just stand in line for everything to be handed out to them rather than, like my mother got one,two or at times three jobs to raise her children. Anger comes to mind surely, but 5 children never wanted for anything, because Mom gave us healthy doses of love, respect and gentle words of scriptured Faith. In your everyday observations do you see children showing their parents the respect they should, and better yet do you get shown the repect your parents taught you to always show others. racism racism racism that word gets used alot, why not RESPECT of our differences, after all we all were made in Gods image, he just had a more diversified selection of colors in his box of crayons to design us with.
