  1. Kind of amazed to see someone remembers that it was a Holiday Inn.
  2. Tell me about it! I REALLY dislike the hybrid plan they have for this project. Either restore and repurpose the building as it was, or build something totally new.
  3. Just a note: It's Cullinan Hall, named for Nina J. Cullinan. With all the "Cullen" stuff in Houston it's an easy mistake to make. Disregard if autocorrect is to blame!
  4. You should have seen it in the early 80s! I knew several people who lived in the apartment building on McGowan at Milam in 1979. Talk about urban pioneering.
  5. It definitely doesn't help make anything easier that there's a giant blob of sunlit white on one side of the photo. Especially when that blob of white is an integral part of the photo. Quickie new version below. I don't know why, but this shot looks a lot better on my screen in Photoshop than on my screen on this website?
  6. I try to keep the "HDR" look to a minimum...I guess sometimes I don't succeed at that. Maybe I need to up the contrast a bit. I've already noticed, because of this discussion, that the original has some chromatic aberration (color fringing) that couldn't be removed on my iPad but can be removed on my Mac.
  7. I was thinking about that last night. What occurred to me is that the new Glassell plaza actually opens everything up even more. Before, the Noguchi garden was entirely closed off from view from the street. Now the garden will be open to view on two sides and be much more inviting.
  8. Actually, I'm interested in what it is you're seeing specifically when viewed on this site that looks overly compressed. Or maybe more specifically, what it would look like if it weren't overly compressed. ETA: Some of any weirdness may come from the fact that that image was post-processed using Photoshop Express on my iPad because i didn't have my Mac available at the time.
  9. Huh? The photo was actually shot raw. What is it you're seeing that you're calling "overly compressed?" Here's the photo straight off the camera memory card, converted from raw to non-compressed jpeg, with no changes whatsoever from how it was shot other than reducing the resolution from 300 pixels/inch to 72.
  10. I was skeptical when I first saw the renderings and model...even when I saw the first glass tubes going up. Now I CAN'T WAIT for this sucker to be finished.
  11. I really enjoy seeing your photos of this building, but you've just GOT to start holding your camera or phone level. It drives anal-retentive aspergers types like me CRAZY! 😜
  12. Shoot! If you're going to use the urban/suburban criteria there won't be anything left but about 5 disparate blocks in Midtown! 😄
  13. Not sure how much respect I'm actually due, but I find it hideous. Especially the truncated top. And it's made worse for me when I consider who Rice originally hired to design their opera house. We could have had something designed by the firm that designed these: ETA: I must say I've yet to see the building in person. I'm hoping it's the rendering itself that makes it so offensive to me. But I still think Rice lost an opportunity by taking the conservative route. IMO, Houston is in dire need of some new signature architecture.
