  1. Where else could they possibly run it? Elgin? Keep it on Wheeler and turn it north on Cullen?
  2. Certainly... which doesn't stop downtown residents like me from demanding more retail.
  3. Wouldn't regular fans work better? I can't imagine the misery of misty fans on a humid Houston summer evening.
  4. "Financial district" is a vague term. Downtown Chicago, i.e. the Loop, is quite busy on weekends due to retail on State Street as well as simply being the city's transport hub. However, most restaurants and retail shops in the office-heavy parts of downtown are closed during non-working hours. My favorite lunch break joint, the Wow Bao downstairs at the CBOT, closed at 6 M-F and stayed closed on weekends. Another factor seems to be architecture. The western part of downtown around Wacker Drive tend to be deader because the modernist architecture makes for deader street-scapes.
  5. Neiman Marcus ain't a department store, it's a place for average Joes to jerk off. Does the downtown Macy's make a profit at all? Sometimes I feel it's kept open because of the Foley's legacy.
  6. I agree. Besides, Austin's downtown is a totally different beast. Downtown Houston residential development is difficult because we don't have 80% of our nightlife crammed into downtown.
  7. I am contributing to downtown population. Could never stand Uptown. People go there to drink, and then have to drive home.
  8. Kids too. They're extra tender and juicy. I never cease to be amazed by the sight of kids running around in the fountain. In HOUSTON!
  9. Even I have a different opinion of Houston now, and I've lived here almost 20 years. Back then, downtown was hell and Midtown looked like Detroit. Main Street on the weekends was a zombie film backlot. The Wortham Center had already opened for a while, but Houston and urbanity hadn't reconciled their differences yet.
  10. There's still plenty of room west of 59. I'd rather they refurbish the post-apocalyptic city blocks west of Toyota Center first.
  11. The Lake House was busy all day. I was there from 1pm to 5pm and the cafe always had a number of people hanging around or buying food.
  12. I like him serious. It's completely true though. The northwest suburbs remind me of, God forbid, Dallas.
  13. That constitutes effort. Hermann Park is not a lunch-hour kind of place, especially considering its size and Houston's summer heat. Disco Green is one block from 5 Houston Center and its tunnel entrance. The Lakehouse should build itself into a popular weekday food joint.
  14. During summertime, weekday mornings and evenings could be good at Disco Green. One thing about Hermann Park is that it takes a great deal of conscious effort to go there -- a direct intent for recreation. Disco Green, on the other hand, is right down the street from office towers. Now, get a fitness place opened up on one of the adjacent blocks.
  15. Oh, that was my first post regarding the homeless. In any case, the homeless aren't a problem. What if there are drunk yuppies crawling around the boat pond?
  16. Unless they try to bathe in the fountains. That's my primary concern.
  17. For you folks that haven't clicked on the link yet... pictures! http://picasaweb.google.com/thedesirous/Di...DbhQk&pli=1
  18. You should've seen the trail at Memorial Park this morning. I couldn't even walk my bike. Discovery Green was amazing. I've never seen this many people lolling around in downtown Houston on a Sunday without a festival of some sort. PICTURES!
  19. Does anybody remember the bright, colorful lights when the Federal Reserve building first finished? Did neighborhood complaints make the bank shut them off?
  20. Slowing down to a crawl on a freeway is socially irresponsible; it causes huge traffic jams during rush hour. The price of excessive caution is public misery. Just because you can take the elevator to floor two doesn't mean you should.
  21. Oh, that ramp. Yes, it's bad. Never paid much attention to it though, always being on the through lanes or exiting northbound.
  22. That's because I-10 is not finished yet. Seven lanes (3 on I-10, 2 from 610N, 2 from 10S) merge down to... three! No surprise there. Wait until I-10 itself is completed; the ramp might not be so bad then.
