  1. 7PM, but I still agree. I live downtown and never use the tunnels. I've only spent money once at Houston Center, on an accounting manual from Waldenbooks. It's far enough from the Rice that I never find a reason to go there. Main Street has everything Houston Center has, except better -- oh, and a Macy's. When I do find myself heading in that general direction, it's to Discovery Green, and on a weekend.
  2. Gee, what high school did you go to? HISD isn't that bad.
  3. There's nothing wrong with the GRB's architecture. If reconstruction is the issue here, I'd rather have the Eastex trenched and renovate GRB's eastern facade to a human scale. Maybe have another park decked over the Eastex trench, like what Dallas is doing with their Woodall Rodgers freeway.
  4. Ha, that's a good one. Elevate an LRT line with a battalion of Uptown-style arches.
  5. Elevated tracks in Northeastern cities help add character, but they'd be horribly out of place in Houston. I've lived in Chicago; tell a Chicagoan to demolish their L and they'll be offended. It's all about the vibe.
  6. That's not true, simply because nowhere in Houston is "accessible" because no neighborhood is dense enough to provide Chicago-like ridership. Houston can easily cover major entertainment venues and employment centers, but residential areas are too spread out at the time being.
  7. IMO, only if one books tenants that otherwise would have went to the other tower. That's pretty hard to measure.
  8. Here's the one in Chicago: http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&...&iwloc=addr It's far busier than any Houston rail intersection, and it works just fine.
  9. Chicago has a few at-grade rail intersections, but they're grade-separated from road traffic. In the end it shouldn't be a big deal. Nobody wants to drive on Main St anyway.
  10. Don't worry, I'm holding up the uptight-coot youngster demographic in downtown. A big problem is people that would shop downtown don't even think of it. It's more than just about what time restaurants close. To break the vicious cycle, we need to make people realize they could come here instead of to the mall.
  11. It's "under study" all the way to Eastwood TC. I suppose making a left at Scott wouldn't be too hard -- they just have to rip up a whole block of houses.
  12. That is utterly nutcase. I don't think any apartment outside a quality, mixed-use development should rent for that much in Houston. I'd hope so, for the sake of sanity. Rents are rising all over. My beloved $820 1/1 at the Rice Hotel is going to get jacked up this November, and I'd have nowhere to run.
  13. $1,700 for what size? It's ridiculous how much these new projects are charging, and the popular meme is for all midrises to be marketed as luxury properties. At least Upper Kirby is a good location -- I never understood the big swath of midrises up on West Dallas, for instance. EDIT: I take that last part back. I forgot Regent Square is going up on West Dallas.
  14. I get the feeling that dotted segment showing a left turn onto Scott stands for "we don't know how the hell to do that." Anyhow, apparently Phase 3 development calls for the East End line to curve south from Magnolia TC and meeting the Southeast Line at Palm Center.
  15. I thought the University doesn't want the U-Line to dead-end in the stadium parking lot. They should run the line along the north side of campus on Elgin.
  16. Never too early to become conservative. Still better than me -- I think I was born uptight, if that's at all possible. Accessing MarqE is a huge pain in the ass. I'm familiar with the area and know all the roads that elude irregular visitors -- North Post Oak, the Katy Road exit, etc. For the less fortunate, it's a complete nightmare, especially those trying to access southbound 610. Probably the most navigationally perplexing development outside DT.
  17. They should've taken the opportunity to add more imaginary buildings then.
  18. I'll be frequenting HP to provide patronage. Gotta show the downtown pride! Hope we get a grocery store around here eventually; all we have is the Midtown Randall's. We're so far behind Dallas in the downtown grocery department. What I wonder is whether development will jump Westheimer. Kirby/Westheimer would become Houston's most impressive intersection if stuff goes up on all four corners.
  19. Ha! I didn't even notice. What the hell is that city in the background?
  20. No residential. Mixed-use is vastly better than single-use apartment complexes or strip malls. I'd rather have "cliched" mixed-use developments than hideous strip malls. Separation of uses for multifamily residential and retail is one of the most idiotic boondoggles I've yet to wrap my mind around.
  21. It looks like they're already digging up Harrisburg. I do a lot of shopping in the Harrisburg/Wayside area; that might have to change during construction.
  22. HP is two stories tall, like Sharpstown Mall. I'm a DT resident and would love to take pride in my pet tiddlywinks, but we have to be honest here. West Ave -- with its future expansions -- is the first of its kind in Houston.
  23. Alabama runs straight into the UH campus. Color me confused. I suppose they could condemn the corner lot at Alabama/Scott and run Metrorail through there.
