  1. Those are the sidewalk lights they've been installing around Uptown for the past year or two. They were clearly designed with aesthetics as the first priority, because I can tell you from walking around at night, they aren't very good at lighting the area.

I used to do my evening walks throughout that area and those lights do a good job of lighting the area and are more efficient as most of the light is reflected down rather than outward.

  2. how can anyone confuse this:

    with this:

    ?

and the "UH" in UHD is an asset to that school because UofH is widely viewed as a decent university so the association with it should be highlighted. i transfered from UH (central) to UHD after a semester...because UHD had far more evening classes and i like the fact that i still have 'university of houston' on my diploma. also have a masters from UHCL.

  3. you forget that a LARGE number of first time college students especially at a school like UHD DO NOT have any idea about colleges or universities and neither do their parents because many of them probably never went to college

having attended UH, UHD, and UHCL (got degrees from latter two) any confusion as to the ambiguity of these colleges is quickly dispelled during the application process.

I feel it is important for UH to become a top world university and having UH confused by even a few people with an open enrollment school will not aid that

if UH is has obstacles in becoming a top university, it will be because of it's own merits, not because of some open enrollment school with a similar name.

  4. i gradumagated from UHD in 2001 and i'd hate to seem them change the name. if you're looking into going to college or are a student, you should have no problem figuring out that UH and UHD are two separate entities. starting with the two very distinct logo's for each school, separate application process not too mention the lack of shasta or anything else referring to UH.

if they do change it, i'd rather have it have somewhat of a collegiate sounding name rather some PC contrived crap like "university of hopes and dreams"

  5. Slightly off topic, but I've always wondered with it's proximity to downtown, has UH-D considered building residential units to offer to their students?

becuase it's strictly a commuter school and caters more to an older crowd rather than the type who would need student housing.

as for the name, they should leave it alone. i'm a 2001 graduate and like the association with the university of houston system.

so far, the suggestion that i do like are:

    # City University of Houston

    # Houston University

    # Houston University of Science and the Arts

    # Milam University

    # Travis University

    # University of Arts & Technology - Houston

    as for these names, WTF?:

    # Bluebonnet University (no, not for an urban university)

    # Gulf Breeze State (a university or feminine products?)

    # Houston Opportunity University (not just no, but hell no)

    # Maverick University (mccain fanboys?)

    # University of Hopes & Dreams (why not name it barack obama university?)
