  1. Hopefully, this will lead to a debate that will offer a counter to this stupid Tea Party movement. Likely it will just fold into the typical political pissing match instead.

The real outrage shouldn't be there because some retired shuttle went to the "elite coasts." It should be there because our federal, state, and local governments are scaling back R&D money all across the board. It's space travel. It's health science. It's technology. It's infrastructure. It's teachers. It's the fact that we are retiring a shuttle with no real plan to try and accomplish something just as grand. That's simply un-American!

Our nation needs to WAKE UP. We can't rely on the private sector to want to fund things that aren't inherently profitable but are wildly important. I am tired of people piling on with their hatred of all things "government." That too should be un-American. Sure, it's fine to hate what we currently have because it flat out sucks and doesn't serve the interests of We The People, but that doesn't mean we should give up on government.

NASA is a perfect example of potentially GOOD government. There are others out there like our parks, public schools and universities, the NIH, PBS, etc... but all of these things are going to be threatened if we don't stop electing total buffoons to run things in D.C. and that includes members of both parties.

  2. South Station already exists. There's quite a bit of retail/restaurant space inside the old train station. The Hines proposal is really just for the "air rights" over the old station. That proposal has existed for years if not a decade by now. However, there are strict height restrictions in downtown Boston and the likelihood of the Hines project ever getting built as it is currently proposed is slim to none. It's a shame too, because Boston's financial district needs a monument tower.

  3. I am confused by this... I am assuming this will be the office tower portion of Redstone's mixed-use proposal? Or, has Redstone dumped their plans for hotel, condo, and office space and settled on just another boxy office tower with a large parking garage?

As for Skanska's project, I've heard that they've received very little interest in their proposal. While it's a highly visible location, I don't believe it has feeder access which is a killer for a freeway fronted tower...

  4. The Butler basketball team shot like a Y-League youth team.

What a terribly boring game with almost no energy in the crowd. It's amazing to think that UConn reached the Fiesta Bowl, Men's Final Four, and Women's Final Four because their fan support is terrible. Butler students outdrew UConn at a 3 to 1 pace despite UConn having 15,000 more students.

  5. Yep, totally different project than the original medical office tower.

With 1,275,000 square feet of office space, this thing would be HUGE. Seems VERY pie-in-the-sky to me but would love to see something like this happen someday. Just not sure this part of midtown could support it. The area around there is still kind of a no-man's land...

  6. And with the Bayou City Arts Festival at Memorial Park and the complete auto cluster F%&*# that is getting ready to happen, what a great time to dream about having an alternative option for getting to Memorial Park.

I live right near the Zoo these days and couldn't believe the traffic during Spring Break week. I walk the path almost daily and laughed as I watched some families sit in their cars literally not moving trying to navigate the area while others exited the train on Fannin and either walked to the Zoo or hopped on the kiddie train.

  7. I carry the insulated Central Market bag daily. It holds my keys, phone, wallet, gym clothes, etc... It also has enough room to throw in crap I pick up at the grocery or pharmacy too. The best thing it does though is convert to a tailgating cooler really easily. The shoulder straps make hauling beer/ice across distances much easier than a typical cooler.

  8. I was coming back from Project Row Houses yesterday by driving West along Alabama St back towards Montrose and noticed a rather large construction site on the North side of Alabama just to the West of the Spur/288/59 cluster. There are two large concrete cylinder forms (about 3 or 4 stories high) on-site and wood framing is starting to go up around them. I assume it's an apartment but hadn't heard anything about it... Anyone in the know? I didn't catch the side street it is fronting but it is the first North/South street just to the West of the highway cluster.

  9. The part about East Houston inside the Loop losing population is highly unlikely. Every census tract apparently showed a population decline. There's NO WAY that the area between UH/Maxwell House and Downtown LOST POPULATION over the course of the last decade. There have been thousands of housing units built on vacant lots and empty warehouses have been turned into numerous lofts.

  10. My interpretation of the OP's wording was that his/her's neighborhood folks are ignorant about the funding of the sculptures..

    DING DING DING

Sorry, but while I love the sculptures, nothing will inspire me to tolerate stupidity. People going off on AM Radio talking points (MY TAX MONEY WENT TO SUPPORT THOSE COMMIE SCULPTURES OVER ON ALLEN PARKWAY AND I AM MAD AS HELL) on a subject matter they clearly know nothing about shouldn't be tolerated.

  11. Ughhh, I can't wait until being a selfish idiot is frowned upon.

First off, the selfish part... Some of the best things in the nation are paid for and maintained by public money. Things like schools, universities, parks, roads, water service, air traffic control, medical and scientific research, space exploration, and yes, even the arts. All of these morons who talk out of the side of their collective asses are going to be super screwed when everything has a private cost. It's not going to be fun when there are no public schools, roads, or funding for research, the arts, or even the military (thank you, Blackwater).

Secondly, the idiot part. These new statues were PRIVATELY FUNDED.

I suggest a dumb tax. That would fix the budget shortfall asap.

  12. Actually, the Dynamo Stadium is located in the heart of her district.

Additionally, SJL is married to a U of Administrator who was instrumental in helping broker a deal between the Dynamo and Cougars for the use of Robertson Stadium these past few years.

But, he, when there's an angry mob of white folks who are mad at the uppity woman, then why bother looking at the facts?

  13. To counter an analogy that is inept, sickening and silly is difficult, but here goes:

What you've overlooked is that every one of the artist's paintings is entitled "Why I Do Not Molest and/or Kill Toddlers".

    Hilarious and true.

  14. Let's Go Eagles!

    For Boston, For Boston,

    We sing our proud refrain!

    For Boston, For Boston,

    Tis wisdom's earlthy fane.

    For here all are one

    And their hearts are true,

And the towers on the Heights

    Reach to Heaven's own blue.

    For Boston, For Boston,

    Till the echoes ring again!

    Let's Go Eagles!

  15. I live here. I could care less what the Embassy Suites looks like in Chamber of Commerce skyline shots. However, I do give a damn about it's street presence. It directly fronts one of the best public/private investments ever undertaken in this city but actually turns its back on the park.

The worst part of it all is that tax money was used to help build it. I think we've matured enough as a city to demand some sort of design review board for projects that seek tax dollars in order to get off the ground. The developer did things on the cheap to help HIS bottom line at the expense of the public. Quite frankly, there should be more anger about that fact; not less.

  16. The bad news for me is that I really want the Hogs to win tonight. I HATE Ohio State and the latest news coming out of Columbus about car dealerships and "loaner cars" to players like GMC Denalis is beyond dirty. When will the NCAA crack down on a big time, big ten program? The worst part about it all is how the Big Ten fans like to claim they run a clean conference.
