  1. Sounds awful to me. Didn't we fight a 30-year cold war against just this sort of thing? I'm starting to understand why I keep hearing the phrase "Soviet America."

If I'm not crossing a border and not in the act of committing a crime, the police should leave me the hell alone.

Well, I was refering that your status is checked when you run into the wrong side of the law (DUI, fighting, outstanding traffic warrent).

The thing is HOW would it be verified?

Will EVERYONE be checked? They'd have to be or else the ACLU and every minority community activist would be crawling all over this.

OTC: I have my birth certificate as well, but it isn't handy if you're sitting in a jail while the document is at home.

  2. I know this was discussed briefly on another topic, but this came up during a small drinking session with a few pals of mine.

    2 "latinos"

    4 "White guys"

    3 "White women"

The topic of enforcing and verifying citizenship was generally agreed upon.

Then I open my big mouth asking if they could prove it if they got randomly picked up on the street.

One guy commented that it was easy to prove it, I asked him how.

He responded because he was white and they wouldn't check him (A white hick we grown fond of).

When I asked what if they check EVERYONE. How could he prove it?

He had to think about that for a bit.

While the "mescans" had papers proving their citizenship or visas "at home", no one could think of a way to prove it if we found ourselves in the pokey for some idiot reason.

So the question is, provided they check EVERYONE, how can you prove your "immigration" or "citizenship" on the street or in Jail?

Would you also pass the sniff test of it was an unbiased check into your status?

  3. Taps House of Beer(The bar with the barrel entrance) was open last night. Just thought I'd pass it along.

I noticed it yesterday as well.

    yay. More parking (problems)!

Makes ya' wonder who would win in the parking wars that will eventually happen.

  4. Cyclone Anaya's?

I think a low priced mexican joint would do quite well. There are alread enough mid and higher end places to eat there.

If they want more variety or whatever, montrose is only a few blocks away.

  5. I dont disagree that it is safer to not talk on the phone, but I also think its much safer to talk on the phone than it is to have a passenger in the car...any passenger, any age, any level of driver. A person with their talking and body movements is much more distracting than a person on a hands free phone. Let alone a parent with a kid they are trying to get safely out of the car to school with all the things they are supposed to remember to take with them that day.

So I guess we should ban passengers in cars too...or better yet, force each individual passenger into a sound proof containers, so the driver is completely isolated from any distraction they may encounter. Banning a cell phone is that ridiculous.

And I am absolutely as safe as I think I am. I am a slow driver around town b/c I drive a big truck, which gets bad city fuel economy and cannot zip and weave, and cut through traffic even if I wanted too...I have not been pulled over, or received a ticket since I was 20 years, old - 9.5 years ago.

Doesnt matter anyway, I wont stop talking on the cell phone, same as the bad drivers wont stop speeding...its just a money grab.

ANY distraction in a car affects the way you drive.

When I have a passenger in the car, we just chill out to music, chit chat about nothing (i'm not that guy that has to LOOK at a person they're talking to), or they talk on THEIR phone (while I get annoyed).

Usually when I get a call while driving, I usually make it short, particularly if I'm on a city street. I might talk a bit longer on a freeway, but that involves someone I'm dating; and even then, that's why I spent the extra money for my bluetooth. I don't get the idiots that insist on putting the damned thing up against their head, limiting their vision.

I've gotten quite attached to just listening to music and having quiet time in my car, while I look out for the other idiots that weave in their lane or not paying attention to what they're doing.

  6. So on my 4th time to jury duty in my 8 years here (2 municipal including this time, 2 county never getting picked), I finally got on a jury. Wow. What an incredibly huge waste of everyone's time and a lot of taxpayer money. The experience did nothing but further my belief that most people are complete idiots and contribute nothing positive to the world. I can't believe that anyone thought it was a good idea for all of those people (jury, lawyers, witnesses, judge, etc.) to spend most of a day on that crap. If the idiots of the world could manage to not act like a bunch of middle schoolers and just be adults, well, then they wouldn't be who they are, would they.

    Amen.

The levels of stupidity that I see, makes me wonder if society is going to survive in a way so as not to be a real life version of "Idiocracy" in the future.

Edit: Corrected my stupidity in spelling. LOL.

  7. You can park along the Red Line and take it. Metro ride is free with a jury summons. But, I see now that you're talking about peeps that park there regularly. At least, this will kill another surface lot. Maybe that'll encourage 'them' to build another parking garage with fabulous 1st floor retail! on another surface lot?

When *I* had jury duty, I took full advantage of my free trip on metro to get there. I knew better than to screw around with that parking (except for that one time I slept late. Oops!). Would be an interesting stat to see how many people take advantage or are aware of it, though.

I hope they call the park "Justice" square since it's almost surrounded by courthouses.

    Maybe even "Zindler" Plaza?

Any word on what they're going to do with 1301 Franklin old Jail? If you consider a 30 yr old building old.

  8. I have a sneaking suspicion that this statement was not a complaint at all, but rather bragging that Houston is in such better shape than other cities. And, while I'd love me some free fed money to help balance the budget, they really shouldn't give stimulus money to cities that are not in distress.

Goes to show most of the whiners in the around town that COH *IS* in better shape than the rest of the country.

I agree that I would have loved to have some some cash come here to help with some of the IKE related costs, I hope Galveston got some that would take care of what FEMA deemed unworthy to pay for. Those DRB's.

  9. This is awesome news, of course, this is going to piss quite a few people off that need to park in that area, plus the construction is going to make the congestion there even worse.

At least I won't have jury duty again for a couple of years!

Are they still going to keep the old place open, or are they going to convert it for another use?

  10. Was inside today on a rare visit and noticed that they've removed most of the suspended ceiling panels:

    IMG_0180.jpg

The backhoes and bulldozers are also working overdrive at the old gas station site, as are the jackhammers on the parking lot and sidewalk immediately next door. It is definitely a construction zone.

    Pardon my ignorance on this;

While I understand that they need more office/storage space like any major company does, does this mean they are going to renovate/upgrade/expand the backstage area?

  11. I just wish they would put a fence around it until they figure out what they actually want to do with it. So I could let my dogs play! It would make a kick ass dog park.........walking distance of a lot of us dog walkers who don't trust their dogs enough to run free at balwin park.

Why not ask the city to turn it into a good sized portion for a dog park? I'm sure the dog walkers would certain appreciate it.

There is an "unofficial" dog park over at Taft and West Gray in the open field behind the school.

  12. I like your list, but they need to hold off on renaming for these folks until they die. And notable local businessmen should definitely make the list, whether they were considered personable or not. They don't need major thoroughfares named for them, though. Sakowitz Street is a good archetype from which guidelines ought to be set.

I forgot to add the "After they pass" statement at the end. Oops.

Forgot all about Sakowitz, and perhaps the Fingers.

Barbara Jordan definitely needs to have a street named after her, but I don't think it would be fair to single it out in a particular neighborhood.

  13. If and when it looks like Washington is going to become a collection of retail and eateries and some bars, sure.

Errrr, but I agree with other posters - right now it is mostly the latest hot spot for bars and clubs.

Besides, don't people who visit here want the museums, theater, MLB, NFL, NBA, symphony, Galleria, etc?? Not sure what Washington could offer that would draw tourism...?!

Most tourists are being pointed towards Midtown, The Village, Highlands, or Galleria. Washington isn't very much on their radar unless they spend about 2 weeks here.

As far as a parking situation, I still think if someone builds a big garage (with the first two levels of office/retail), they will make a killing! I'm sure a nice sliding scale rates for residents, daytime, and clubber clients should be implemented and still make money.

  14. I vastly prefer John Lomax's idea, and eagerly await the unveiling of Dr. Ed Young Avenue and Marvin Zindler Boulevard:

    http://blogs.houston...t_only_once.php

    I'm more along those lines;

The ones I'm more inclined whom I think MIGHT deserve a street are, in no particular order:

    Ron Stone

    Marvin Zindler

    Dave Ward

    Mayor White

    Mayor Lanier

    MAYBE Mattress Mac

    Barbara Jordan.

I'm sure there are a few Prominent People that need consideration Before Ghandi.

  15. In the first message of this thread, Kimberly described a View New Posts issue similar to the one you stated that you're having.

In the second message of this thread, I told her how to change her View New Content settings.

Then you came along and described an issue very similar to the one she stated. So I asked if you followed the solution I outlined for Kimberly. Or are you having a different problem?

I did it again, and apparently I forgot to save.

    Oops.

    Hopefully this will work.

  16. Did you change your "View New Content Method?"

I didn't think there WAS another method, unless you mean my switching from my phone to PC. Initially I thought that was the problem and it wasn't a big deal. But when it happened on my Laptop occasionally, it was an annoyance, but nothing to make me want to slit my throat over.

Do it the same way every time. I'm dull that way.
