  1. I don't shop at walmart because of how they have a tendency to push local business out of the way. While it's not noticeable in a larger city, it was quite blatant in some of the smaller towns I had visited.

For several years, I had a statement and a link in my signature as a sign of protest against that company.

A CEO's political views shouldn't be held against them, but I go for what they, as a company stand for.

I recently found out that Mattress Mac was a major sponsor to an Anti Abortion campaign which sharply goes against my views on the topic, but that doesn't keep me from supporting and endorsing his business.

Now if the company told it's employees that they're fired if they don't follow his line of thinking on the topic, THEN I'd howl in protest.

  2. I am currently rotating through the following for best breakfast:

    • Harry's
    • Katz'
    • Ziggy's Montrose
    • Le Peep
    • Baba Yega - Saturday Brunch (it's chepaer)

Is that Katz' as in Katz coffee? If so, where is it? I love their coffee when I've had it elsewhere.

Not the same "Kat's" and I have avoided them for years but, "One's a meal" that's now located across the street makes a pretty mean breakfast.

    Yumm....

Breakfast tacos. Damnit. Now I want some!

The only time I will get breakfast and McD's if there is no other option or craving a McGriddle. They're terrible for you, but ooooh...so good!

  3. Considering this is an Architecture forum, yes it is the most important historic event. I dare you to name something more significant than the revelation of the spectacle.

    Pearl harbor

    WWII

    1906 (03?) San Fransisco Earthquake

    1900 Galveston storm

    The McCarthyism era

    The End of WW2

    The Civil Rights movement

    The Kennedy assassination(s)

    The 60's-70's anti war movement

Those are some of what I would consider "significant", a few of them MORE significant, but not by much.

I think that we, as a nation, have a notoriously short memory when it comes to historical events.

An increasing number of people think we did NOT go to moon, we knew about Pearl Harbor before it happened, AND the 9/11 "truther" idiots that believe that it was all staged.

  4. like i said earlier, those that are unfamiliar are the problem, no explanation necessary. getting off of 59 onto fannin i still see people turning left on blodgett even though it has been one way, post light rail construction for years now. even downtown, 1-2x/month, i see cars going the wrong direction.

Go watch unfamiliar drivers in the Woodlands and get back to me. The trains simply are not the problem you wish them to be, no matter how many times you post a hyped up "problem".

Going down the wrong way on a street is not exclusive to downtown. I've back in the early 90s I was hit by people pulling out of of the kroger on 11th. Street onto shepherd and smacked into me.

I've seen it downtown, galleria, and downtown.

The thing is people don't know to read street signs or aren't paying attention.

    Hell, I've done it once.

  5. The skywalks? Maybe they could be redone into an elevated station. People could get off/on the train without ever going outdoors, which will work well for the lightweights who can't handle a little heat and humidity :)

    Wrong.

The skyways are multi level and some are done to transport patients to and from surgery and other procedures, and are basically off limits to the general public.

  6. You don't think it would look a little less awkward if, say, it ran along the street in that open space between the trees, rather than jutting straight out into the middle of the green lawn?

It doesn't look odd to me. I think they wanted the greenspace to be viewed by those walking along the Congress side instead of a solid wall for most of that block.

  7. Considering every property surrounding the park is owned by the County, I agree that it probably will not raise property values, nor would it matter in any way whatsoever, as the County is not interested in selling its courthouses.

    Agreed.

I just hope they allow some better quality street vendors to be there.

The hotdog stand that I got my eats was disappointing to say the least.

  8. Seems like they could have oriented the building to run parallel to Congress so it didn't jut SO far into the park. Kind of kills that space.

I disagree, while I would have liked a smaller surface footprint, the way it's oriented gives quite a bit of greenspace that is available to people coming from the criminal and civil courthouses.

  9. Very astute. A few minutes ago I discovered a function in the forum software which allows me to see who's been ranking whom over what. I checked on a couple of people who were unhappy with the system as it was, and I really think people would be very surprised if they knew who was voting them down and up.

Of course, if I released that sort of information it would be chaos around here, so I think I'll disable the function.

I would have that that feater was there somewhere, Ed.

Oh, I don't know. I think a riot would be kinda fun. I was too young to appreciate the moody park riots.

    BTW,

Giving myself a -3 to save some people some frustration. :)

  10. The problem wasn't so much that people couldn't handle having negative reputation so much as it was that some people abused the power to give negative reputation.

If that is the case, long term would have simply sorted itself out.

Rarely do I disagree with any decisions you make, since it is YOUR system, however I think this is one of those decisions that simply could have waited awhile longer.

That person would have eventually have found a new hobby or gotten himself banned (eventually).

  11. I haven't been there in a while, so I'm curious: how is the Klein area schools doing lately? I know Klein Forest is crap, but I've heard the rest of the district is starting to decline as well.

From what my kiddo said (class of 07), the drug problems were getting out of hand and the administrators and parents are in denial and think its just the "bad" kids who are the root of the problems.

  12. "Proving we're better than Dallas since 1836."

I think I'd flip it around...

"Houston, come for the food and stay for the people"

People actually come here to visit friends, otherwise they wouldn't even be here, and they eventually wind up liking the city overall.

  13. The Positive Interaction Program (with police) or PIP was held tonite for districts one (montrose) and district two (heights) all of the on going stats for crime are presented and discussed but the biggest gasp came when it

was reported heights homicide rate was up 900% yipes! last year there was only one homicide this year 10-- but the kicker is-- most of those were committed elsewhere and the bodies dumped in the heights-- overall crime in the heights is actually down slightly if you don't count the homicide number-- in montrose most of the crimes are down (homicide, rape, armed robbery etc) but home and car burglary are really up so the overall crime stat is up--

So, did everyone settle down after they were told they were only body dumpings and that the rate itself was inflated for that reason?

Nice title for you to alarm your neighbors with a nisleading title.

  14. Sounds to me that they don't want to fix things, and don't want to be bothered with the list of demands following an inspection. So they're saying, if you want to leave the house standing, it's your problem, not ours.

    I agree with that statement.

As old as the couple was, I'm sure home maintenance wasn't highest on their to-do list.
