  1. When I initially watched the report and looked at it overall, I seriously thought what the big fuss was about. It would be nice to have a park that close to the city where it can be accessed by people just hopping on a bus or walking from their downtown lofts, but to compare it to Central Park in NYC is like calling the neighborhood of montrose into a major metropolitan city. 2. Mayor Wants Central Park For Houston Construction Could Be Finished Within 3 Years POSTED: 5:33 pm CDT October 19, 2004 UPDATED: 5:43 pm CDT October 19, 2004 HOUSTON -- Houston will have its own version of New York's Central Park, if Mayor Bill White has his way, Local 2 reported Tuesday. The mayor outlined a proposal to purchase land in front of the George R. Brown Convention Center in downtown Houston and turn it into a 13-acre Central Park. "Most of the world's major cities have thought ahead and retained green space right in the heart of the city. And the city of Houston is doing the same," White said. "Today is an important day in our efforts to improve the quality of life for all citizens in Houston, Texas." The mayor said $35 million of donated private money and money earmarked for tourism would pay for the purchase. "No property taxes will be involved in building this park. We want to keep the green -- the trees, the grass, the natural background, but we're not going to be into amateur park designing at the mayor's office. We're going to get world-class professionals to assist us," White said. The long-term plan could ultimately include waterfront living along Buffalo Bayou. If city council approves the proposal, construction could be finished within three years. Copyright 2004 by Click2Houston.com. All rights reserved. 3. how about a synopsis of the video before we blindly click on a link?
  4. There are several reasons not to build at grade, and several advantages to going underground: First off, eventually the line towards the east side would service two lines (harrisburg and Scott) and the additional traffic on the line would totally be murder on the north-south traffic, especially when it crosses the main street line. Construction along the surface streets would also be even harder. One of the routes which makes the most sense has a considerable issue because there are alot of entrances to the loading docks and that would be a major no-no. Currently the Redline, during peak hours, has trains running every 6 minutes. The line from downtown's servicing sections will run every *3* minutes. An underground station would allow for "cross platform" stations. single stations that would serve multiple lines, and this would also help when it eventually expands to the west. The flooding is going to be the biggest challenge, this would have to be totally engineered to deal with an event that happens once every couple of years (to be honest). That's about as far as my taxed brain can handle at the moment... I'm sure someone else would help with my thought on this. Ricco
  5. Well, I'm sure they're not going to advertise that bit of info, guy. I wouldn't doubt if the area down below houses offices and storae areas for their walls and such. I was at the metro meeting with 2112 and I vouch with what he said. Ricco
  6. actually, I think one day it'll go away, depending on construction techniques. I wouldn't rule it out, but not in OUR lifetimes. Ricco
  7. Oh Good lord! You meant to say "Extra Innings" Right? Yeah, they should have won it, but the pitcher they had was totally useless. If it wasn't for Munro, WE would have won 0-4 and be in the series right now! I mean, good lord! Ricco
  8. now THAT would be a good idea, Westguy. Maybe we should pitch that before they start the actual design of the thing. "Hey Bill....we have an idea..." Sounds like a reasonable thing to do, considering. As the trees get taller and older, they will suck up more water, which will be handy in the rainy monsoon seasons. Ricco
  9. I have to disagree with you, Tex. Basketball fans are known to be a bit more "Enthusiastic" in thier celebrations over the years. Yet when we won the first world championship, it was rowdy, but there wasn't the violence that plagued many of the other cities around the nation. Then we won the 2nd one...and guess what? Nothing really happend aside from alot of Public Intoxication arrests. And we were talking about when the rockets were at the summit and the celebration took over a good sized portion of Richmond from the strip to almost 610, I believe. Baseball fans are generally more sedate (but just as rabid, so to speak) then other cities. While we generally celebrate the games, we don't go out of our way to be destructive. Ricco
  10. neither can I. I was in the room when someone who caught wind they had tickets called , and offered $8k for game 3 of the world series. Regardless if they made it or not.
  11. they're listing tonight after 9pm. just to let you know. R
  12. Well, keep an eye on this site if you're interested in tickets....they're going to go up on there either tonight or tomorrow night. www.ezbayer.com
  13. You poor guy. You're seeing the rhino in the room now, eh? Ricco
  14. Well, it's going to be fascinating to see how they're goin to do that. But when you think about it, it's actually a more effecient way of redoing the freeway. It will alllow the construction of a freeway w/ little disruption of the regular lanes! Ricco
  15. Damn. You beat me to it! I thought it was an excellent article, I'm looking for more information on the actual plans and drawings myself. Should be interesting, never figured they would be able to move the entire section of freeway like that w/o a major problem. Which looks like it would be, considering there are some bulidings that are probably going to go up in the near future. Ricco
  16. LA, The major difference between blockbuster and Netflix: Blockbuster won't do "adult" fare. Netflix does and will. From what I understand, netflix also has a wider selection. So the market will sort it out the darwinian way. Ricco
  17. Well, I can see his logic when it comes to CERTAIN kind of conferences and conventions.... but it's not the same thing with the boat, or the OTC conventions. Not even with the NRA or the antique shows. There is MUCH more than your typical conventions. He doesn't even touch upon THAT kind of business which has a tendency to go through houston once or twice a year! Ricco
  18. I got one question, though... Why were all those seats above the center outfield (above the resturaunt) empty? Ricco
  19. I'd have to agree with you. You'd think they would hide them in a more discrete way. I'm STILL curious to know what they're used for, though. Maybe we have secret unerground armies from the U.N. that are preparing their invasion of Houston and other cities with the same setup?
  20. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAND being able to show them Rocket and Pettitte to the Yanks fans and say, "See what WE GOT?? Money can't buy EVERYTHING." Ricco
  21. You know, traffic is going to be a total nightmare in that particular intersection, during AND after construction is complete. Ricco
  22. that's okay. I'd be happy with just being in the world series. There's always next year. Ricco
  23. I think several factors will come into play when it come to that... This year they already had record attendence on a "decent" record. Many give credit to The Rocket and Pettitte for that. IF, and I say IF, Beltran signs up, the attendence records will have to make a determination whether or not they will give him a fat check. It's just not the attendence, but all the cash that people spend at a park on avg. will make the major difference. I attended 30-40 games this year, as opposed to 10-20 games last year....so the numbers could bear that out, considering I spent ALOT of money on those overpriced beer. Ricco.
