  1. I usually take 59 South home, and the greenary is very welcome. However, I'm kind of torn about how wild it has gotten. It kind of represents our natural vegitation and how some of our bayous look like Vietnam. But I've noticed after the sun sets a couple of the lights have been out, and are starting to orange fog over. I'd imagine with some of the plants growing almost over the bulb that it would be hard to change them.

To be clear I like vegetation but the out of control look drives me crazy. It's my personality. Some people like the wild look but I like the clean cut look.

  2. Make sure the ground around your foundation does not dry out too much. This can cause the ground to contract and contribute to the foundation problems. It may not save your foundation, but it will help keep it from getting worse. You water it by putting a soaker hose close to the foundation.

This is so important with how hot and dry we get in the summer but almost nobody keeps their foundation wet.

  3. So this will replace Jack-in-the-Box?

Jack in the box is on shepherd. I think this will be replacing an old Spanish style lowrise office building a block south of Washington on Waugh. I could be wrong, but that lot seems large enough for this development. They boast uninstructed views, but the sterling bank building could be a problem there

  4. drove by the site today.. you are indeed correct. the entrances to the building are fenced off and boarded up with no trespassing signs. i didnt realize it was empty. i wonder if they are going to implode it or take it down slowly? hopefully the former, not just for the awesome show, but so Hines can get on with their work..

That's been fenced off and boarded up that way for a long time.

  5. I just don't understand the use of mega in the thread title. Yes, they say it'll have office, residential, hotel, and retail which could make for a pretty big project, but that doesn't mean it will be a "mega development"(if that means anything).

Add parking into the mixed-use mix, though, and it'll probably be pretty mega. :P

The truth is it'll probably not be anything other than a grand idea

  6. Anyone who knows the Exxon culture would find this story hard to believe, even at a much lower transplant cost. Exxon is run like a military organization, complete with ultra-redundency in their systems, and ultra-conservatism in their policies and actions. They refuse to put their name on sports arenas because they believe it is a waste of money. It is extremely unlikely that a $1 million tree transplant would be approved at this company...at least for the reason stated in the story. Exxon is not Enron. Never was. Never will be.

I have hard time believing they would approve the tree transplant to begin with.  But as someone who deals with Exxon a lot, if they do decide to go forward on a project, it will most definitely cost five times as much as a smaller/leaner organization could do it.  They are known for redundancy (over engineering) and gold-plating projects.  They are very large, and projects reflect that.

  7. I like the Texas culture and make no apologies. I hunt, like BBQ, and own a pair of boots. We have the largest rodeo and livestock show and its kind of awesome. If that embarrasses some of you, then not my problem. Maybe you shouldn't worry about what people in other towns think. Oftentimes the "enlightened" ones are the most narrow-minded anyway.

  8. I did it once. The flight was cheaper from HOU-IAH-CLE instead of direct IAH-CLE. It took about twenty minutes. This was about fifteen years ago. When I asked why they had the flight I was told something about logging hours but I'm not sure if that was right.

  9. Yeah, the comparison of Uptown in Dallas to the TMC is completely off. But uptown Dallas to midtown Houston is a much closer comparison.

In terms of actual residents , I think midtown Houston has just about caught up to uptown Dallas. What we're still a little lacking in is mixed use retail, or a more predictable pattern of retail throughout the area. We're still letting far too many developers come in and just build whatever they want. More is about to come on line, so that will help.

I'd say the two areas are about the same size now.

Midtown Houston vs uptown Dallas seem like odd comparisons

  10. Often youth think nothing can hurt them and that they are invincible.  That is why this contest was so important to Mayor.  The videos do an excellent job of depicting the dangers of texting and driving.  It is her hope that their messages will help convince their peers, as well as adults, to put the phone down while driving.  The Mayor reminds us that we all have to change our habits and refuse to put our own lives and the lives of others at risk.

Unfortunately I see grown adults texting on I-10 every day on the way to/from work.  I wish they made a device I could put in my kids cars that disabled text function and only allowed phone calls to certain people and emergency numbers.
