Wow that's awesome. I did some work here a few years ago. Sad to see it go but glad the plan is for mixed use.

I honestly believe downtown needs to bring in new forms of business. Oil has been the brand downtown but I'd like to see other types of business whether retail, real estate, etc set up shop in some of these buildings. Houston is definitely at a turning point for redefining itself.

Well IF the station is going to be built here, you can bet a developer is going to create some city centre environment for visitors. We should call it little dallass

No we need a connecting link between Downtown and Uptown and we're in business!

You can't cross over the rail line at this location and the blocks running parallel on either side aren't one way... so I don't see abandonment as a huge issue.
I almost feel like Metro should make a few of those medians fully paved over and easy to cross for pedestrians. I mean you already have to cross the tracks to get across the street or get on a station platform.

skwatra is right. I've seen people drive from the North side to the South side just to shop. Seriously. When I lived on Elmen I used to walk to the River Oaks Theater but that was in the 90s and there was also a theater at West Gray @ Waugh. Saw Mars Attacks there after a bowl. Never laughed so hard in my life.
A bowl of cereal? Lol

I'm really looking forward to having decent sidewalks along Post Oak. Hopefully, Westheimer and San Felipe east of 610 will also be improved.
Of course, there will still be the Russian Roulette of walking under 610 to get there ...
There has to be a way pedestrians can cross without worry. Maybe if all of our highways had some sort of bridge? Idk

No... you need greenspace throughout each neighborhood... if I live in Midtown (which I do) then having to travel downtown just to go to the park is too far... plus new greenspace increases land value for the immediate area... there is no redundancy in creating quality development

I feel like this development is going to become a Rice Village shopping area over time

I went back and looked at TxDOT's "plan" and this whole idea would cripple the city for a nice long while. It would widen, not close the gap between the East End and Downtown. The Pierce Elevated would be demolished last and it is such a small segment compared to the hell many people, businesses, neighborhoods, etc, would have to go through before anything clears up. And even when it clears up, what have you accomplished??? This would be an absolute disaster for just a small section of covered freeway and a small section of the Pierce elevated demolished in return. Why not make access under 59 more inviting!? Do something with the space provided under the freeway! Double decker 45 and 59 like in other cities! So in summary, TxDOT is going to turn a crap load of dirt for people who can't find another way to get to work other than their cars!? Like give me a break. Those of us who live in the city have to cater to everyone else. I get around just fine on my feet.

Had too much at Noveau Antique? You're in luck!
Seriously I don't understand how the east side of Midtown keeps getting this stuff.
This is actually a good development for the neighborhood. The reason the east side get's "this stuff" is because the majority of that side of the neighborhood is families. Now within that 3 to 4 block radius you have a dentist, a nice park, etc. IMO a development like this is better for the quality of life. In much the same way the new Crime Stoppers building serves a similar purpose.

Are you suggesting foul play? Last article I can find (from fall 2015) still says HFD was investigating. This is the one with a welder on the roof and high winds right?
Never heard the outcome, but early reports indicated it was an accident. There were people complaining about building near the cemetery but there will always be some group complaining about something with a development this big.
It would be interesting to see what came of the HFD report and subsequent dealing with insurance.
I wouldn't doubt it in this case.

Yeah but every city enforces a degree of development it feels is needed for an area to have future potential growth. This is basically what the city is starting to enforce. They want to build out Midtown quickly but with lots of options for more retail in the future.

From what I remember, this development was going to be built next to a cemetery. Basically the back porch of a few of the units would have been within a few feet of tombstones. People were upset but the develop kept going. Then the building burned down.

Think about if the developer had just listened to what the people wanted.

According to the Business Journal, they are closing 9 and opening 6 from what I read. I'm assuming 1 of the 6 is the new Midtown location.
