I think nothing short of Haussmann's Renovation of Paris will please the Thomas the train crowd. And why not when they hold the belief that their public transport plans trump private property rights.

The last time Jeeves left my clubs at Gus Wortham (public course) they ended up being used by the homeless to tenderize their squirrel meat.

Yeah, but if you quiz him on her he'll tell you she writes books about trains.

None of which are luxurious as they are after all public transit. lux·u·ry - a material object, service, etc., conducive to sumptuous living, usually a delicacy, elegance, or refinement of living rather than a necessity. On a crisp fall morning I awake eager to hit the greens. I step into my garage and cast a glance at my DB5, Miura, Ghibli, 3.0CSL, and 600 Pullmen. Finding these to be rather unremarkable my butler grabs my golf bag and I trek 3 blocks to the closest Metro stop to wait for my bus to arrive and open its opulent door to me.

I challenge you to stop by that area at 6:30am on a Saturday to breathe the air of luxury.
  6. I think your point would be more convincing if you had a cartoon mascot of sorts. Branding, it's all about branding. You want kids to be traumatized when mommy wants to go to Walmart for $1 Lunchables.

The Paris Metro is excellent, the Tube in London is excellent, but they're not luxurious. I'll consider it luxury when my train car seats 4, smells like an English saddle shop, and accommodates my ever-changing schedule.

So you're telling me my bus drivers name is Jeeves and that smell is Connolly leather not butt-odor? Luxury and choice? To describe public transit? Are you mad?

The automobile is the ultimate expression of one's autonomy. With my automobile I can come and go as I please. I set my own schedule, I don't fit my life around Metro's schedule. While traffic may impact me, I can *choose* what time I leave or what route I can take. The automobile has always been about freedom and autonomy which has never set well with authority, be it parental or governmental.
  11. If green is all that matters Kudzu will get you there.
  12. The I45 tunnel idea is an old one. I found an old, (seemingly) pro-tunnel interview with one of the tunnel advocates. http://www.downtownhouston.com/live/qol/I45_Tunnel.php The question is what prevents this from becoming a gigantic cost-overrun like Boston's Big Dig, and how do you deal with future expansion? (re-build the future expansion freeway on the reclaimed greenspace?) I'm not against it per say as I can only wonder what it will sound like when I (eventually) run my Maserati cabrio through it at speeds that will remain unmentionable. Oh, and when someone says they will consider it....

Hempstead Smokehouse - BBQ & novelty gifts. Next exit 420ft.

I think Hempstead should target these same patrons with a campaign touting that there is "plenty of Hemp in Hempstead."

While the Hempsteads are becoming the norm there is always the odd Marfa example that finds a way to survive or emerge from obscurity despite being off the beaten path.
  16. My first guess is that they were from someone's sweet 16 birthday party.
  17. A Catalina Coffee in Midtown would be nice, but I'm not sure how their "slow pour" would work in the drive-through line. However a drive-through beignet place near downtown would be nice.
  18. Having made a few trips to the Woodlands location I would recommend you do just that. I think the pent up demand will make it a mad-house for the first few weeks. The good news is that according to my friends in Chicago, Whole Foods made their pricing more competitive when a Trader Joes opened up nearby their house. Red is correct about their wine prices. It's almost impossible to beat Spec's wine quality, selection and prices, though we did find a nice German red at TJ's. (Name escapes me at the moment) I'm not impressed with the "2buck" chuck unless you're pairing it with Asprin.
  19. The 380 was the winner of the anti-Walmart straw poll, so they made that their primary issue. What I don't understand is if all the critics buy "local" only why should would they care about a business that's more than a mile or two away?
  20. Loved that place! They had the best bagels in Houston.(at the time) I recall the owner stating that it took 2 years to break even and the final nail was a pizza place opening up right after they started serving pizza. The other place I miss is Kolache Kafe. Best Kolaches ever. Still have not found a place that serves a better Kolache.
  21. Washington Avenue and Midtown are in serious danger of the West Nile threat as their uninformed continue to believe that Grey Goose Vodka Tonics (diet tonic at that) are adequate protection against WN. To make matters even worse there have been reported sightings of dead Popov bottles in Washington area parking lots, symbolic of the panic and misinformation that is being spread. The example below is being transported to Spec's Center for Inebriation Studies for gas-chromotology testing to determine if it is indeed a carrier.
  22. Bombay Sapphire is only effective on the East Nile Virus.
  23. Time to stock up on Schweppes Tonic Water.... just in case.
  24. Ah, the old living wage argument. It's not about the wage, it's about how a person chooses to live.
  25. Get a job as the nightshift manager, they always have keys.
