  1. The University of Houston System has a total enrollment of over 56,000 students. What a lot of people don't realize (as was mentioned earlier) is that each campus is a separate university, same relationship as UTEP or UT-Pan Am has to UT-Austin, or TAMU-Corpus Christi or TAMU-Galveston has to TAMU-College Station.

University of Houston - over 35,000 students (most ethnically diverse research university in the US, by the way); only doctoral program in the UH System.

    UH-Downtown - 11,500 students; offers bachelors/graduate programs

    UH-Clear Lake - 7,600 students; offers bachelors/graduate/Master's programs

UH-Victoria - 2,500 students; offers bachelors and graduate programs

So, to answer your original question, there are about 53,500 UH students from all UH System schools in Houston, excluding UH-Victoria.

What about the Cinco Ranch and University Center at the Woodlands? What are their populations?

  2. Darn tootin'.

Last weekend a fellow HAIFer and I were talking with a demolition worker at the Penn Hotel. He asked where the closest place was to get a bite to eat (at 12:30am on a Sunday morning). And even though we're both chock full of HAIFiness, neither of us could come up with a good answer. (uh...House of Pies on Kirby?)

Too bad the Deco Diner didn't live up to its original concept. You'd think that there would be a market for a all-night breakfast place in the heart of downtown - a lot of people come out of those nightclubs hungry.

I say who ever has the money and the smarts to open a Waffle House in the Montrose, Downtown, Midtown, Rice Military and all over inside the 610. They would make bank!

There is always IHOP. there is one on the I-10 off Washington, there is one in the Gulfgate, and there is one near Kirby and the 59.

  3. It won't be online yet, but the Houston Business Journal says that Morton's Steaks is opening a second Houston location downtown in the 1001 McKinney building. The new location will have the new "Morton's Bar 12-21" concept, which is "a special bar bites menu" that "allows for more dining in the bar area."

That is good news! But an Outback would be cooler!

  4. I agree. I think UH's Central Campus will benefit in the long run from this move. It will improve the image as well as the profile of the students entering the school, and therefore it will increase the value of our degrees. If full-time student enrollment increases, it would follow that campus life would benefit, which is good for the city and just good all around for UH.

I imagine that College World Series, Final Fours and BCS Championships won't be far behind! :D;):mellow::o:(:wacko:

You are right about the negative perception but only one thing. The University of Houston and The University of Houston Downtown are two separate entities. UH Downtown is part of the UH system, but in no way is it the same school. Their partner ship is one of convenience, meaning that they merge there utilities only when it is convenient. They both have different mascots UH has a Cougar and UHD has a Gator. As a student at UHD you can not take classes at UH Central with out first applying, and then registering, and so on.

  5. Montrose is getting an American Apparel store. Check out 002mag.com to see it. This months issue talks about the the Shops at Houston Center getting a Green makeover, and how the Pavilion on Post Oak is about to anounce plans for the new urban center that will go up in its place.

is this American Apparel in addition too the one going up on main near the Pavilions

  6. That may be so, but in the mornings and daytime it is crawling with college age kids. Most look to be part-timers and stay-at-home types, so maybe dorms are not needed for them either.

I go to UHD. About a year ago I had a conversation with one of the administrators for the school. It escapes me what his title was, but anyhow, he said that they are heavily recruiting freshmen students from local high schools. They want to become a more traditional four year University with dorms and all that "jazz." His word not mine.

UHD started as a trade school, for the purposes of providing companies in the CBD a reasonably close alternative for continuing education for their employees.

  8. Today is the Big Day; but, I am not holding my breath!!

You Know me too! I am not holding my breath anymore! I have been very positive so far, but now if this going to happen they just need to come out with it and say it to the public with bigg letters:

"THESE ARE THE STORES WE WILL HAVE AT THIS LOCATION. WE ARE STARTING CONSTRUCTION ON THIS DAY. WE WILL BE FINISHED ON THIS DAY."

So far reading this thread and the news papers has been as revealing as watching and episode of LOST or 24.

  9. Part of the reason why I like the METRORail is because it will make owning a car less mandatory (If that's the right way to say it) in Houston.

Even if Metro completed its plan for mobility today. One would still need you car for somethings. This city is too spread out and developers find it difficult to think urban when it comes to new developments.

  10. eelimon...

thanks for the pics and suggestions... but I don't think any of them would work save for the 2 locations near the Toyota center... the others are either too small and don't allow for parking, or like the one for MMP you'd be eliminating ALL of the parking for season ticket holders to MMP... I doubt Drayton would go for that...

whatever happened to the suggestion of razing Delmar stadium and rebuilding it for the MLS team and HISD?? personally I think that is the best bet of all... it is very near many hispanic communities.. is in an area served by Metro transit.. and it would further serve to revitalize that area along with the new HISD headquarters..

What do you think of these locations on the nothside of Downtown:
