What's been the best (most memorable) concert you ever attended in Houston?

Recommended Posts

When and where did it take place?

One of the most memorable concerts that I've ever attended was:

1996 U2 Pop Mart Tour in the Houston Astrodome.

SO many to choose from, but I had a blast at the Monster of Rock show at Rice Stadium back in 1988ish.

Lineup in order of appearance:

Kingdom Come

Dokken

Metallica

Scorpions

Van Halen

It was awesome (except for Kingdom Come who sucked :( ).

Best show ever for me Roling Stones in Prague circa July 1995. It was outdoors in an old stadium. Estimates were that 120,000 people were there. I would not know as I was about 30 feet from the stage in a sea of people. It was a once in a lifetime deal for me. Too many people. I have seen the Stones in Houston on 2 other occasions and neither show was even that good. In fact the show last December was downright boring (and way overpriced). Never again will I see the Stones live.

Best concert that I ever attended was the Hall & Oats and I think Chicago at the Cynthia Woods Pavillion. There were about 12 of us, all on the hill, sitting on a large (30' x 30') blue tarp. It started to rain pretty hard, so we got up, lifted the tarp and stood underneath. As soon as others on the hill saw this, they too ran under our tarp. Well, they couldn't stay under our tarp for free, so we made them hold the tarp up and buy us beer. We all charged up the hill, under the big blue tarp, to the beer stand. It was quite the sight. :D

Second best was the Billy Joel and Elton John at Rice Stadium in 1995. Besides BJ and EJ putting on one helluva performance, there was a lightening show going on behind the stage.

My freinds and I sitting 4th row at The Summit, for the Run/DMC and Beastie Boys Tour in 1987. A couple of my friends got up on stage with The Beastie Boys to dance with these girls they had in cages, like go-go dancers. We got totally polluted, and I still don't know who drove us home, when it was MY car that we took.

Willie Nelson back in 2001 at Cynthia Woods was pretty good also. Saw Kenny Chesney before he was "KENNY CHESNEY". My wife is the biggest Willie Nelson fan ever, so she was just lit up like a Christmas Tree, and my wife swears that's the night our first child was concieved, SO, yeah, it was a pretty good night for both of us I guess.

Some good ones:

Pearl Jam/Smashing Pumpkins/Red Hot Chili Peppers at the Unicorn - 1991...my first concert; I had been a big Chili Peppers fan for years, but never heard of Pearl Jam or Smashing Pumpkins (they hadn't hit it big yet)...I got to grab Eddie Vedder's balls as he crowd-surfed to the back of the Unicorn (accidently, of course, as I reached up to help support him...I don't think he appreciated my support! :P )

Mr. Bungle at the Vatican 1992 - memorable because the band came out and stood statue-like, in complete silence, for about 30 minutes before starting the show. It was a near-riot while we were waiting. After a handful of songs, the show ended when Mike Patton, while swinging the mike stand round and round, hit a bouncer in the back of the head. Said bouncer got up and shoved Mike Patton down...show over.

1992 Perpetual Park Party at UH (fIREHOSE (headlining, moved to Local's due to rain), King Missile, Billy Goat)

1993 Perpetual Park Party at UH (featuring Rev. Horton Heat, L7, Bad Livers...that's the one where Snow got his ass beat by the crowd for lip syncing...unfortunately it was also the last Park Party. :( )

Reverend Horton Heat/Porno for Pyros at the Lone Star Amphitheater - 1993?

Phish at the Tower Theater - 1994

Femi Kuti at the 2001 International Festival

Kila at the 2001 International Festival

Any Linus Pauling show at Rudz :P

Sounds like one of those "I'll never wash this hand again !" kind of moments. Like when Marsha got kissed by Desi Arnez Jr. Dreamy !

Where are all the old farts on this topic? Most of these bands I'm reading about are BABIES!!!!

I saw Paul Simon at the Cynthia deep-Woods-off Pavillion with a lightening show behind the stage. I think it was his Graceland Tour. Killer.

Moody Blues (same venue) with the Houston Symphony. Wonderful.

Little Feat at Rockefellers .......... one long featgasm.

Leonard Skinnard at the Pavillion. We were up on the front row against the stage. Man, it was hot down there in August. Not to mention loud. That was in '96.

YES. Cosmic. Those guys are getting up there in years, but they still have it.

How 'bout the WORST concert? Stevie Nicks at the Summit. Tedious. The Association at Rockefellers. Some people should just stay home and be remembered for who they were.

I almost forgot. Thanks to our fans and fellow HAIFers, my band Stride was the first local band ever to play the Toyota Center last March. That had to be one of the best shows I've attended for obvious reasons. Playing in front of 20,000 people certainly doesn't suck.

That's right ! I forgot about that, man, congrats on that. What a wonderful memory to have. Where are you guys playing next Gary. I think a HAIF mixer at a Stride GIG would be good.

Oh man, it was great! The catering was unbelievable, the dressing rooms were sick, and the whole backstage area was gigantic. We hung out with Bon Jovi for a while (nice guys) and then went on stage to a HELL of a lot of people. Oh, and the light show was fantastic.

The only downside to the evening was when I put some damp jeans in a dryer backstage. Unfortunately it happened to be Jon Bon Jovi's personal dryer and I got yelled at by his tour manager. I won't tell you what he had in that thing as I might get sued (g-strings, g-strings, g-strings).

We've played to large crowds before (5-8 thousand), but this was the super big time.

As far as playing for the next HAIF mixer...Actually were working on the 3rd album right now, so not much happening on the live front. We've been playing live all over the country for the last three years, so we needed a break. I do know a lot of people locally though, so we could all come to an agreement for the band we wanted, and I could make a couple of calls.

Heh, I'll just get you plastered and we will all just happen to be at an "open mic night".

Seeing them was about all you could do back then. Most of the concerts were so loud from screaming fans that you couldn't hear the music.

My first "concert" was seeing Cab Calloway and the Everly Brothers at the 1956 Houston Auto Show.

My other concerts include The Byrds, the Ariplane, and Eric Burdon twice, once with Animals, once with War (I think). I attended the Black Oak Arkansas/Grand Funk concert, but it was so damned loud that I couldn't even tell what songs they were playing. It suk'd.
