WOW. I really like your style man. Photography is my main hobby also, but I am strictly an amateur and have only done it for only a year. I would love to see more from you and now I have a new favorite Houston site. :)

Here are a few of my own, if you do not mind.

Great pics. Hopefully you will be able to post a similar one to this in the next few days.

:)

Great pics as well, Gulf. I've seen your work before. I had one of your Gulf Building photos on my desktop for a couple of months. It was a great shot to wake up to.

Very nice photos, are these all from 2004?

Shamrock. :( WHY!?

Yeah, most of these were from 2004. This year I've mostly focused on doing portraiture and street/people photography... not alot of architectural work.

I think I might start doing a TMC Photobook. It changes so rapidly, and I don't think it's being adequately photodocumented.

Nice :) They all have a very retro feel to them. I like the soft-focus and restrained use of color. I tend to either go black and white or ULTRA HIGH saturation/contrast. I like BOLD colors

I'm an amateur too, but I've been doing it for about 3.5 years, with incremental increases in equipment, until, like nowadays, I spend all my money on kit. My day job is as a PhD student at Baylor College of Medicine in structural/computational biology.

I went back to my 'older' archives and picked out a few more to share.

These are all from 2003/2004.

Thanks. I love that building. The skyline would not be the same with some of those pre WWII towers. Here is one pic I took from the penthouse at Hotel Icon.

I used my magic carpet :D

Actually, I set the self-timer and extended my tripod as long as I possibly could. I then lifted it as high as I could from the very base (so it was maybe 12 or 13 feet up) and used a structure they'd placed on the street to help stabilize the tripod. It took about 10 tries to get the correct angle and exposure without any camera shake.

Now that's dedication! What do you shoot with?

Very enjoyable, Ian. We need someone like you to capture and expose the various unseen facets of this city to the rest of the world. I also agree that the Med Center is changing and, while appreciated by most of us, is sort of taken for granted and under-photographed, at least I haven't seen many. How many cities in the world have a distinct area with it's own skyline purely as a medical center? Maybe there are some that I just don't know about.

Don't know, but honestly, I prefer the TMC to downtown. Ironically, the TMC is much more pleasant to walk in, imho, and you definitely see more people on the street/sidewalks than DT. The architecture is alot less "brutal." And, along Fannin, there's a couple blocks lined with small restaurants with patios, which is really nice to walk along during lunchtime. Whereas parts of downtown definitely have the "decayed" feel to them, you never feel that the TMC is anything but safe, clean, well-kept, and modern.

I just wish there was more mixed-use development in the TMC area. Of course, I understand that the land on the TMC campus is 100% institutionally owned, so this is impossible, and land in the adjacent areas is either astronomically expensive, owned by Rice, owned by TMC members, or part of Hermann Park. I'd like to see more outlying condo/apt towers on the immediate edges of the TMC.. Parklane/Warwick/Mosaic is nice, yeah, but I'd like to see taller/higher density just south of Holcombe like the Spires, and West of Fannin/South of University.

It's tempting to choose to do my thesis work in a lab on the North side of Alkek Tower at BCM just because it has an AMAZING view of downtown :)

Anyway, in the future, I plan on livening up the TMC forum on this board.

looks like what used to be the bender hotel (later called the san jacinto hotel)

Not sure what it WAS, but the lot is still EXACTLY the same as this -- completely covered in rubble -- nearly 11 months after I took that photograph. It's right in the core of DT.

Gulf:

Do you realize in that picture, you have possibly captured 3 centuries of Houston architecture? The Chronicle Building on the right is actually 2 buildings covered with that crappy marble and glass. I believe at least one of the buildings under that is from the 19th century but may have been the early 20th. Of course the Gulf Building is 20th century and 1000 Main is 21st century.

Nice. Makes me want to drop out and come work for you :) I don't suppose you're looking for more stock photos?

Always. I post them on web sites like Houston Architecture Info and Tokyo Architecture Info and others I own. In exchange, you get a link to your web site where you can make the sale. Or, I can make the sale for you and you get half.

This is such a great pic!

Could some one fill me in on The Main Event? I have heard about it, but was not sure how successful it was.

Is this picture a typical shot of the crowd? or is it more of a special event?

Regardless, I think it is great that the Main Street corridor has such a new found energy.

These are some of the best pictures I've ever seen. You should post them on Skyscraper City, like most of your other photos.

I really enjoy looking at them, thank you so much for posting them. When it comes to Night Shots, I can't do it. But you really know what your doing. Please post more, these are Fantastic!! :)
