Well at least, I think it's a natural gas station (for filling up your car... on natural gas). Built at the intersection of McCue and Guilford. Photo below. Kind of cool. Kind of a goofy spot, though I know that's where their office space is. http://i1241.photobucket.com/albums/gg515/SkylineView/ApacheGas_zps5072899d.jpg

Greetings - I work at The Awty International School, which was founded in 1956 by Mrs. Katherine Awty. At that time, the school was in a small house located at 3736 Westheimer (where Frank's Chop House is now - just east of the intersection with Wesleyen). Sadly, over the years, no photographs of this house have been saved. I have been tasked with finding such a photo. Whew! So I thought I would come to the experts in Houston buildings and old photos. I would appreciate any help or suggestions. And if someone just happens to have a picture from back then, well, that's what we call a miracle, folks. :-) Thanks in advance for letting me pick your brilliant and Houston-centric trivia filled brains! - Carol Nash

I found this project after looking through Emporis located at http://www.emporis.com/en/wm/bu/?id=faulkn...-houston-tx-usa Found it in a bizjournal article also.. http://houston.bizjournals.com/houston/sto.../08/story2.html In addition, a limited liability company connected to Austin-based FaulknerUSA Inc. has taken title from Joseph DeBakey to a three-acre tract next to the 31-story Dominion apartment tower, near the Galleria Mall. The 2525 McCue site is home to the 43-year-old Marquee Apartments, which are currently being torn down. No renderings anywhere.. This might be listed under a differnt name, but if it is atleast somebody can update Emporis. If this is posted somewhere else plz move thanks =) Thanks, c4smok

per next weeks planning commission agenda, there is a public hearing for "Mcdonalds Richmond and Fountainview." Address is 6000 Richmond. Their map shows the property in consideration is the entire space to the east Dave and Busters. Does a Mcdonalds really need that much room? There is a Mcdonalds to the east on Richmond less than 1/4 mile away and it takes up half the space. Could they just be replacing the one that's there or is "Mcdonalds" code for something? With another apartment development going up just down the road, this might be a long shot to be another apartment building.

How would I find out who all lived in the house I grew up in? It was built in 1960 and we moved in in 1982. HCAD only has records back to 1988. Where should I look for this info? Thanks!!

This occured during my senior year at Robt. E. Lee and my memories are a little sketchy. I'd welcome anyone elses memories of this event. The riots occured in October of '75 in the parking field across from the school on Beverlyhill St.. The field was a drug market where students gathered as early as an hour before school to party. HPD undercover narcotics officers had been "staking out" the field for several weeks since school had started that September. They also placed several undercover (dressed up to look like school students) in the field to purchase drugs--which they did. Several drug busts were made that October in the field including one bust of a 16 year old boy selling pezz candy LSD. After one of the busts several students began to attack one of the police cars. It had it's windows broken by rocks, etc. Several arrests of students were made. Ultimately the drug busts succeeded in stopping the drug use and selling in the empty dirt lot parking field. The field is now part of the parking lot for Pappasitos Mexican Restaurant on Richmond.

The Galleria Mall At 5085 Westheimer Rd.
editor replied to TreaderCRC's topic in Uptown and Galleria Area
I didn't see this mentioned earlier, so I thought I'd note it here. GeekWire says it's confirmed that a Microsoft Store will open at the Galleria. But a date hasn't been pinned down yet: http://www.geekwire.com/2011/microsofts-retail-chain-eleven-stores I've been to the Microsoft's newest "flagship" store in Bellevue, Washington a few times. The criticism that Microsoft gets most often with these stores is that they are a copy of Apple Stores. I can say that is true. Everything from the signage, to the store design, to the furniture, and how things are laid out is pretty much the same as an Apple Store. I do, however, get the sense that the Microsoft Stores are more cluttered. That's probably due in large part to the fact that Apple only sells six main products in its stores: Macs, iMacs, MacBooks, iPods, iPads, and iPhones. Software is being pulled from Apple Stores, since it all comes from the App Store now. Printers are coming off the sales floor, and being kept in the back room to remain available on request. Microsoft, on the other hand, tries to showcase as much of the universe of products that run Microsoft software as possible, including PCs, tablets, laptops, Surface tables, Xbox, Phone 7, etc... etc... The clutter and chaos that I always had to deal with may have something to do with the fact that the MS store I was in was adjacent to a Microsoft office tower, five blocks from three others, and a 10 minute drive from headquarters. Still, when I decided I didn't want to pay $35 for a multi-card reader at the mall's photo store, I checked out the Microsoft Store thinking it would have far more accessories than the Apple Store. I went through three of their salespeople before someone finally understood what I was looking for. Everyone else kept trying to sell me a USB thumb drive. In the end, it turned out that the MS Store didn't have multi-card readers at all. I ended up getting one at Bartell's Drugs for $10. I never checked the Apple Store. -
I spotted 4603 Ivanhoe St: http://search.har.com/engine/4603-Ivanhoe-St-Houston-TX-77027_HAR87835783.htm They've updated it - doesnt look all MCM in style but certainly looks intriguing. What do you think? I hope to go see it this week... Bryan

I asked this question because the two jewelry stores at that location never lasted. Robbins Brothers and Spence Diamonds both closed (saw the Spence signs taken down). Why? Is it the economy? The Location? Are fewer people getting married? Or something else?

I've seen some discussion of the new condos planned a block away at the NEC of Bettis and Bancroft, but I haven't heard anything about this site yet. The adjacent mini-storage building on San Felipe is still standing. It would be a shame to hide a nice new development behind such an inferior land use. What's the scoop?

Did anyone know this was being built? I searched and could not find anything on it. Sure it's not headline news, but it's 15 stories and they made it pedestrian friendly. Not sure how much discussion this will get since it's finished, but thought I'd post a notice anyway. PRLog (Press Release) – Aug 24, 2009 – The Courtyard Houston Galleria is a brand new, 15-story upscale hotel in the Galleria district of uptown Houston. Located less than two blocks from the Houston Galleria shopping center, this Houston Galleria hotel is located just minutes from everything. The Courtyard Houston Galleria is also less than 10 miles from Reliant Stadium (Houston Texans) and Minute Maid Park (Houston Astros). http://www.prlog.org/10320071-courtyard-houston-galleria-provides-new-accommodations-as-houston-galleria-hotel.html

I'm in the market for a larger place and being a fan of MCM I've always been interested in 5050 Woodway. Does anyone know anything about this building? I don't know anything about it other than what has been shown in listings in HAR over the years. The maintenance fee seems to be very low for a high rise. That kind of scares me. I wonder if the maintenance on the building is being done as it should be. Current Listing in 5050 Woodway

Looking for lots Turnberry, a Florida-based developer, is sniffing around Houston for a site to build a swanky high-rise residential tower. A spokeswoman from the company said there is talk about a Houston project, but there was "no information to give out." A look at the company's most recent brochure, however, reveals a lot more. It says Turnberry is planning a 42-story tower for the Uptown/Galleria area. Sources said the company may be looking at a site owned by Walton Street Capital near the Williams Tower. Founded by Donald Soffer, the company has such developments as the Aventura Mall in southern Florida and the Residences condominium hotel at MGM Grand Las Vegas.

Any thoughts on which of the many Galleria area highrise condos is the best in terms of the location, amenities, views of the city, etc? I am including soon to be built buildings like Titan and Turnberry in this, not just already build condos. I appreciate any thoughts/opinions?

Just listed and open today from 1-3, this house was built by Weldon E. Countryman for the 1961 Parade of Homes in Briargrove Park. The style is exotic contemporary which was an evolution of the modern movement away from flat roofs. Banks were not making loans for flat roofed houses since home buyers were becoming increasingly leery of purchasing houses with flat roofs because many of them leaked. This house has been extremely well maintained and should only require some decorating updates. Presently it's difficult to see many of the details as everything has been painted beige but almost everything is still present and waiting to be mod again. The description from the Parade of Homes brochure reads: Mood Oriental: Tempo Modern Colorful setting for contemporary living... Weldon Countrymen's Desert-tone stone home Bedroom and dining room open on tropical gardens...a family/living room centered and extending the full depth of the home, with fireplace wall...Oriental Decor throughout! These are a few of the exciting things you'll see in this unusual home! Double closets in each of the three bedrooms, plus four more in the hall...two beautiful baths with separate powder rooms...a stainless steel all-electric kitchen and many more features make this home outstanding. The price including carpeting throughout is around $30,000.00 Carrier Heat Pump Weathermaker Designer: Weldon Countryman Decorator: Jack Foster Furnished by: Interiors, Inc. Weldon E. Countryman's Oriental modern at 10007 Burgoyne Road features a big family room with brick fireplace, built in bookcases and recessed beam ceiling. The home has many eye-catching features and decorations of the Far East such as the fireplace ornaments. Chris Dornin, chief investment officer for Newport Beach, CA-based Chase Merritt, says there is an opportunity to add an office tower to the site. "We're trying to fine-tune what's feasible, but the opportunity to build one there is very real," he tells GlobeSt.com. http://www.globest.com/news/1077_1077/houston/167607-1.html http://maps.live.com/default.aspx?v=2&...4&encType=1
