Anyone know anything about what's going on at 8 Waverly Court (owned by Anne Bohnn)? A sewer disconnect/demolition permit was just issued, but didn't specify for what exactly.

Co-working is coming to Houston! A few friends of mine are working on turning an old one story office building into a social collaborative workspace. Individuals will be able to rent desks by the month and will be surrounded by other creative individuals to bounce ideas off of. Heres a chron story that ran yesterday about coworking. First, I would like to say what a wonderful site this is. I happened upon it a few days ago and have been up very late since trying to catch up on the past posts. The lost sleep has been worth it. I am not very familiar with downtown Houston (I'm from Baytown), so I will probably have more questions than information to share. I hope that is all right, because I am fascinated with the old structures and growth patterns of cities (especially local ones). Soooo... here is the question: There is a beautiful red brick three story school on Cleburne between Chenevert and Chartres. It has 1925 on the top and is now used as an alternative campus of some sort. What school was originally in this building? Is there a web site or document that focuses on the growth of/information about the school system in Houston? I have discovered several links from these posts about local history, I know if one exists on the schools y'all would know. Thanks in advance for all of the information I will enjoy from this site in the future.

I really prefer a couple of other properties in Downtown and in W. University but there are no vacancies until at least October. Thus my search has brought me to Alta Lofts. Can anyone share any experiences with this property? The units look nice. And they seem to be within walking distance of Metro

Hello all, I'm looking for information about the old Southmore Courts motel located in Midtown at 5003 South Main Street. Did anyone on HAIF ever stay here and have memories of the place? This would have been in the 1950s. I would love to see some photos of the motel. Maybe there are postcards of the place? What about matchbooks? Tell me more!

A popular topic for this area of town is the Plaza Hotel located on Montrose close to 59. The issue remains, what should or could be done with this property. Obviously, it would make some bad ass lofts. The last I heard was that a developer was holding out to recover the amount of money he invested in the 80's. From what I understand this is several million dollars. Anyone have any new information on the grand ole Plaza Hotel?

Other than the photos in the Houston Mod catalog profiling the architect, and the images in Ephemeral City, do any of you have or know of any images of the Cullinan House by Hugo V. Neuhaus, Jr.? I have always been interested in that home, one of the biggest losses in terms of mod demolition for Houston, I feel.

The Parador is one of the last remaining examples of the Mediterranean Byzantine style so popular in the 1920's. Built in 1928. I often wondered what this place was like inside. Its great! You really go back in time to the days of ballroom music and dancing. If ever around Almeda and Binz check this place out. It can accomodate a big crowd. This place has class, in every sense of the word. http://www.paradorhouston.com/history.html http://www.brides.com/upload/images/p/a/paradorhouston@aol.com/00_main/parador_320_primary.jpg

Hi, Im new to this forum and thought that if anyone knew it would be here. A friend of mine saw an article in the chronicle this saturday about a nice project in the museum district called "Tuscan 1 Townhomes". He said it sounded like my taste and I was eager to get more information or contact information for them. Does anyone know of this development that can help? I'm looking for something modern and unique in the museum district area or montrose. Thanks! Scott

I used to go to a school called "Pearl". Actually there was a Pearl 1 (Kindergarten - 4th Grade) and Pearl 2 (5th - 8th Grade) and I went to Pearl 2. Both are gone now or at least "Pearl" is gone and I don't think either location is bein' used as a school any more. Does anyone on here remember the locations of either or the Pearl schools? Edit: June 1980 Pearl School - 5116 Caroline - 528-6002

I'm looking at a personal letter that Dr. Michael DeBakey wrote to another doctor. In the letter he listed his address of 5323 Cherokee Street Houston, Texas 77005. Does anyone know the architect of the West University/Museum District home? When was the famous house built?

Beware of the stuff that's for sale. Much of it is crap. Check the State of Texas website for vital statistics. I never did much genealogical research in TX so I'm not sure just what's available and what's accessible. Are you aware of the Clayton Library, Center for Generalogical Research, 5300 Caroline. One of the 1/2 dozen or so best genealogical libraries in the country. Check the HPL catalog and restrict the search to 'Clayton.' Talk to the librarians there. If there's a book that's been published about Houston/Harris Co. vital statistics, they should have it. They probably won't have much on California. Many Mormon Stakes have branch libraries through which you can order anything on film from the big library in Salt Lake City - don't have to be church member (or at least didn't used to have to). There's a small fee. They'll have a catalog of what's available and microform readers to use. You may also be able to get a list of researchers who will do your work for you for a fee. I haven't done genealogy for years but there used to be forums on line devoted to just about any surname where people exchanged information on the families they're interested in. Have you just tried googling on 'Torvald?' I think one of them was called GenForum or something like that. If there isn't one on your surname, start one. There's a published index to the Houston Post from 1984 until it folded at HPL Central - should still be able to use it at the Julia Ideson bldg while Central is closed; a place to look if you think any of your people of interest were still alive that late.

a unitarian universalist church is a great place for people who eschew denominationalism. it's a great place to search for "universalist" truths....truths that are evident or similar in many religions. the most important thing is to GO. see what you find out. don't let your spirit starve. also, fellowship of the woodlands (albeit far from town) utilizes music, performance art, drama and object lessons in the main service. the pastor often quotes philosophers and other religions. it's refreshing. i have friends who attend unity church and love it. i've heard that other unitarian churches have a different "crowd". you might have to attend more than one to find the church that suits you.
