  1. Anybody know what the original club atop 3400 Montrose was? I vaguely remember Glenn McCarthy had several clubs in town and that was one of them, I thought the Cork Club but that has been identified as atop the Central National Bank Bldg. I know it was a gay club in the early 70s, the Palace or Plantation or something like that, Scott Gertner's, a jazz club, etc., but it dates to the 50s I believe.
  2. Has anyone heard about this? Their website is pretty generic, but someone on the Nextdoor app mentioned it’s going to be at the southwest corner of Montrose & West Alabama at 3900 Montrose Blvd. Their list of “partners” (see image below) appears to be quite wide ranging...including both Bludorn restaurant and giant Japanese tech investor SoftBank Group. https://bridgecityhouston.com/theorigin/
  3. Any updates on what the construction crews over at 601 Richmond are working on? Brooklyn Athletic club was the former occupant of this space, but they've been closed for nearly a year now, if not longer. The latest update I heard was that Pi Pizza's Anthony Calleo was opening a new restaurant in the space, but that was last reported on back in July 2018 (source: http://houston.culturemap.com/news/restaurants-bars/07-19-18-whats-eric-eating-podcast-anthony-calleo-pi-pizza-new-montrose-restaurant/#slide=0). Anyone know? I also noticed that the two old brick houses directly adjacent to this space are on the market for a cool $1M each (source: and https://www.har.com/4316-jack-street/sale_33223330 and https://www.har.com/4320-jack-street/sale_27800941).
  4. Two or three years ago I was at the Continental Club downtown and saw they had one of the signs from the Cinema West theatre backstage. Does anyone remember this theatre? I believe it was an adult theater on Richmond or Westteimer in the 70s (before VHS tapes). Was it a chain of theaters?
  5. FB Friday I'm In Love: Numbers Nightclub Documentary is asking if anyone can recall the person on the far left (circa 1981-1982). Please response to the FB page
  6. I viewed this process as simply a resident of Montrose. The Churches journey seemed an Arduous and perhaps painful process. After 18 years of observing the amount of commendable community service this church had provided for Montrose………I was somewhat gobsmacked ( technical term used by women of a certain age.) at how it all played out.
  7. I know that it was converted from a mansion and was in Montrose. My Aunt was a visitor there many times. I absolutely LOVED the antebellum stair case. Surely someone else remembers this. IF not, I will feel older than my 50 years! Lifetime Houstonian!
  8. I’m not sure this was posted before...... I was a silent observer of a zoom meeting concerning this. The resale shop wants more parking. The median between Graustark and Mt Vernon at Lovett blvd was chosen location for parking. None of the businesses nor residents remember any type of notification mailed and the posted sign that gives details is “ smaller than a bread box”. Apparently this is property up for sale ( or gifting) by the COH real estate Dept ( who thinks this could be a money making opportunity?)and the Guild of Catholic Women’s Charity. Does the Charity pay city property taxes? The streets and median will be converted to parking lot. All the clinched jaws and frustrated faces reminded me of the community talks about Brazos street conversion in 2019.
  9. With the help of HPL TXR Reference, I found city directory listings for Carol's Kitchen which we used to frequent daily in the 1970s.
  10. Any Montrose Historians able to help me understand what Gibbs was doing operating a boat dealership in the middle of Montrose for 20+ years? Does anyone have any first hand knowledge of someone actually having worked there or purchased a seaworthy vessel from there? It seems that if the business was so strong that the closing of Gibbs would have left a massive vacuum in the area for those wanting to purchase a boat. So was was the place really?
  11. On April 26th this boarded up house burnt down. It belongs to the Recovery Center next door. Today I noticed it is gone.
  12. This lot/s would be a great spot for another high rise, not sure if the lots are all for sale but combined it would be plenty big enough for another Hines/Hanover/Madison Marquette high rise.
  13. One of the blogs I follow, Brand New, has done an extensive piece about CAMH's new logo, which originates from the shape of the building. Linky: feed://feeds.feedburner.com/ucllc/brandnew Here's the before and after:
  14. It has always been aknowledged in my neighborhood that Gov. Sterling lived in the newly developed Avondale District ( 600 Avondale) in the 1910's before he built his fabulous mansion-- but I was given this: http://www.chron.com...id=1999_3128940 now I wonder? anyone have any information?
  15. The lot directly next to Indika's on Westheimer (500 block) as well as the older house next to that has been fenced off with what looks like construction fencing-- anyone know what is planned?
  16. There is a historic house at Rosalie and Bagby (grey house-- 3012 Bagby on googlemap it was moved there from corner of westheimer and bagby before strip shopping was built)-- thought it was going to be a lawyers office but now im told a a liquor license permit is posted? Anyone know what is going on?
  17. I'm surprised I wasn't able to find this on HAIF. I ran a few searches, but nothing came up. Apologies if this is a repeat thread... Swamplot reported in May that the Univ. of St. Thomas will be building a new performance arts center near the Menil campus. The article indicates that the building will be four stories and just under 100k square feet. Here's the accompanying rendering: http://swamplot.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/st-thomas-performing-arts-center.jpg University of St. Thomas's Performing Arts Center Moving in Next to Menil Campus
  18. This place has been listed for about half a year now. I actually live down the street. They tore down the garage/garage apartment a couple months ago. $349k cash only, no tear-down... http://search.har.com/engine/204-Stratford-Houston-TX-77006_HAR11532856.htm
  19. Those intimately acquainted with the Montrose neighborhood may be familiar with a house near the corner of Brandt and Sul Ross; it's surely one of the more lovely reminders of a once gracious neighborhood. (photo submissions appreciated) Movie buffs might recognize it as the home of the bitter old miser (Stacy Keach) in the 1970 Robert Altman film Brewster Mc Cloud. Grateful acknowledgment to HAIF member 'patsy' for providing the following information: The Lucia House was built by Vincenzo Lucia probably in the early 1900's. He relocated his family from West Dallas where I believe he lived above the Magnolia Macaroni Factory which he founded. He was also one of the first board members of the First City Bank which became First City National Bank. His portrait shows him to be a portly prosperous gentleman with a walrus mustache looking a lot like Teddy Roosevelt. His granddaughter, Carmen Lucia Dickerson, has been my best friend for all of my 62 years and I can remember visiting the house on Sul Ross to visit her grandmother on holidays. The house was left to her son, Anthony Lucia who owned Lucia Insurance Agency. I cannot tell you about the future of the house. You can read about the Lucia family in a book of Houston Italian families that can be found at the Italian Cultural Center on Milford Street off of Montrose. It is a very colorful family and the 3 story house was filled with beautiful antiques and a massive dining room table for family gatherings. It also has a basement. The family gatherings all took place before the freeway cut though a lovely neighborhood filled with houses not quite so grand as Mama Lucia's. Another contact would be Gregory Lucia, Attorney. He wrote the article for the Italian Book and I'm sure he could tell you any historical facts you would like to know about the house. ***************************************** Thanks, patsy.
  20. Does anyone remember this? I was in the 6th grade at Horn Elementary in September of 1959. They told us to go straight home, but would not tell us why. I knew that Kolter Elementary was named after one of the teachers who died. A few years ago I worked with a lady who was the substitute that took over Jeanne Kolter's classroom after her death. You will need to scroll down to read the part about Poe School. http://www.texasranger.org/dispatch/7/Gooding.htm
  21. Ever heard of Ecclessia? Taft at Drew street? Not really a church-- since they didn't apply for permits as a CHURCH (permits for coffee house and art gallery YES--church--no--permit requires x number of spaces per square foot of space --this building has no off street parking)-- 3 times each Sunday, dozens and dozens amd dozens of cars park in and around and block driveways/sidewalks-and leave no passageway for local traffic or heaven forbid for emergency vehicles (the sidestreets are narrow)- The local civic organization has meet with Ecclessia many times over many years and gotten nowhere-- COH same thing-- HPD solution was to start calling and reporting parking violators-- the local residents decided to try that-- this is what happened-- This is what was posted on youtube by whomever took video--A few seconds before this video began we had asked this constable to ticket two cars that were blocking a sidewalk, he was also blocking the sidewalk, but that this another issue. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1O88-3weR90 Why is HPD giving Ecclessia special consideration?
  22. Does anyone have any information about this complex? Any ideas on maintenence fees? Ever known anyone that lived there? I'm wondering about security, noise, demographics, that kind of stuff. Are any of the units leased? I've sent off a few emails and I find that I'm rather impatient. (If it doesnt ring a bell its the brick complex sitting in front of St. Thomas Univ., next door to the Black Labrador and across the street from Diedrichs Coffee.) Thanks.
  23. The long-empty house/restaurant at Montrose and Autrey (at the 59 bridge, across from Danton's) has been stripped of all of its additions, and is now back to its basic structure. Also this week the large billboard in it's back yard that overlooked the freeway has been hauled away, opening up more land. Any word on what is to be done with the house and property?
  24. Does anyone know the architect of record? Who built this? ANy old photos? Such a cool midcentury building with not a lot of info... It was home to some of the nicest bars/nightclubs in the city and has a lot of history that people don't appreciate.
