  1. Well, my grandmother died in 1959 and my mother has Alzheimer's, so there's no way I can find out anything. I seem to remember going there once and I have a picture of my grandmother in a swimming pool, which is probably at Hot Wells. I'll have to look for it and see if there are any identifying buildings around it. If I find it, I'll scan and post it.
  2. This is the picture from the inside cover of the 1965 Citadel
  3. I think Morris Frank was a friend of my grandfather's. I found this picture in his collection.
  4. OK, I wasn't going to write this one down, because it's not as funny on paper, but here goes. The Jax commercial that I remember is this one: An old lady goes into a bar to ask for Jax beer. She has a high, nasally voice - very irritating. The bartender answers her back in the same high voice. After a short conversation, she asks the bartender if he is making fun of her. He says no, that he always talks like that. Just then an attractive young woman walks up to the bar and asks for a beer. The bartender answers in a voice that sounds like a young man - sort of a smooth talker. When he finishes his conversation, he goes back to the old lady and addresses her again in the high squeaky voice. The old lady accuses him of making fun of her again. He replies that he wasn't making fun of her (the old lady), but that he was making fun of HER (indicating the young woman.) I remember that it took me awhile to catch the joke. I think my mother finally explained it to me.
  5. Harmony Wedding Chapel My best friend in college got married there. It was so small that there was only a center aisle, no side aisles.
  6. Thanks so much for these pictures. It's been over 50 years since I was in that house. I seem to remember that the actual dancing studio was in the back of the house, but I don't remember if it had windows looking out over the back yard.
  7. Jax was beer. They used to have some really funny animated commercials. I tried to find them on youtube, but no luck.
  8. Marshall Fields was the store in the center - north of Joskes. Penney's was on the east side. When the mall opened, there was a food court on the third level. It had McDonalds, and some kind of restaurant with grilled chicken. Later on, these all closed and there was a smaller food court on the second level close to Joske's (which was not separated from the rest of the mall.) The third level was contiguous. My parents used to walk there every day. I loved that mall because it was never crowded. I always thought it was much nicer than Memorial City, until MC was remodeled in the 2000s.
  9. Thanks for the info, hellbilly. I did another google search and found this: http://houstorian.wordpress.com/2007/03/20/hot-wells-tx/
  10. My grandmother used to go to a place called Hot Wells. I think it was in that area, but can't find any evidence of it anywhere.
  11. Yes, Whataburger was in the hallway to the left of Wards (now Target.) If you were approaching Wards from inside the mall, you would turn left before you went into the store. It was somewhere near the Army recruiting office. Oh, and someone else mentioned a grocery store. There was a Weingartens located near where the skating rink is now. It was closed some time in the 70s and United Jewelers took its place. I think this was before Lord & Taylor was built.
  12. Town & Country opened around 1966. I don't remember when Joske's was built, but Sakowitz opened in November of 1967. I know because I worked there from the time it opened until 1972. Behind Joske's was a mini mall containing a few stores, but the only store name I remember was The Berry Tree. There was also a store called The Mod Mart in the strip center that was on the east side of the street that runs from Kimberley to where Joske's was. It had nice gift items and I still have a glass lampshade that came from there. There was a Mini Max grocery store and SuperX drug store. There was also a James' Coney Island and Demaris Barbeque. They were both on Kimberley. The Mexican Restaurant was Casa Martinez.
  13. This chart was published in the paper after the last snowfall we had on Christmas Eve, 2004 Houston Snow (I tried to format the columns, but it didn't work.) 14. There is a discussion of Kiddieland Park starting at post #132 in this thread: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...amp;#entry99710 Welcome to the forum, JRH. I'm assuming that you were born in 1948. So was I.
  15. Off Topic... I taught at the Town & Country school for one semester in 1971. I tried to find the location on the current maps, but I can't remember the address and couldn't find anything that looked like the campus. If you could tell me the address, I'd appreciate it. Thanks
  16. I think it was Handy Dan - something like Home Depot.
  17. They are still called Randall's, they are just owned by Safeway.
  18. I used to shop there all the time at the one in Memorial City. I always believed that it was a more upscale version of Craigs - owned by the same people - but I could be wrong.
  19. There's a fallout shelter under St. Michael Church on Sage Rd. I was only down there once about 20 years ago. They used it for storage then, but the civil defense signs were still there.
  20. I posted some pictures in this thread: http://www.houstonarchitecture.info/haif/i...mp;#entry248348
  21. Here are two pics I have of Krupp & Tuffly - located on Main @ Walker. My grandfather worked here for over 40 years as a salesman and buyer. I probably got these from this forum or from the Bob Bailey collection. I'm not sure of the years, but you can probably tell by the cars.
  22. Foley's opened in 1973. I remember when Ward's opened up, probably in the late 60s. I got my first credit card from there in 1972 when I bought my first color TV. We moved out to that area in 1966 and I believe the mall was new then. I didn't know that Sears had opened in 1962. The store across the street from Town & Country was Sage. It was similar to Globe.
  23. My mother graduated from Sam Houston in 1944. I have her yearbook and would be happy to scan some pictures if anyone wants to see them. I thought there might be a picture of the school, but there is only a close-up of the front steps.
  24. I worked at Sakowitz Town & Country from the day it opened, in November of 1967, until 1972. The store was really pretty inside - the Spanish style that was popular then. The problem with Town & Country, was that it could never "match up" to the Post Oak store. People would go to Post Oak to buy stuff, and come to Town & Country to return them. I used to be cashier in the shoe dept. and it made my manager furious when we would get PO's returns.
