  1. update: it's growing Condo Project Grows in Scope, Size
  2. my vacation this year was spent on the island of java. i stayed about 35 miles south of jakarta, the capital city, in a great area of bogor called bukit sentul, which, when translated is, 'the hills of sentul'. it was an amazing trip. jakarta a new mall being built a common site in bogor - driveways takes precedence over the sidewalks gray street dwellings in bogor a common site on almost every major road - street vendors of all kinds some of the tallest structures in the city an entrance to the university this type of housing could be viewed for miles. a residence with one of the dominant driveways salatiga. a city about 250 miles east of jakarta. i enjoyed this city. a marketplace the only mall in salatiga. the grocery store was located on the highest floor, the 5th floor. the mall had escalators and stairs but no elevators. think this design would fly in houston? the electric company - one of the taller structures in town borobudur in central java- the largest buddhist monument in the world. - it was a truly magnificient site. bellanove country mall. this is a large shopping center containing a hypermart, food court and many, many other stores. i spent quite a bit of time here drinking bad coffee and conversing with the locals. the entrance to bukit sentul this is where i stayed while in indonesia looking out the front door
  3. from metroblogging our fair city's mayor is currently a finalist in the World Mayor 2006 contest. And just who are these World Mayor people, you say? They describe themselves using the following words: World Mayor, an annual project organised by City Mayors, intends to raise the profile of mayors worldwide, as well as honour those who have served their communities well and who have contributed to the well-being of cities, nationally and internationally. Above all, World Mayor wants to show the world what great mayors can achieve. Mayor White is one of 50 finalists (selected from 677 nominees), with only 10 being mayors of cities in North America. vote here
  4. 55% Dixie. Barely in Dixie i thought i'd be more dixie considering i've spent most of my life in the lone star state and most of that in west texas. maybe that hoosier blood running through me is thicker than i thought. i guess texas lingo is different than dixie speak. i say things like: fixin' to for about to wanna for want to kinda for kind of catchup opposed to ketchup and banes for beans.
  5. midtown has become the 'land of possibilities and ideas.' four acres
  6. downtown et al. in addition to the websites mentioned, central houston provides some useful information. a commuter calculator is even available for those who commute.
  7. From the Grapevine: Cactus to Reopen! posted by adrian gonzales (metroblogging)
  8. he speaks the truth. i've been to s. korea several times on vacation. in fact, the first time i went to s. korea i stayed in daegu. it's a vibrant city and the self proclaimed fashion capital of asia. and yes, jumbotrons dot the landscape and are scattered throughout the city as they are in seoul and suwon as well. i would welcome the addition of jumbotrons in houston.
  9. not orlando sanchez or michael berry. how many times will they run before they eventually get the message that houstonians do not want them as mayor.
  10. two steps forward........ just when the winds of change seemed to be sweeping through houston, Joel A. blows into town. i was going to post this in the sports section, but it fits here so much better. this guy must be sleeping with barry bonds. a taste of the article: full article
  11. notice that i posted my article before the new thread was created. no big deal. just thought i'd point that out.
  12. joel kotkin has taken quite an interest in houston. it's too bad his articles don't receive as much hype as those like mapquest and the like. NYC INC: MODEL CITIES indeed.
  13. I'm not sure if this is part of phase two, but i will say this: our transit needs have been answered. at least park-wise. New plans for Hermann Park train
  14. i know. yet another long quote among the many posted on the haif. but i found the list of planning issues and his evaluation to be interesting as many pertain to houston in some fashion. the mcmansion domination, infrastructure or lack thereof, condofication, and parking seem to dominate this forum at times.
  15. are you refering to entertainment? if so, the websites are endless, but here are a few that i often visit. chronicle - entertainment downtown entertainment district http://www.htexas.com/ http://www.chinatownconnection.com/ http://houstonheightsonline.com/ http://www.houstondowntown.com/Home/Lifest...hatToDo/Events/ http://www.houstontheaterdistrict.org/ http://houston.metblogs.com/ http://ghpa.org/tours/ http://www.002mag.com/ houston press - events houston museum district great houston event guide
  16. agreed. why subscribe when one can simply read the news online. as for online readership:
  17. hillarious thread! this is just what i needed today. for those interested jane jeffcoat
  18. the Texas minor emergency center and wellness clinic has also signed on as a tenant. groundbreaking for the project is slated for this summer, with completion set for the fourth quarter of 2007. source: houston business journal
  19. I-45 redesign workshop set for may 6. jim weston of the I-45 coalition. more
  20. Live TV Studio to anchor Dallas Downtown Project
  21. it was assumed, i guess, that individuals would visit simply because it is a presedential libray. once the clinton library was built, that mindset changed.
  22. 'one stop shopping' seems to be the catch phrase. instead of multiple stops at different stores, ie: cvs for your toothpaste and shampoo, foleys for towels and cologne and randalls for grocery items, people have become accustomed to having everything under one roof in the form of a super walmart or super target. thus the strong desire for many to have one downtown. that being said, i'd still prefer a grocery store and some type of electronics store in the form of a circuit city or comp usa. although sears is a short distance away via the light-rail, their electronics selection is limited.
  23. it appears to be a two man race for the bush library, although baylor has yet to present a proposal. if the primary factors in determining the final site are location, easy access, hotels, etc., that is, already a destination location, waco, with only a regional airport and single interstate seems an unlikey candidate. i'm assuming this is the primary reason the west texas proposal was cut. recent articles: If Dallas wins Bush site, it still must build an attraction worth trip If you build it, be sure RVs can come
