  1. I live in Montrose, so the stores that I frequent are Fiesta on Dunlavy, Randall$ on Westheimer and Shephard and Krogers on West Gray. I do the bulk shopping at the Fiesta because of low prices (and for a small store, that particular Fiesta has an amazing wide selection, even frozen Indian dinners). The Randalls is closest to me, but we treat it bascially like a convenience store due to its high prices. The Krogers is somewhere in the middle. I hardly shop at HEB stores due to the fact that there is no HEB store in Montrose. We also shop at Canino's for produce. Grocery stores that I go to now and then: Spec's in Midtown, Central Market and Rice Epicurean for occasional gourmet items. I also go to Daido's, the Japanese food store (the only one in HOuston as far as I know) on Westheimer for sashimi and other Japanese foods. Also, Indian Grocers in "Little India" for Indian groceries. I don't go to Whole Foods very much due to its high prices...and not to mention, it has this high yuppie factor that is a tad annoying. :-)
  2. Apparently, this guy loathes the idea of a supermarket CLOSE to his house. I say we send realtors from out-of-way suburbs (ya know, these endless suburbs where you die of starvation if your car breaks down and you can't drive to a food store) like Katy or Sugarland to him and convince him to move out of there. :-)
  3. Oh, yummy -- I must go try this out! Thanks for the tip.
  4. Thanks for the tip. And yeah, that's what I mean by the type of BBQ shrimp -- I was trying to distinguish it from the other kind, which was more like shrimp scampi with hardly any seasoning at all (kind of like shrimp with drawn butter...bleah.)
  5. Hey, my hubby and I are going to NOLA this week, and we're looking for a mid-priced place in French Quarter or downtown or nearby that serves NOLA-style BBQ shrimp. (Just to be clear, we're looking shrimps cooked in a spicy sauce, not "shrimp scampi" style like at Pascal's in the Garden district for example.) We used to like the dish at a place by French Market named Cafe Gumbolya that unfortunatley has been long lost to Katarina. Any suggestions?
  6. I guess that when you have money, you can do whatever you want with your place. :-)
  7. $500k for that *tiny* land? And as I recall, it is oddly shaped. What the heck can you build there?
  8. Hmm...if it was the same building, that probably explains the entrance canopy, which I thought was kind of fancy for a dry cleaner. :-)
  9. This is way before my time, so I can't help you, but which corner was this?
  10. This isn't much but I just came across a blog on Houston Chronicle about a former paperboy who remembers about meeting his future wife who used to live at River Oaks Gardens in 1950's. http://blogs.chron.com/bayoucityhistory/20..._history_3.html
  11. Cool house! However I have to say I got a chuckle out of the first 2 pictures in the gallery -- the way the chair was centered in the shot made me think "throne room". :-)
  12. Well, Texas ain't the only state with stupid legislators. Look up Douglas Bruce of Colorado for a good example. Oh and don't forget that former Illinois governor (I'm not going to try to spell his name :-) )
  13. Thank you, folks, so much for the recommendations -- I"ll look into those 2. Also, have anyone ever visited Dr. Arthur Grove at 1909 S. Shepherd or Dr. Angie Dinh at 3425 S. Shepherd? I grabbed these off Google Maps and looked them up on Dr. Oogle.
  14. Thanks, but as I mentioned in my orignal posting, I wasn't looking for a cheap option -- I was looking for something in the middle. I had made a mistake going to one dentist that turned out to be expensive -- she charged twice what my last dentist in Colorado had charged. (Hence my crack about overpriced boutique dentists. :-) )
  15. I'm looking for recommendations for a good dentist in the Montrose area or nearby areas. The thing is, I don't have dental insurance, so I need somoene that is reasonably priced. No overpriced boutique dentistries or anything like that. :-) (Just to be clear, I'm not looking for a free or low-income clinic, since I'm not poor.) Thanks in advance.
  16. I know this is a bit off the subject, but where did the old Half Price Books store use to be? These townhouses are going for a million dollars? Good luck trying to sell these in this economy, and with many other townhouses selling for less in the same area.
  17. A cool idea, actually...and one advantage of such a place over cruise ships is that you wouldn't have to worry about sea sickness. :-)
  18. Now that I've seen the interior pictures of that place on Facebook, I"ll say one thing for sure...Bill List had lousy taste in interior design. :-) It was just like a standard 60's70's middle-class suburban house, just with many more rooms and an indoor swimming pool. Check out that living room with gold shag rug, low ceiling and rock wall. And these staircases with ironwork banisters that I presume were intended to make the house look fancy but did the opposite -- they just looked tacky. (As I recall, fancy ironwork bainsters were already considered passe by late 70's when I understand that place was built.) To sum it up....Mafia meets Brady Bunch.
  19. Which Taco Cabana are you referring to? The one at Westheimer and Montrose, or all Taco Cabana's?
  20. If you're looking for sashimi-quality fish, go to Daido's, a Japanese supremarket on Westheimer in Westchase. That's what we do if we want to have sashimi at home (it's cheaper than going to a restaurant if you just want sashimi and want more variety than the "gringo" stuff sushi chefs throw at you. :-) )
  21. From personal experiences, I would say that sometimes crimes aren't committed by people outside the neighborhood, but by people *inside* the neighborhood, especially kids. (I'm not saying that all kids are bad, but some kids don't have much adult supervision these days especially if both of their parents work outside their homes.)
  22. Hmm... so this house isn't lacking for interested buyers, but nobody can swing financing for it. Are people eveyrhwere just having a hard time getting financing for houses (given the fact that we're in a recession), or is there something about this house (foreclouse, too much fixing up required, whatever) that is scaring banks off?
  23. Interesting design. But I think it needs a little work -- as one of the YouTube commenters mentioned, it looks too much like an outhouse with a porch. If the porch area was enclosed, the design might make more sense.
  24. If you think your employer-subsidiarized premiums are high, try self-insurance -- trust me, it ain't cheap. And you'de be amazed at all sorts of reasons that insurance companies would give for not insuring you, no matter how healthy you are....like deafness. (Yes, I know this is supposed to be illegal, but we're talking about health insurance companies here....modern-day mafias.) I'm kinda of undecided about universal health care. For one thing, I'm skeptic that the US government would run such a program efficiently. After all, people aren't exactly raving about Medicare. (When my father was alive, he carried a private insurance in addition to Medicare because he thought Medicare wasn't good enough.) But on the other hand, our healthcare system, as it is now, is pretty screwed up -- for one thing, Americans are bascially using heatlh insurance as poor man's socialized medicine. I mean, 30 years ago or more, health insurance was something you got for major emergencies, but nowdays, people expect health insurance to pay for *everything*, such as birth control.
  25. Yeah, I wondered about that complex, too but couldn't find out much about it, either. By the way, wasn't Hugh Potter one of the original developers of River Oaks' residential neighborhood? Also, I found this photo on Google that showed what some of these apartment buildings looked like (look in the upper right-hand corner). As nice as the layout of the complex looked, the buildings themselves looked kind of plain and made me think "housing project". Maybe that explains why they were torn down to make way for the current residences. Just a wild guess. ETA: I posted this at the same time musicman posted his with the links to the other photos, so...jinx. :-)
