lockmat
Where is beachtowngalveston gonna be? I thought it had taken up all the land on the East End. Maybe Trumps would be just west of their area?
dalparadise
If Trump has bought any Galveston property, it should be a clear sign that he has insider info confirming Casino gambling will pass in Texas. That would be his interest in Galveston. Between a Trump hotel and a coverted Tillman Convention center, the Seawall would start to look like Atlantic City inside of a year and a half. Does Galveston have the potential become "the" gambling spot on the Gulf, even larger than New Orleans?
TAK
I was thinking the same. Does Galveston have the potential become "the" gambling spot on the Gulf, even larger than New Orleans? There are no beaches in New Orleans. Atlantic City supposedly has "dirty water" on its beaches, too. I've been hearing this 'rumor' as long as i've been registered on HAIF. I'm guessing Trump, who is a good real estate investor, is hearing the same rumors and has some options on land in Galveston. He really likes the gambling business, and if gambling is coming to Galveston, Trump and Landry's could own the scene. Landry's will buy and develop for their theme/experience/restaurant business even if there isn't gambling. I don't think Trump is interested in the restaurant and hotel business, per se. But I want some Galveston real estate soon.
dalparadise
I was thinking the same. Does Galveston have the potential become "the" gambling spot on the Gulf, even larger than New Orleans?New Orleans is hardly "THE" gambling spot on the gulf. In fact, Lake Charles probably blows it away (okay, I know Lake Charles is a bit inland). But New Orleans only has one casino. It's very posh, but is crooked as hell. I've never lost so much money so quickly. Something must be up there.I think Biloxi, or some other places in Mississippi like Gulfport are (or were) "THE" places for gambling. I've never been, but I hear there's a lot going on.
editor
Atlantic City supposedly has "dirty water" on its beaches, too.You are correct -- the water color in Galveston and Atlantic City is about the same. But at least AC has some good waves.

dalparadise
How does the city of Atlantic City compare to Galveston (tourist's perspective)?AC is where Philadelphia and New York City go to gamble and play. It's a dirty city, alot like Galveston. There's a Jersey Shore charm there, similar to Galveston's Strand. AC has several casinos, which make up the largest part of its skyline. It is notoriously crime-ridden. It is also very poor. It is perhaps a glimse of the possible future of Galveston. AC is no Vegas. Not even in the same world. It's more of a day-trip destination or an overnight stay for elderly people in from NYC. That's the big difference. You don't see a lot of people planning their vacations around a trip to AC. dalparadise
You don't pull any punches do you? No offense intended. Galveston is not the best kept town in Texas, though. Parts of it shine, sure. Much of Broadway and the streets around it need to take a mulligan, though.

Subdude
The comparison of Galveston and AC is right on the money. AC does have a decent beach and nice boardwalk, but Galveston has the Strand and some nice historical buildings.
TAK
if gambling comes to galveston, i'm sure the fertittas can get a boardwalk near and a shark tank into their already existing casino/convention center.

PalinPower
I live in Galveston and can not wait for the day we have nice, luxurious casinos! We need help to revive this town after IKE. Galveston as a gambling town would be a HUGE success.. no questions asked. Vegas and other casino towns would hurt from this. I can remember when coushatta opened. I quit paying for airfare to Vegas and used that as my play money at Coushatta. With Houston one of the largest growing cities in the world, it would be a huge mistake not to move forward on this motion. However you will have to put a cattle prod to perry and hutchinson to get off the couch.(I believe they are both against it.. not 100%) (god forbid 55 gets reinstated)... TBH I have been looking for property elsewhere....and selling... this however has sparked my interest.. so thats another thing for them too consider.. keeping residents here. WE also Need a Pappasiitos and Pappadeaux!!!! YUMMY... anyway thats my opinion. ps.. (thats if BO doesnt ruin it for us all)
VicMan
I think Galveston will be revived. Houstonians need a place to play, and Galveston will be it.This will also further push the poor out of Galveston and into La Marque, Hitchcock, and Texas City. Galveston ISD should focus on turning Ball High School into a magnet to get more out of district people. It should also aggressively promote Austin Middle School (now a 5-8 magnet).BTW do you guys feel that the county seat should remain in Galveston? Or should it move inland? Galveston waters are not exactly a tourist attraction (unless you are desperate) so the island may as well become a gambling playground. So back to topic, was Trump planning or considering building a tower or casino there? His clothing line is quite cool I must say. Wearing one of his shirts now. Trump's not going to do anything for a while. The construction loan on his not-quite-completed (and only 75% sold) tower in Chicago was due last week. Instead of paying it back, he's suing the companies that lent him the money for not extending the loan. Trump likes to put on a good show, but he's being hurt by the financial crisis the same as everyone else. There was an article a couple of weeks ago about how he sued a New York Times reporter for $3 billion because the reporter's research put Trump's actual wealth at something like $150 million, not the billions he claims. The court rules in favor of the reporter. Galveston has had a hundred years to build itself into Houston's playground, but somehow it has simply failed to happen. I don't know why. moni
My thinking is because Texas is such a conservative state, bible belt mentality, etc. Casinos and tourism go hand in hand, but it will take a number of elections before politicians consider any kind of gambling. Nothing wrong with having conservative Christian values, but that doesn't lend to liberal legislation that would allow for gambling.

Converting them to actual closed sales is going to be a delicate flower, however.
