pineda
I've heard about something called "Santa's Wonderland" in B-CS that costs about $15.00 per car to drive through an area filled with millions of lights. Also, something called "Christmas in the Park" at Central Park there that is supposedly free-of-charge. Are either or both of these worth driving up there to see?* B-CS is Bryan-College Station. WestGrayGuy
I remember Christmas in the Park. It wasn't all that. I would not drive up to see it. Of course this was 5-7 years ago.
UrbaNerd
Simply drive through the river oaks area, or even one of the suburban areas's rich areas. (Sweetwater, parts of The Woodlands, etc) Its free, except for the cost of gas.
ssullivan
Simply drive through the river oaks area, or even one of the suburban areas's rich areas. (Sweetwater, parts of The Woodlands, etc)Â Its free, except for the cost of gas.The best neighborhood Christmas event in the area in my opinion is Lights in the Heights, sponsored by the Woodland Heights Neighborhood. It's totally free and designed to get people out of cars and out walking through the neighborhood. Several blocks of two parallel streets are closed to all traffic but pedestrians and horse-drawn carriages. The streets are lined with thousands of luminarias and almost all of the houses are decorated with lights and garlands. Awards are given in about a dozen categories to the best houses. Many houses have musical entertainment in the front yards or on the porches (my church's handbell choir, which I play in, will be performing at 628 Euclid this year), and others provide cookies, cider, hot chocolate, and other treats for passers by. For the kids Santa frequently makes a visit on the Norhill esplanade. This year's event is Saturday, December 11 from 6:00-9:00 PM. If you've never been I highly recommend it. Woodland Heights is a really neat old neighborhood full of houses from the 1920s and 1930s, and the job the owners do decorating their architectural gems for the holidays is amazing. You can find out more on the Lights in the Heights website at http://www.woodland-heights.org/Events/LIH/Index.htm.
pineda
Thanks, ssulivan! I think I'll skip the B-CS trip and do this one instead!
citykid09
Yes Santa's Wonderland is Just out side of College Station on the way to Houston on Highway 6, I have never been but I know they have a cowboy theme park. It doesn't have rides but it's kind of like a Renaissance Festival year round.Heres a link to both of them.http://www.tombstonetexas.com/santaswond.htm
aggie0083
I enjoyed Santa's Wonderland when I went through it last year. If you go on the hayride instead of staying in your car to go through it I believe it's only $7 as opposed to $15. It takes aproximatly 25, 30 min. to get though it. N8TIV
I would say that Santa's Wonderland on Highway 6 near College Station is well worth it. Just try it and you'll think so too. It goes way back in the woods, and has more lights than you might expect.
GovernorAggie
I plan on going through Santa's Wonderland soon. It looks very cool.I don't know how many of you are familiar with this place, but when I was in North Carolina, there was a town called McAdenville about 15 minutes from Charlotte. It's nickname was Christmastown, USA because the WHOLE town gets decked out this time of year. Traffic backs up onto I-85 from the traffic exiting into the town. This tells you how big of a deal it is--their county (Gaston County) apparently subsidizes the people's power bills during this event, which is at least a month long. pineda
I know a friend up in the Wichita Falls (Texas) area that says the college up there (Midwestern) puts on a spectacular holiday light show as well. Has anyone been up that way recently to see it?
H-Town Man
I've driven past Christmas Wonderland on Hwy. 6 a few times, and I don't think I've ever seen so many lights in one place. I almost drove off the road just looking at it. You may not want to miss it, Pineda. It's a see-to-believe.And if you want a real experience, stop by the town of Anderson on the way back and take a carriage ride from the courthouse to the Fanthorp Inn, where Sam Houston stayed. Neat family historical fun.
Scotch
Santa's Wonderland is great, pack the car or SUV full of people as up to 10 people in the same vehicle get in for $15. http://www.santas-wonderland.com/home.html While you are here, visit Downtown Bryan by taking the William J. Bryan exit from Hwy. 6 and eat at one of the great retaurants there, my favorite being Square One on W.J. Bryan just west of Bryan St. Then stay at the LaSalle Hotel and the next day try another restaurant and visit Messina Hof winery, or if you have children, visit the Children's Museum of the Brazos Valley, also downtown. Make a weekend of B-CS! http://www.downtownbryan.com/ http://www.messinahof.com
Scotch
Santa's Wonderland is already lit up this year.
