torvald
i am coming down with a cold... feeling tired, scratchy throat, stuffy nose... and i have a really important presentation monday. i rarely get sick, so i am at a total loss as to what's an old wives tale and what actually works. i'm worried by monday i'll look like a bad nyquil ad and sound horrible. i asked a few folks and got a wide range of advice... take leftover antibiotics drink lots of orange juice take all sorts of new age herbal things take a spoon full of whiskey chased by a spoonful of honey (as tasty as it sounds) try ear-candling (scroll down the linked page for more photos) hot soup hot tea is there something that you've found that works and doesn't involve fire? MarthaG
I like Alka-Seltzer Cold Plus, about 30 mins before your meeting. The big blast of aspirin will make you feel great (for a little while) and it really opens up your head. That will get your though the meeting without looking and feeling obviously sick. Other than that, I think you have to let the cold run its course. And be nice, don't pass the cold around.

editor
Nothing works. All you can do is wait it out. The best way to do that is to sleep until it's gone. I take Tylenol Cold to help me breathe, and then just sleep until it fixes itself.
tamtagon
When I was in college and thought I was coming down with a cold, I would get, like, totally drunk, that seemed to get rid of the nasty virus.
Houston1stWordOnTheMoon
Jack Daniels, fresh lemon juice, hot water and a little honey. Will help you sleep through the night, then take whatever over the counter meds. for your meeting---something that doesnt cause drowsiness of course
4thGenHoustonian
Zicom works well for me if I'm just coming down with a cold...cuts the duration to a few days. I have used the spray and the swabs and had success with both. If you already have a full blown cold, it doesn't work as well. Guest Sebastian De La Ghetto
Drink plenty of fluids, take vitamins and SLEEP. Do NOT take antibiotics, they wont help with a virus.

torvald
i did a few things. i did the steam thing. the vitamin C thing, ended up getting a cold remedy pill and trying it in the morning to see if it worked or made me drowsy or weird. it didn't! so i took it again later on. the presentation went well but my nose starting running in the middle of it and i needed a tissue on and off. i think it went pretty well... i hope the feedback is as good as i think it is!!! TheNiche
Nothing works. All you can do is wait it out.Not entirely true. If you are consistent in the use of bedrest and vitamins and try not to drink cold drinks, you can avoid the worst. Steam also helps.I learned these things from observation, unfortunately. Prior to that, I would've agreed with you, but I'm well into my third week of having a persistent cough. Meanwhile, seemingly against all odds, both my former and present girlfriends (quick bounceback from mutually-agreed upon disolution of non-professional relationship), each of which I am responsible for having infected, have either gotten over it or avoided the Torvaldian stage completely.EDIT: Rereading this, my statement makes me sound like a serious asshole. To be adequately clear, I'm not normally the kind of guy that goes around from girl to girl, leaving a diseased populous in my wake. That's just the way it happened to turn out...a fluke of luck...for everybody involved, despite the epidemological evidence to the contrary. ...and of course now I sound like I'm bragging, but you'll just have to trust I'm not. If I wanted to brag, I could. Edited September 26, 2006 by TheNiche
