Hawthorne Avenue at Burlington Street

Stroll the tree-shaded streets of the Westmoreland Historic District with GHPA's Walking Tours Program. Trained volunteers will relate stories of the neighborhood's rich history and note the area's distinctive architectural styles during the 90-minute guided walking tour.

Westmoreland Place was developed in 1902. Houston's first "private place" neighborhood attracted many prominent families to what was then the southwestern edge of the city. Many of the earliest homes survive, providing a fascinating look at the residential architecture of the early 1900s. Westmoreland is a City of Houston and National Register historic district.

Please note: this is an exterior architectural tour only; the tour will not go inside any of the houses.

The tour meets in the traffic island on Hawthorne Avenue at Burlington Street. Due to freeway construction, Hawthorne is no longer accessible from Bagby Street. For directions, please visit GHPA's Web site. Free on-street parking is available along Hawthorne, Burlington and adjacent streets. There are no public restrooms on the tour route.

Tickets are $10 per person ($7 for GHPA members and students with valid ID). Children 11 years old and under are admitted free. Tickets go on sale at 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, September 10, in the traffic island on Hawthorne at Burlington. Reservations are not required. Tickets may be charged to VISA, MasterCard or America Express.

Many of the homes in Westmoreland were built from designs found in pattern books. As a companion book to this tour, we recommend Texas Houses Built by the Book by Margaret Culbertson. To purchase this book online or to view our selection of titles on local history, architecture and historic preservation, please visit the online GHPA Bookstore. Order generation and fulfillment are powered by the technology of Amazon.com, assuring that your information is secure and orders are shipped in a timely manner.

When is the next tour??? Gotta go!
