Hawthorne Avenue at Burlington Street

Stroll the tree-shaded streets of the Westmoreland Historic District with GHPA's Walking Tours Program. Trained volunteers will relate stories of the neighborhood's rich history and note the area's distinctive architectural styles during the 90-minute guided walking tour.

Westmoreland Place was developed in 1902. Houston's first "private place" neighborhood attracted many prominent families to what was then the southwestern edge of the city. Many of the earliest homes survive, providing a fascinating look at the residential architecture of the early 1900s. Westmoreland is a City of Houston and National Register historic district.

Please note: this is an exterior architectural tour only; the tour will not go inside any of the houses.

Many of the homes in Westmoreland were built from designs found in pattern books. As a companion book to this tour, we recommend Texas Houses Built by the Book by Margaret Culbertson.
