Future The Woodlands Downtown?

I'd say they are getting pretty close. Give it a few more years and people might actually not laugh at you if you mention "downtown Woodlands area"

No, not close. 'Downtown Woodlands' will get the same polite response as 'Port of Dallas' gets.

The Woodlands hopefully would never allow itself to be annexed by Houston. It's not even in the same county. It needs to be completely separate so it can establish it's own culture. Then they need to develop a zoning ordinance which would make it illegal for Wal-Mart to locate anywhere in the Woodlands city limits.

i'm not sure i like the sound of "downtown woodlands". i think the leaders of TCID and TWDC should continue to say "the woodlands town center".

Everybody's trying to have a downtown these days. Westchase wants to be "the downtown of west Houston".

I guess that once various neighborhoods have staked claims to the prefixes "down", "mid", and "up", other areas basically start going by "downtown #2", "#3", "#4", etc.

One way I define a "downtown" is an urban center of activity that has lots of pedestrian traffic at any given time of day. I don't think Westchase will ever be like that. It's just a business park, where people go to work, then get into their cars (escorted by a security guard) and drive back to their Katy homes.

Jeez, that's some harsh stereotyping.

I define a "downtown" as the Central Business District to a metropolitan area. Period.

Yeah, but you're not an urbanist snob, TheNiche.

They're always trying to put down anything that doesn't fit into their utopian views. The problem is that most families don't want to live in an urban paradise, and many of the other folks who'd like to can't afford it.

It really torques 'em off that people who live in non-utopian areas are actually happy with their environment. LOL. We just aren't enlightened enough.

There is a Wal-mart already there.

And correct me if I am wrong, but they really need to add more street.

When I think of a downtown, it is not just tall buildings, I think of a square/plaza with a grid pattern coming off it.

It does look like a newer Greenspoint to me too!

Can anybody confirm the second Anadarko Tower? Seems Anadarko isn't doing so hot right now. Looking at the rendering from 02', there are buildings in places now that aren't on there. I've lived in The Woodlands since 89', I would never have dreamed all this being here. It practically sprang up overnight.

a friend at the chamber swears there is a second tower in the works; however, another friend who just got canned swears that anadarko has no building campaign in the works. i wouldn't bet on a new tower being announced this year.

freakin conroe powers that be have passed on many, MANY things that would have put them on the map. old school, family ties have kept them in crap mode. and now, they want to annex parts of the woodlands in order to have some cash.

years ago, some people in the area wanted to eliminate billboards and keep conroe pretty. the powers that be didn't like the idea because the families who owned many billboards in the area would have suffered financially and were connected with city government.

Actually, I read that Houston city limits actually come into Montgomery County....barely. However, I totally agree with everything else you said, especially the Wal-Mart bit. My family lives just across the freeway from the Wood in "Spring", and while the development in the Town Center is nice, the development along Rayford-Sawdust and especially around the Wal-Mart is nasty-looking. And, as much as I would like to see the development of SoMoCo Culture, right now it seems like the primary cultural activity is shopping.

Houston city limits do come into Montgomery County over by Kingwood. However if you look carefully on a map, Houston city limits also approach the MoCo line on 45. Houston had annexed a small strip of land on 45 all the way up to 2920 in Spring to include The Woodlands in it's TDJ or TCJ...whatever it is.
