Baylor College of Medicine's Jewish Institute for Medical Research has been renamed to Michael E. DeBakey Center for Biomedical Education and Research. The building is located at 1 Baylor Plaza (Google street view shows an address of 1200 Moursund Street.)

According to records, at an organizational meeting, chaired by Silverman and Farfel, in January 1959, it was learned that a plot of ground adjoining Baylor College of Medicine would be donated for the building’s construction. A planning committee sent a resolution to the Texas Medical Center. In a letter from the TMC, dated March 9, 1959, the committee’s intentions were accepted: That the “Jewish citizens of this community” would raise “$450,000 to construct a research building in the Texas Medical Center for use by the staff of Baylor University College of Medicine.” Texas Medical Center, Inc. also assured “that land will be provided and that the building will be used for medical research.” Its name, “Jewish Medical Research Institute, will be used to designate this structure in perpetuity.”

According to a June 6 TMC press release, the four-story building would be built by the TMC and would adjoin the then-new M.D. Anderson Basic Science Building.

Fundraising began in earnest, pledges were made, and federal funding and loans were secured. Groundbreaking ceremonies took place on June 7, 1960.

Dr. Farfel presided over JIMR’s formal dedication on Oct. 20, 1963. Among the speakers, who referred to the building as a “dream fulfilled,” were Shlenker and Drs. Michael DeBakey and Joseph L. Melnick. Individual donors’ names are inscribed in a scroll and enclosed in a glass case in the institute’s lobby. A large Star of David and a mezuzah, still today, greet visitors at the front door.
