How To Avoid A Traffic Ticket In Houston Metro

A good radar detector, like my Escort Passport, can be programed to eliminate about 95% of false signals. I have virtually no problems with false signals unless I pull into a grocery store parking lot or some other place with automatic doors - the motion detector always causes my unit to scream. See if your unit has a "No X Band" mode - it really helps and X band radar is almost never used by cops anymore.

Yeah, that works in a perfect world where everyone can just glide along without stop lights, construction, wrecks, emergency vehicles, etc. Also, there are lots of people (usually old people) who seem to be afraid to drive up to the limit. The point is that it is impossible for your scenario to work even if everyone stuck to the limit - doing so would just lower everyone's average speed and therefore make jams even worse. Any argument where people slow down, and therefore requires more cars to spend more time on the freeway, is counter-intuitive to reducing congestion.

Interesting information..!! So all "Patrol" Law Enforcement uses only "Ka" band...??? We have different Law Enforcement Agencies in the Metropolitan area:

HPD

Harric Co. Sheriffs Dept.

Harris Co. Constables (All precints)

METRO Police

Texas DPS

What bands are they using..??

this is not true. They use K and Ka Band, as well as Laser. i've seen HPD Patrol use predominately Ka, some still have K, and recently i've been tagged by laser (twice in the last several months).

K is older technology, i'm assuming all Law enforcement agencies are slowly upgrading which is why you see a mix.

Laser is bad news, very line of sight, so if your detector has gone off its probably too late. i was pulled over once in Oregon by a cop who said he clocked me using Laser from a different mountain peak. my detector never went off...

Its true that X is rarely used. i've only seen it used once by a campus cop at UT, and that was about 7 years ago. I have X Band turned off on my Passport, so i'm not bothered by every single grocery store out there. But i do leave it in Highway mode always, to increase sensitivity.

ALSO BEWARE the beltway, i've seen multiple cops over hills (with Ka blasting) every morning i've taken it on the south side.

speaking of avoiding traffic tickets - i got one and its been a while...

any suggestion for online defensive driving? there are a lot more out there since i last took it, and for $25 now. last time i took it at defensivedriving.com for $40, which is the same price it is now.

I see that getdefensive.com and idrivesafely.com are $25. has anyone used these courses? they say TEA Certified, but i'd like to hear it from someone that the course was ok, and the certificate came in a timely manner.

thanks in advance.

(PS don't turn left from Elgin to Brazos!!)

as far as getting a ticket I always ask for defered adjudication or hire a lawyer if I know I can't make it. you pay a stiff fine either way, but your record will be clean.

another favorite spot is the 45 South exit to bagby/pierce. 5 or 6 cops (I've seen as many as 8!)are just waiting like sharks there. When I saw it the first time, I was in a pack of cars. Every one of them got pulled over except for me!

i had two tickets, got one dismissed and i'm taking defensive driving for the other. record is staying clean, and its cheaper then deferred adjudication in most cases. i just have to pay the court fees ($103) and take the course, rather then paying the fine which was $173. plus with deferred adjudication if you get another ticket within 3 months, they both go on your record.

this way i'm clean, though i can't take defensive driving for one year to dismiss a ticket. if i do get a ticket within a year, i'll go the deferred adjudication route for that one and drive like my grandma for three months.

I have found an absolutely fool proof plan for not getting a ticket, you better get a pen and write this down.........are you ready ? ok, write this................don't break the traffic laws ! It is soooooooooooooo easy, and it doesn't cost you a dime.

Oh good god! I am surprised it took until the 2nd response for this post. Ridiculous!

A little off topic but somewhat related. When I got back from Iraq in November we had to demob in FT. Knox, KY. Well seeing that it was our first taste of freedom we were a bit wild going out to parties and what not. Well, in one night I got pulled over three times for speeding and a total of five for the week. The cop would get to asking questions, it would get out that we just got back and he would then let us go, not once did I get a ticket :D . I don't think that really flys in Houston as it did in the Louiseville area. I'm not sure though becuase I haven't gotten pulled over in Houston in years. I have been watching my speed
