Kroger At I-10 & Gessner Rd.

Many years ago, there was a Kroger at the northwest corner of Interstate 10 and Gessner. While the building stood (a distinctive "Greenhouse" Kroger) until the mid-2000s, by the time it was demolished (and it was a Kroger in the 1980s, I confirmed that) it had not been a Kroger in some time. When did this Kroger close? I'm thinking it could've been as early as 1994 when they acquired the two AppleTree stores at Gessner and Hammerly (less than 2 miles north) and at Echo and I-10 (about a mile and a half east). 

Anyone have anymore insight?

Okay I found a reference in the Chronicle Archives to it still being a Kroger in July of 1996.

The Astros Ticket Shuttle will be at the Kroger at 1049 Gessner at I-10 from 4 to 7 p.m. today.

Then by October of 1998 there's a reference to the store as I knew it, Memorial Market.

At Memorial Market on the Katy Freeway, manager Terry Sparks replenished his repellent inventory from another location on Gessner.

Initially Memorial Market was a general grocer, but as the other locations closed the one in question became more and more Korean. Eventually changing names to Komart Marketplace, and finally just Komart.

 

So that puts Kroger's exit sometime around 1997.

Wasn't it another name after Memorial Market. Seems like it was a Korean food market before it shuttered. Maybe I'm thinking of another building. As I recall, that was an awfully small Kroger. Was it ever a Henke & Pillot, prior to Kroger?

That Kroger north of I-10 at Gessner in it's later years became some type of international supermarket.

As an aside, the "second" Memorial Market was at 7925 Katy Freeway (not off Gessner, which the paper implies), which @SpaceGhost had actually mentioned before. It was the previous home to a Continental Finer Foods, and the building was razed around 2005 for the freeway widening. A look at late 1997 phone book listings confirms this, unless a THIRD store opened (unlikely).
