Proposal Designating Transit Corridor On Richmond Ave.

Recommended Posts

There was a fair amount of discussion about the designation of Richmond as a transit corridor at Neartown meeting.

Metro, COH and COH public works spoke about the JUly 18 public hearing---apparently the room was very hot and only 25 citizens remained to be heard on the issue--13 for designation  11 against and 1 not sure. There was an opportunity to respond online also--80 for23 against and 3 undecided. It was mentioned that all the other designations took place in 2009 but the route of the University line hadn't been voted on so Richmond Ave didn't get designated at that time.

Aug 15 the board meets to decide if they are for or against and Sept 1 COH council will review for adoption.

If the designation goes through, high points for me were 15' set back instead of 25'-- mandatory 6' sidewalks  with trees-- no solid wall longer than 20' ( on new buildings) -- 15' between driveways and emphases on transparency construction  in first floor developments.

Everyone emphasized the designation was mainly an incentive for developers to make the corridor more pedestrian friendly--that only new development would be affected by the designation and imminent domain was very rarely done by Metro and probably wouldn't be done in this case.

I found an article on internet that gives some background-http://www.houstontomorrow.org/livability/story/city-of-houston-may-add-transit-corridor-streets-to-classification-system/-

Something interesting I just found out--

a rep for Congressman Culberson (remember the district was redrawn and he no longer represents) reported on the Culberson's (negative) views. Apparently all the Civic organizations along Richmond are supporting the designation.

Congressman Ted Poe has agreed to appear at a Transportation forum hosted by Neartown that is to be held later part of September.

Those would be great improvements to the corridor.  What people need to understand is that this doesn't mean that rail is going to be constructed.  The future possibility is there but this is just to improve the street in general as it is a major street.  Light rail construction is so far off it will probably not happen as proposed.
