Wineries - Lubbock produces some of the State's best Wine from a number of vinyards, including the award winning Llano Estacado. Texas Tech is also the home of the Texas Wine Marketing Research Institute. Since it's founding in 1988, both the varieties and popularity of Texas wines have risen dramatically. The warm sunny days and cool nights along with the dry climate provide optimum growing conditions.

Would love to see more pictures of what McDougal is doing across University from Texas Tech. I'm out there maybe once a year. Two years ago it looked like a war zone with all the rubble, then last year there were apts popping up like seeds, wondering what it looks like now, and if someone could keep us updated. Also how is the Marsha Sharp Freeway coming?

Here are some recent photos of the Overton Park (aka 'McDougalville') Development directly across the street from the Texas Tech campus, reportedly the largest privately-funded urban redevelopment project in the country:

$15 Million Football Training Facility (Front Entrance). Each flagpole flys a different Big XII member institution flag.

footballtraining-wide.jpg

Practice field side of the new Football Training Facility. The sheer length of this building is astounding. The building houses a state-of-the-art new weight training facility, theatre-style meeting rooms, individual position meeting rooms, Coaches offices, and a first class Sports Medicine facility donated by a group of Lubbock doctors.

$4.5 Million Marsha Sharp Academic Center and Courtyard (across from TTU Alumni Pavillion). Tech officials correctly surmised that separating the Academic buildings from the Football building would yield better results than the combined facilities built at other schools. The idea being that when athletes leave the athletic training facilities, they enter this one with an academic mindset. Texas Tech was recently recognized by the American Football Coaches Association for posting some of the highest graduation rates in College Football, averaging over 70% Graduation rate for the past 5 years. (if you look closely at the Masked Rider Statue, you'll see that it was vandalized by opposing school's fans prior to a Texas A&M game).

The new on-campus golf course, the Rawls Course, has been recognized by Golf Digest and several other major publications as one of the top 3 collegiate courses in the nation. Somewhat of an engineering feat, the course was excavated from a cotton field. It was designed by Tom Doak as a Links-style course.

The Southwest Collection Building houses artifacts and archives relevant to culture of the American Southwest, here you can find all of the official archives of the now defunct SWC, Cowboy Literature, Art, etc. This was the first significant building in Texas Tech's construction boom that has been going on for the past decade.

Who said there are no trees in Lubbock, there certainly are...just few that are naturally occuring. ;) Tech is very aggressive in tree planting efforts, having won awards year after year from the National Arbor Day Foundation.

Geographically, Lubbock proper, is flat but it sits right atop the edge of the Caprock, a geographic uplift that is ringed with stunning canyons.

Holden Hall - a place with neat murals painted throughout the soaring entry hall. Notice the flags. There are a liberal amount of flags and flagpoles all over Lubbock. The wind blows steadily in Lubbock, and flags look good when fully taken by the wind.
