Things to do/see in Little Rock AR, Birmingham or Montgomery AL

We will be taking a new route on our annual road trip to see the in-laws in Nashville. I'm looking for interesting stops between a couple of hours/half day in the Little Rock area, and basically anything along the i-65 in Alabama, as I have never been north of Mobile. This is shaping up to be a 12 day Redneck Extravaganza through east Texas, Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi. At least I will be getting some quality beach time on the Redneck Riviera after interstates and in-laws.

All suggestions are welcome from HAIF road warriors/southerners.

Pig Pit Barbecue in Arkadelphia - this is the only cool thing I remember about Arkansas. It is a complete hole (or was 18 years ago). No smoking inside...whatever, the place was filled with smoke from cooking anyway. Just the fact that I remember the name of the place after going there on vacation in middle school tells me it must have been good.

Dad and P-man, this is exaclly the kind of stuff I like to see. Food, specifically pig, and roadside attractions. Thx!

Not sure if it qualifies as a roadside attraction, but the Clinton Library is in Little Rock. And, if you spend the night there, Little Rock is like Austin used to be, before it grew up and became Dallas/Houston. Lots of live music bars and eclectic nightlife. Sorry, it's been 13 years since I lived there, so I cannot give specific names, but downtown and the Arkansas River district are where it used to be happening.

I crossed the river at Natchez one time (coming back to Houston) and then took a levee road south to just north of Baton Rouge. Then, I hooked a right on 190 and went through Opelousas. It was a long time ago, but I remember some really cool, old homes north of Baton Rouge. Of course, then there's Natchez...

If you do that, the casino in Marksville has the best casino buffet I've ever had. Also, there's a butcher shop with awesome cracklins, can't remember the name. It might also be a gas station. Yes, everything I have to say today involves pork in some way.

Actually we're going to overnight in Little Rock on the Houston-Nashvegas leg, so yea. I figured the downtown/river area would be hopping.

Luv the cracklins!

I got boiled peanuts in Opelousas.

Not that I don't heart the pork, but it's summer now so I'm all about the shrimps. Those Alabama shrimp--I forget what they're called, something Reds. Yum!!

I can't wait to take the Capn to the FloraBama. I love that place.

I did that trip a few years ago. Lots of interesting stuff to see up there, and Natchez is a quaint Southern town.
