Kenny Weldon wants to return Conroe to its boxing heyday and make it the amateur boxing capital of the world.

Weldon, a boxing trainer who has worked with such greats as Evander Holyfield, Mike McCallum, Vinnie Pazienza, and Sergei Liacholvich, is proposing a U.S. Boxing Southern Training Center for Conroe. In addition to attracting amateur boxers to Junior Olympic and Golden Gloves tournaments, it would provide local training opportunities for youth and fitness programs for residents.

While the Galena Park Boxing Academy would build the training center, it is looking to the city of Conroe to donate land and to construct a 100-bed dormitory to house fighters during the tournament. Weldon said those tournaments could mean millions in tourism dollars for Conroe.

Under the proposal, the center would become on of three such facilities in the country, with the other two currently located in Phoenix and Tennessee. Boxers from the Gulf Coast Association would use it to train for local, state, national and international events. In addition to serving as a site for Junior Olympic, Golden Gloves and professional boxing, it could also be a venue for mixed martial arts fights, professional wrestling and concerts.

...

Weldon said he selected Conroe because of its rich boxing history as well as the growth of the Houston population northward.

...

Under the proposal presented to Conroe, the city would donate a four-acre site for the training center and get aa long-term lease to the city for $1 a year. While the Galena Park Boxing Academy would build the training facility, it is asking the city to fund a 100-bed dormitory adjacent to the center. The academy would host an annual Conroe tournament, which would be sponsored by local vendors.
