Observer
I have just returned from a trip to Houston where my wife and I looked at homes in First Colony and Greatwood. We really liked the feel of First Colony as a town, but we preferred the actual homes in Greatwood (newer & nicer for the same price - about $350K).The one issue that stops us from buying in Greatwood is that we hear the schools are not as good as in First Colony. Is this the case? If so, how 'bad' are the schools in Greatwood?Greatwood seems more on the 'frontier' of suburbia than First Colony, but that will be a non-issue in 5 years or less judging from the incredible building rate near Hwy 59.Any thoughts on these two towns? UrbaNerd
Greatwood is more natural (all of the trees), but, if you like order, and formal landscaping, i'd go for First Colony. Right now, traffic on 59 by Greatwood is HOORENDOUS, but, once the freeway is expanded here (in about 2-3 years) it will be great. Until then, you'll have to wait 15-25 minutes till you get past Highway 6, all the way from the Crabb River Road exit.As for the schools..I don't really know much about that. I am a student in FBISD, and FBISD is overrated. Greatwood's Lamar consolidated actually has smaller classes, and it is a smaller district, unlike the massive beauracracy that FBISD is.Either one is a great choice, though, especially with all of the great planning, as well as the new developments nearby. (town square, etc)I hope this has made your choice easier!www.greatwoodonline.comthe first colony website no longer exists.OH..and if you are looking into NEW homes, I'd have to point towards David powers homes in Greatowood. Their designs are great, and they are built well (last year, they received one of the top honors from JD powers, in the home builder industry in Houston). Or..if you want to spend a bit less for a bigger house, check out either newmark, Perry(a bit bland, though) or Village builders, in highland park/Woodhaven. Observer
Thanks for the info! We actually did look at some David Powers homes, and they were very nice. The only concern we had with Greatwood was the schools, and it sounded to us like Greatwood schools are in the process of undergoing 'improvements' which will bear fruit in a few years time. Thanks for the link to greatwoodonline.com, I'll look around there.
