TexasStar
BATON ROUGE The Capitol Building built during the Great Depression in 1930-32 stands 34 stories and 450 feet tall. Still the tallest state capitol in the U.S. Huey P. Long - The Kingfish The powerful Governor and U.S. Senator who ruled Louisiana with an iron fist is buried beneath his statue. 49 steps form the Grand Staircase toward the entrance to the Capitol of Louisiana. Each step has the name of a state and the year of its admission into the Union - with Alaska and Hawaii sharing stair number 49. Capitol Grounds View from the top of the Capitol steps Looking South from the Observation Deck The Port of Baton Rouge and the Mighty Mississippi River Looking North The giant Exxon refinery at Baton Rouge - one of the world's largest. 20thStDad
Ah, memories of elementary school field trips...thanks for the great (nostalgic for me) pics!Notice how sad the "downtown" area is. It's the pic with a few buildings and the river showing on the right. So weak. Every time people come here to visit for the first time they are blown away. They see the med center and ask if it's downtown, then they see greenway plaza and ask if it's downtown, then they see the intersection of BW8 and Westheimer and comment that it has bigger buildings than downtown BR. Anyway, that's not the only way to judge a city. BR has a great college town feel to go with the government presence.
MidtownCoog
Neat pics. I've only ever seen it from I-10.You should feel at home now. Houston is starting to smell like Corndogs.I think there are as many LSU alumni stickers as Aggy.
TheNiche
I was lucky enough to see it from the sky earlier this year (Plane ran out of fuel. Had to land.)...but of course, I have an immense appreciation of refinery aesthetics.

editor
The Louisiana capitol is one of my favorite buildings in the world, and my second favorite in Louisiana (after the old capitol). It really is a fantastic design. Funny how sometimes the most corrupt people end up making the best architecture. Not specific to Baton Rouge, there are examples in Chicago, New York, Beijing, Moscow, and elsewhere. It must be something about the powerful that they need to show their power through architecture.
