chzhao Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 I have a narrow lot. I have heard that if I want to add a house behind my current house, the city of Houston requires a driveway of minimum width of 15ft leading to the back house. Please let me know if this is incorrect. What if I only want to add a detached garage behind my current house? Is there a minimum width requirement for a driveway leading to the back garage? Thanks. sidegate Posted January 19, 2008 Posted January 19, 2008 interesting question - I'll be following this one since I intend adding a garage apartment behind my Montrose bungalow. If it does exist can't imagine it would extend to detached garages since most of the driveways in my hood are nowhere near 15ft, yet there are a few detached garage apts recently built or under construction, all presumably permitted. Ross Posted January 20, 2008 Posted January 20, 2008 The City of Houston web site has a link to searchable ordinances. You might find an answer there. Quote
flipper Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 I poured over the 2003 International Residential Code and I can't find anything about driveway width. I think it just depends on the side setbacks on your particular lot.flipper Quote
RedScare Posted January 28, 2008 Posted January 28, 2008 The City requires 12 feet on their ROW. They have no requirement on your property, though I don't know if they have requirements for rental units in back. You can call an inspector and they'll tell you. Quote
