African Americans rank Houston as a top city

Houston Business Journal - 1:59 PM CDT Tuesday, April 17, 2007

Houston ranks in as one of the top cities for African Americans.

The Bayou City was fourth on Black Enterprise's annual list of top cities, ranking behind Washington, D.C.; Atlanta and Raleigh-Durham, N.C.

Rounding out the top 10 were Nashville, Tenn.; Dallas; Charlotte, N.C.; Indianapolis; Columbus, Ohio; and Jacksonville, Fla.

The top cities were chosen from more than 2,000 interactive surveys completed on the business publication's Web site.

The ranking was based on median household income, percentage of households earning more than $100,000, percentage of businesses owned, percentage of college graduates, unemployment rates, home loan rejections and homeownership rates.

Houston is No. 4 and Dallas No. 6 on Black Enterprise magazine's list. Though they seem to be adding cities to the list piecemeal on line, the full list is in the print edition.

In order, they are: D.C, Atlanta, Raleigh-Durham, Houston, Nashville, Dallas, Charlotte, Indianapolis, Columbus, and Jacksonville.

Black Enterprise put Houston at #4 for 2007 as among top ten cities for Black folks to live, work and play. The others are: (10) Jacksonville, (9) Columbus, (8) Indianapolis, (7) Charlotte, (6) Dallas, (5) Nashville, (4) Houston, (3) Raleigh/Durham, (2) Atlanta, and (1) Washington, DC. H-Town was #1 back in 2001, it dropped to #5 in 2004 due to violent crime rate rising slightly back then.

(They messed up when they accidentally put the Dallas skyline pic instead of Houston's pic linking to the article above.)

Hooray for the Chocolate City of Texas! :) And BET did a similar list and is still evaluating 20 cities including Houston; I'll post it on HAIF soon whenever that is finished. If I remember correctly, Houston made #2 on BET's last list back in 2002 right behind Columbus.
