Vertigo58 Posted March 22, 2007 Posted March 22, 2007 (edited) Eastwood is one of Houston’s first master-planned subdivisions. It was designed and developed in 1913 by William A. Wilson, who also developed our sister neighborhood, Woodland Heights. Eastwood was home to well-known Houstonians such as Howard Hughes who lived there as a child. Many German, Italian and Latino families settled near the busy port, making the area a rich cultural melting pot. By the roaring 20s, 138,000 Houstonians were paving the way toward prosperity."The first residents were young entrepreneurs in the city: business owners and management. The first lots went on sale in June 1912 and Eastwood was officially opened in September 1913. The development was planned with paved streets, cement curbs and sidewalks, city water, gas, electricity, telephones and sanitary sewerage as well as terraced lots designed for natural drainage and planned placement of trees. By October 1913, Eastwood was hailed by The Houston Daily Post as a “model suburb, one of the most convenient, attractive and beautiful home site additions in the city of Houston”.The homes built in Eastwood were custom homes reflecting the early 20th century fondness for Craftsman, Arts & Crafts, Foursquare and Mission architecture. Today, Eastwood has one of Houston’s largest intact collections of these architectural styles."Today the 16-square-mile East End area, bordering downtown and Minute Maid Park, consists of 2500 businesses and more than 85,000 residents. Where there was once crumbling, graffiti-scrawled infrastructure, there is now new development, affordable housing, lush green hike and bike trails along Buffalo Bayou and a five-year strategic vision for the future."Edit: Above quotes are from Wikipedia andEastwood Civic Association websites.
