BY Elliott Blackburn

AVALANCHE-JOURNAL

Texas Tech Athletics Director Gerald Meyers proposed an 85,000-seat football stadium and renovated baseball and softball facilities to grace the Lubbock campus over the next 15 years.

Meyers outlined immediate projects that could begin in 2008 adding 10,000 seats on the north and a 5-story building on the east of Jones AT&T Stadium, as well as ball field improvements.

Those projects are roughly estimated to cost $54 million to $63 million.

PHASE 1 & 2. Completed

PHASE 3. This phase has two primary components, subheaded 3-N and 3-E. Phase 3-N is the addition of 9,400 north end seats, new club and terrace area, a new exterior surrounding fence and an arcade on the seating terrace for video board support. Phase 3-E will begin at the same time as phase 3-N, but will complete in 2008. This phase adds 3 levels of Administrative and public space on the east side with 2 layers of VIP club and suite space above, adding approximately 1,000 seats overall to the stadium capacity and 90,000 SF of usable space. After the east side is complete, the south end building is demolished with an enclosing arcade and new video board installed. The Video Board would be separately fi nanced. Consideration for relocating the Double T Shop, Ticket Office and Business Office is included.

PHASE 5. A future phase adds approximately 15,500 seats in the south endzone, a new club space and maintains the open circulation pattern at grade with an upper level concourse. With this and all previous additions, stadium capacity becomes 85,000.

Really awful timing for all this to be happening at Texas Tech. High school seniors across the country are making their final plans on where they'll be attending college in the fall, and this will severely hurt Tech's recruiting of these students.

The construction crews have been hard at work all summer. In the last 3 weeks, the entire NE corner bleachers have been put up and they have recently begun to do the same with the NW corner. They've been able to move so fast because they are using pre-fab risers and bleachers. This link is to the same site as the last link I posted but these pictures are from earlier today.
