  1. I went and it was great!! I am 20 years old so I don't remember the dome that much except for a couple of astros games and a concert my dad took me. I waited around an hour to go into the dome and it was totally worth the wait. The building have real potential and Judge Emmett had a great marketing idea to have this party.  The dome is a spectacular piece of architecture and that roof is incredible I really hope judge Emmett idea of a indoor park becomes a reality.

New Starbucks concept at the Hilton Americas

Officials with Houston First Corporation and Hilton Americas-Houston hotel have announced they will convert a portion of the hotel’s ground-floor lobby into what is expected to become one of the largest coffee outlets in Texas.

Houston First has entered into a license agreement with Starbucks Coffee to sell the Seattle-based company’s product in 4,000 square feet in the northeast corner of the hotel lobby.

"We believe this new, vast Starbucks will draw not only Hilton guests, but locals who work and play in the area," said Ric Campo, chairman of Houston First. "It will appeal to a wide range of tastes and become a fantastic addition to the ever-developing food and beverage options in the Convention District."

Hilton Americas-Houston will be one of the first locations in Texas to have Starbucks Evenings service. After 4 p.m., a selection of wine, beer, appetizer-type food and desserts will be offered for sale.

The deal also allows for the sale of the coffee giant’s new premium product called Starbucks Reserve®, which is available in limited locations in Houston. It is small-lot coffee selected by Starbucks, roasted in Seattle then delivered to select retail outlets and brewed for individual orders.

Hilton Americas-Houston general manager Joe Palmieri said hotel guests will enjoy all the benefits of the new coffee location and only minimally inconvenienced by its construction.

"While construction will be significant, this will not be a messy teardown nor a dusty build-out," said Palmieri. "It will be business as usual at the Hilton Americas for the next six to seven months. The final product will feature both indoor and outdoor seating to complement a pedestrian-friendly environment."

Dawn Ullrich, president and CEO of Houston First, said the new Starbucks will be another amenity to the neighborhood surrounding the George R. Brown Convention Center.

"It is significant that it will have signage on the Hilton façade and exterior-facing doors so that visitors will know it’s there," Ullrich said. "We are also replacing the glazing on the windows facing Discovery Green. This will allow passers-by on the sidewalk to see the interior footprint and create more interactive pedestrian experience.

"This is the same approach we used when the Pappasito’s Cantina was added at the other end of the hotel with exterior signs and a patio. We are integrating what is taking place inside the Hilton and the GRB with what is taking place outside."

Presently, the Houston First team is working to attract as many as seven restaurants, cafes and other retail options to the GRB, where they too will be accessible to the public at the street level.

add Cane Rosso to the long list of Dallas imports invading Houston. The pizzeria raised some suspicions of its possible arrival recently after notice of the restaurant following local publications and writers on Twitter and Instagram, including this site's Twitter account. Although that's not entirely out of the ordinary, Houston Chronicle has confirmed the Dallas eatery will come to Houston, opening in the Heights by year's end.

Residing between the center that houses Fat Cat CreameryHugs and Donuts and forthcoming Ka Restaurant, plus Treadsack's Bernadine's and Hunky Dory on the opposite side, Cane Rosso will occupy a 4,000 square-feet space within the shopping center planned for 1835 North Shepherd. The new development replaces an auto shop which sat on the corner of North Shepherd and West 19th for years.

Expanding into downtown soon is Christian's Tailgate, the burger-centric sports bar with locations in Midtown, the Heights, Washington Avenue and the Energy Corridor, which opened last December. The sports bar unveiled a picture of an alcohol license application posted on a window at 1012 Congress, alerting Facebook fans of its impending arrival:

IS THE PARK-in-back strip center now a certifiable thing in Houston? Here’s the latest rendering of the small shopping center designed by Ziegler Cooper Architects for the corner of W. Alabama St. and Mandell St. in Montrose, across the street from the Menil Collection parking lot. Like the smaller center at the corner of Westheimer and Dunlavy now home to the Common Bond bakery and the slightly larger one developed by Braun Enterprises at 20th St. and Rutland in the HeightsAlabama Row scoots up just about as close to the main drag as the city’s development rules will let it. And it looks like the building’s south face, fronting West Alabama, is meant to be seen as its front

Sullivan Brothers Builders plans to develop 25 three-story homes on the site is acquired near downtown from the Detering Co., the building supply that just sold the last of its landmark Washington Avenue property.

The brick and cement board-sided homes have been designed to resemble ”the classic brownstones of other metropolitan cities like London, New York and Chicago,” sales director Karen Travelstead said in a statement.

The gated project — Studemont Heights — is at 2900 Hicks at Studemont. Prices will start in the mid-$500,000s. Each house will have a least 2,200 square feet with three bedrooms and three-and-a-half bathrooms. Construction is set to start this month, with the first homes to be done this summer.

The builder is also making progress on another nearby residential development that will have 51 homes when it’s completed. The company has sold five homes so far in the first phase of construction, which is under way and will include eight homes. The property is between Tulane and Ashland in The Heights on the former site of Semasys Printing Co. The homes are priced from the mid-$600,000s.

Demolition is scheduled to begin in early March, which follows the completion of asbestos abatement at 51 properties in Houston’s Independence Heights neighborhood – properties that were acquired by the district to become a part of the new 21st century campus for Booker T. Washington High School.

As part of HISD’s current bond program, voters approved $51.7 million to build the new school, and the purchase of nearly 16 acres of land was part of the plan to nearly double the size of the campus.

The demolition phase is expected to take four to six weeks, and work will begin next week by disconnecting utilities and moving in heavy equipment.

“After the utilities are disconnected in the coming weeks, you will start to see more activity on the site,” said HISD Project Manager Amanda Goodie. “I know the neighbors are looking forward to the demo being completed – we are too, and we’re working hard to make that happen.”

Most buildings constructed prior to 1974 contain asbestos in the flooring, spray-on fireproofing, and HVAC pipe insulation. The abatement process includes conducting an asbestos-containing material and lead-based paint survey; securing an abatement contractor and air monitoring consultant; monitoring air conditions throughout; conducting air quality sampling before and after; and passing final inspection.

“It takes some time to remove older buildings due to asbestos and lead based paint that may be present, which can be extremely hazardous,” said Andreas Peeples, HISD construction general manager. “This was a large project and a complex one, but we’ve done it safely. Now it’s time to bring the buildings down.”

Several other HISD schools will be undergoing similar abatement and demolition activities as homes, apartment buildings, and old school buildings are removed to make way for new schools to be built.

“We follow strict protocols when it comes to demolition and dealing with any hazardous materials,” Peeples said. “Safety is our top priority – for students, workers, and the community.”

After the homes are cleared from the Independence Heights site, the construction company will begin the removal of the streets and underground utilities.

    Demolition starts this month

The 1970s-era Houston Airport Marriott at George Bush Intercontinental is getting a makeover with a Texas twist.

The initial phase of the hotel’s multimillion-dollar renovation, which incorporates a Houston theme in the artwork, is nearing completion.

The work includes upgrades to the lobby and public areas, meeting rooms and all 573 guest rooms, which are being refreshed with a contemporary style, luxury linens and the latest technology.

South tower guestrooms and meeting rooms are set to be completed in May, while the north tower upgrades are scheduled to be finished by fall.

The hotel, at 18700 John F. Kennedy Blvd. between terminals B and C, offers a connection to all of the airport’s terminals by way of a free underground tram.

“We will continue striving to meet the needs of our guests while creating a sense of home that draws them back time and again,” Scot Cotton, general manager of Houston Airport Marriott, said in an announcement.

Among the improvements to the rooms are: enhanced lighting, luxury linens and new carpet and window coverings; custom headboards incorporating task lighting, electrical outlets and USB capabilities; high-speed wireless Internet access; 47-inch LCD televisions; and bathrooms with new plumbing fixtures, stone counters, larger mirrors and sliding doors.

The hotel’s 34 meeting rooms with 30,000 square feet of space will get new furnishings, carpet and wall coverings.

The new lobby will feature a great room with multiple seating areas and artwork incorporating Houston scenes such as the downtown skyline, Ship Channel and the oil and gas industry. The decor with clean lines and neutral colors will tie in with the new all-day restaurant and full-service bar.

San Antonio-based H-E-B Grocery Co.plans to replace its 20,000-square-foot Bellaire store with a new 70,000-square-foot store, according to reports.

H-E-B officials announced the plan at a meeting with Bellaire residents earlier this week, InstantNewsBellaire.com andSwamplot report.

One of the possible scenarios would be building on the site of the existing store, at 5100 Cedar St., which would require the other businesses in the shopping center to relocate, according to the reports. However, the company is considering other sites, as wellt the meeting, officials showed images of the company's new San Antonio store on Nogalitos Street.

The former 26,000-square-foot grocery store at 1601 Nogalitos St. was built in 1945. It closed last summer so H-E-B could expand the store. Yet H-E-B couldn't add another wing to the property because the space was landlocked. Instead of moving the location, H-E-B decided to demolish the original store and construct a new two-story building in its place.

The Houston Galleria will welcome three new high-end retailers.

La Perla will open a store in the spring. The Italian women’s clothing designer specializes in lingerie. It has more than 150 boutiques worldwide, including in London Sloane Street, New York’s Madison Avenue and Milan Via Montenapoleone.

Céline, the French ready-to-wear and leather goods brand, will also open a store in 2016. The brand owns hundreds of stores worldwide and is sold at Barneys, Bergdof Goodman, Harrods in London and Galeries Lafayette in Paris.

The Webster, a multibrand luxury boutique, will open a location in Houston in the new luxury building, nicknamed the “jewel box” at the Galleria in November. The store runs from its flagship in an art deco building in Miami Beach. The store, which opened in 2009, has established itself in the fashion world. French buyer Laure Heriard Dubreuil edits and buys for the collection.

Tod’s, the shoe and luxury goods brand,  also plans to open its new 2,000 square foot store in summer 2015.

Additionally, Chanel renewed its lease and updated its 5,000-square-foot boutique.

The Downtown Redevelopment Authority and Downtown Distrcit are set to begin work on both Main Street and Dallas Street projects in January 2015. The Dallas Street project will create a pedestrian-friendly experience from Milam to Crawford, with widened sidewalks on both sides of the street. The walkways will feature dense street trees, landscaping and signature lighting. While the street is under construction, sewer and water line improvements will also be made to better support the increased development in the area.
